This brings back memories- I briefly lived in Amsterdam (and the countryside in Zwolle) way back in the early 90's. It is a beautiful city, and there is much more to do there than get drunk and go to coffee shops- the Rijks museum is amazing and there's a lot of bands and DJs to check out, too. Those low barriers on the canal won't stop drunk people taking a swim in some dubious water, or worse, don't risk going within 3 meters of a canal if drunk! The red light district wont take kindly to anyone taking photos or videos- it has been known that a minder will rush out and throw a camera into the canal- be warned! I took a few photos in that area- never into the windows, but of people looking into them as part of a street scene and I always did it when I was just behind the poiice walking the red light district (there's a police station there). It's also easy to get lost in Amsterdam, so keep an eye on landmarks- if I got lost, I'd get a number 10 tram back to centraal station where I knew my way! I've read that the mayor of Amsterdam is clamping down on large groups of tourists- the ones that get really drunk and make a lot of noise, particularly stag and hen parties.
A fantastic place in the 90s and early 2000s, but there's been an influx from other countries of those who unscrupulous intentions. Anyone visiting should be wary at night time.
Hi Kevin .Great video Just a pointer . There’s a great rock music bar, quite close to where you were ,called Excalibur Lemmy used to go there when Motörhead were on tour .
Thanks for the heads-up Kev. It's nuts how there are barriers for the bikes but not the people wth ! I'm really enjoying these videos as I have never been there before! Thanks Kev xx
@jamnoise72 seemed friendly I have a video where 2 young guys have a chat with me but youtube have restricted it if you are on newsletter I will send private link to everyone as yt won't promote it. Shame it got restricted for nothing.
Other things to be aware of - cyclists they will be extremely pissed off if you walk out in front of them , or walk in the cycle lanes. Talking of bikes you would not believe how many go in the canals. Once saw a barge with a crane hooking them out of the water . It was loaded with rusty bikes. Another danger is the trams , always be very vigilant around the tram tracks as they certainly wont stop for you. The last but maybe not so much any more are the street dealers , they can be quite threatening if they catch you off guard at night. Used to go to Susies bar back in 2000 when i was working over there.
I remember the street dealers around the Damrak area- when they asked if I wanted anything I always told them I had no money (the subtext is that it's also not worth mugging me)- I saw a guy get "clever" with a street dealer- I tried to stop him but I left the scene for my own safety. It's largely a safe city, but definately have street smarts about you, stay in areas with lots of people about and keep your wits about you.
Its a really lovely city, fairly safe but if your main goal is to drink as much as possible and take drugs then you may run into trouble. Plenty of life in the city outside of those activities though.
Looks very quiet! I go 3 or 4 times a year to visit family. Normally, the streets are jam-packed with tourists! Hope you are enjoying Kevin, my friend! Next time you go, you should think of visiting some of the smaller cities around Amsterdam like Utrecht, all easily accessible by train and reasonably priced! My family are from Utrecht, its a charming place and cheaper than Amsterdam!
Yea I went in November and it was freezing cold and absolutely packed everywhere. I got up at 6-7 am for 2 mornings and had a peaceful walk around the city. So much nicer when it’s quiet
Thanks , it was really busy in other streets especially at night I done a few videos but they have been restricted by yt so not sure if anyone sees them. Thanks fir the tips
@Scotsman in Tenerife Its normally busy on every street in Central, shoulder to shoulder and toe to heel. It's actually usually overcrowded to the point where it is difficult to walk at your own space! Rembrant is a bit more forgiving but like I said it looks unusualy quiet! I was wondering if it's the cannabis smoking fraternity that now seem to be going to Barcelona instead! A friend of ours owns a Coffee shop just off Dam Strat and since last summer business has slowed right down!
@@waynekieft4952 a lot are going to Barcelona. Mainly for the prices, taxes in Amsterdam. Because coffeeshops can’t legitimately prove what the pay for their weed the Dutch government put them on the highest tax bracket. Not sure why Barcelona is much cheaper because it’s still not legal there. Just another loophole
Very interesting video Kevin. You should try and do all the capitals of Europe. Would be a good achievement and think everyone would find them interesting.
So that tour starts at Oudekerksplein right in the heart of the red light district - It's fairly safe around here as the Dutch police have lots of CCTV in this area -This looks like a weekday so it's quiet but later say after 8pm especially on Summer weekends this area is full of tourists and care should be taken to avoid pickpockets - prices in this part of town are much higher than other areas of the city apart from maybe around Rembrandtplein, that applies to beer, a shmoke, food, even tourist tat - beware of shops that don't have prices on display! Tip: If your not sure where you are or where you want to go, don't get a map out and stand on the street corner trying to find your location - go sit in a café and figure it out as nothing says tourist quite like that - Pocket size city maps can be found for free in the back of the ''What's on'' guides available in most hostels and hotel lobbies.
Love this place. Just an observation, you talked about people peeing and falling in the canal. In fact while you are talking about this, 25 seconds or so in, the green thing on the right is a public urinal...
Visited there on the busiest wknd of the year, st valentines. Highly recommend it, it’s outstandingly beautiful. Go on a quieter wknd n please if you are a woman go nowhere😊 alone, even 2 doors down don’t do it! You will be approached there n back. Lots of amazing galleries and museums to see. You will never be stuck for places to visit. Also dress down, don’t wear expensive jewellery Other than that you will have a blast. Oh yeah don’t buy anything from street sellers you will be ripped off fora certainty.
When i went over..early 90s....pit Redundancy in my back pocket..get ready lol...!!!! I had to strap a plank to my a%se so i didnt fall in too...not the river tho 😂
Fun fact: When the police fish a corpse out of the water they check if the pants are unzipped. If that's the case they can be 99% sure it was a drunk taking a piss.
i smoked so much lemon haze in that bulldog cafe i walked out the front of it after about 5 hours inside and i was totally lost, i knew i was in the Dam but not a clue which bit lol its a hell of a town
Were in Amsterdam a few years ago to see the black crows had a few beers soon Found out if you don't get knocked over by a cyclist you will be hit by a tram.
Many times tourists drown here mostly men. They are found in the canals with there fly open. They are drunk and pis in the canals they fall in and can not get out because it is to high to climb out.

