While driving I yield to the vehicle with the most lug nuts, when on the water I yield to whoever displaces more water, which is pretty much everybody. Situational awareness is key.
You could get some different colored boats and look at them from 5-10 feet under water with a camera. I doubt there would be much difference but I don’t know. Easy enough to test during regular filming. If the fish are spooky I place my kayak somewhere it will look like a log from underneath with my shadow on the bank. Moving shadows spook fish.
I know my Papaya colored Hobie Compass stands out on the water much more than my old blue Compass did. My wife says it's much easier for her to see me on the lake. As far as spooking fish, I seem to be catching more fish after getting this yak. I still use a flag anytime on the water.
Chad you are correct with all the things you mentioned in the video! The one other thing I do is travel against the traffic flow of the lake. Most lakes in my area ask boaters to travel in a counter clock wise direction of travel,So I aways travel clock wise so I see boaters approaching. I'd rather have a DNR officer come check me out than to get rocked by power boaters. Thanks for another great video!
I have thought about this alot. My new/second kayak is green camo my old PA12 was yellow. I think it can matter but if you're aware of your positioning, be stealthy & quiet & make longest cast's you can accurately it shouldn't affect your fish catching. But it can't hurt either. Definitely staying aware of your surroundings so u don't get run over. Exspecialy with all tech everyone has on their boats now. Last year I watched 2 guys in bass boats both run into each other because their eyes were glued to their live scopes. They hit hard, head on!!! It was hilarious & kinda scary at same time. Made me even more aware of my surroundings than I already was. If they can run over another bass boat they can easily run me in my yak over.
The light reflecting thing makes sense in theory... In reality, I’ve caught so many bass right underneath my bright orange PA14, it’s not something I worry about.
I hear you, I’ve caught two over 10 out of a lime green kayak, but it also can vary on how much pressure there is on the fishery in some cases. The most important thing in my opinion is how you play the sun for your shadows
Color definitely matters for kayak surface temperature though. A darker plastic will be significantly warmer in the sun than a lighter colored boat. Does't matter as much now that we all sit in seats, but old SOT boats where you sat ON the plastic, those first minutes could be uncomfortable unless you splash cooled it first.
I certainly HOPE kayak color doesn't matter with the fish, especially since I chose this prize Bonefide P127 in Venom! 😄 I know your thoughts were toward Battleship Grey, but I had other plans.
I have caught fish in every kayak color out there. And as far as recreational boater who have been drinking, so long as they don’t aim for the one in the middle I think I will be fine.
I think this advice is ok for some smaller inland waters, but pretty bad advice if you may be in an offshore search and rescue situation. Probably depends more where you’ll be fishing most of the time.
Chad, my orange flag spooks fish however know for sure by near misses now even in shallow water it helps. Air boats in the grass or drunken Jon boats just to name a couple. Thanks for the safety tips again.
I've watched videos where someone complains because a boat zipped past them. I think he was wearing light colored top and a inflatable pfd. He was in a Hobie, so no paddle the wave around. There was chop on the water so from a distance, his kayak might not have been visible all the time. I don't think we're as visible as we'd like to think we are. Especially to a fast moving boat. With forward facing sonar being used on more kayaks, more people will be offshore and in the path of faster boats. If you are offshore be smart, be proactive.
I'm not that good at fishing so any help I can get is appreciated. I had a bright orange one last year and I'm going to blame that on my inability to land anything! Blue and orange kayaks are on sale so I'm gonna try blue this time.
My setup is plenty safe. I need to have bright colors in the ocean, I fish way to far out to not have them. I don’t ever go out without my flag either. Dry suit is all orange and tan.
My jackson bigrig is the blue green and white scheme, i got it cause i liked the colorations and figured itd keep me from being ran over by pleasure boaters in reality they get even closer trying to get my kayak to flip with the wake.
I had a red one, I swear the other boats were aiming at me. I did an experiment, flying a kite out of my kayak. DON'T ever do that, it drew boats like flies, they were watching the kite and not looking where they were going, I about got run over 5-10 times that day.
My boat is red so I’m screwed, boats try to run me over all the time. For the fish, I just hope they think I’m a recreational kayak until I catch them. 😂
Saw something years ago about kayak color, group with different colored kayaks were heading away from this guy and he watched to see which color was lost first and which lasted longest. Red gone, blue next, yellow , then white. Like motorcycles, I think there is safety in numbers. Be careful out there !
Feel Ya Brotherman. Have a Red Predator PDL. Call it the "Razorback" . It does have the luck of the team. One day wins, next day loses. May re-name it Red Wolf.
And fishing inshore you are required to have a flare gun, so if they don't see your kayak you can always shoot a flare at them. Sorry, I meant that you could shoot a flare for them to see. LOL Some really good advice Chad. It seems as thought you have some experience and have put some thought into this subject. And it also seems like you care about your knuckleheads. Be careful, you might ruin your bad reputation.
@@davidmeeks2405 just because florida does, does not mean that any other state requires it. tbh its absurd to require that unless off shore. Its almsot as absurd as ohios bs kayak registration.
this is MrBear in florida ,good talk the only problem i found with the flag is it is to short should be taller by at least 24inches to be more visable. plus i feal fromwhat i seen a flag should be manitory for all kayaks. by the becuse of you i own a ss127 , never been in a kayak in my life . im was 320lbs when i perchesd it now im 280.i got it two years ago ,strikly in shore fish ,spent 22years werking party boats. thanks for the things you do.
no NOTHING should be mandatory. Theres too many regs etc as it is. While it might be a good idea, a flag could also be dangerous in situations like rivers or under low hanging branches.
@@MysticalDragon73 this is MrBear in florida. as far as mandatory should be inforced when in open water,in chanels, and all salt water fishing in shore and off shoar.as far as fresh water should be mandatory in open water and chanels with boat trafick. i dont think boats are going to be in trees, if in a kayak before you get into the trees put it down like you would your fishing rods.
@@bearbuchanan8341 no we need less government bullshit and interference. Its absurd anyone would push or request more mandatory anything. Are we free or not?
Not being seen on the water by power boaters is their incompetence, ignorance, and/or stupidity. Sometimes they intentionally do harmfull things toward kayakers for their entertainment and claim that they didn’t see them, yet they can see a twig above water 100 yds away and avoid it. Most of us were mostly boaters before kayakers. We know what can be seen.
Don't wear a white shirt because you'll spook fish. Hey speaking of spooking fish let me show you this big dancing construction orange thing that won't spook the fish. Information overload. Fishing isn't this difficult.

Just bought two of the VISICarbon Pro for Christmas presents thanks to you. I never saw them deployed like you did. It was the reason I bought them

G'Day Chad, Loving the content covering interesting topics that are very important but sometimes overlooked!
Thanks Brett

I think a good idea would be to have those rubber strobe lights that you put on bicycles. If boaters can’t see a flashing light then idk 🤷🏽♂️
Is there a price difference between them?
my kayak is white and black and blends in very well with the water especially on foggy mornings. For that reason I have to flags and light on my boat

I did a poll of 100 bass...88% said they like camo type colors the best....needless to say, both mine are camo type colors

many boaters like to buzz kayakers and think of