" 😂 The only time in Amsterdam when I felt like I might get "Amster-Stamped" into the floor . Ja avoid that guy if you can
The warning should be "don't pee in the canal" in the first place! Disgusting! It's not okay to let your inhibitions down when visiting other peoples' home more than you would on your doorstep! Otherwise a good vlog matey...
In 2001 an Irish lad who was living in Amsterdam went on the missing list on New Year's Eve and wasn't seen for 3 days until his body was eventually found in a canal in the center of the city. He'd had an argument with his girlfriend that evening - they were both hammered and she remembered him storming out of their house to continue drinking at a bar. There was talk of course afterwards that he may have taken his own life that night due to being drunk and angry or whatever, but the truth is everybody genuinely felt that he'd simply fallen in at a section of the canal belt that looks just like this - I know the area personally and much of it is without any railings and is basically just a sheer drop over the edge into what would have been very cold water in the middle of winter. He was my friend, and we all still miss him more than 20 years later. So yeah maybe pay attention to the message in this vid - it's 100% valid. Be careful of this in Amsterdam - I was drunk and high on shrooms/weed and came close to falling in once also. it happens more than you think. RIP M.💚

It’s dodgy at night down that end. I went for a walk on 15 grams of mushrooms last time. Not sure why I thought that was a good idea 😂
Lol
Me too about 15years ago
15 grams you amateur
@@hbpw857 sorry top G 🤣🤣🤣 what is classed as a heroic dose?
Around 2003 time went with some pals. Smoked some super strong skunk as you do. Never ever been so paranoid in all my life.
Never heard of temporary pop up toilets .........you learn something new every day
A man was killed by one in central London at the end of January. The telescopic toilets (as they are known) have now claimed 2 lives in London!

No
Once a week the hells angels count cash in Suzy saloon, or at least they used too
Love Amsterdam ❤
Looks lovely must try this year
Apparently Amsterdam is trying to ban/discourage British stag and hen does because of the trouble with them.
yip read it but they have smoking bars, girls in windows and loads of bars so a bit half hearted that campaign lol
They'll lose so much money as tha British are a chunk of their tourism.
They have just increased the cost of the accommodation to price the crappy tourists out
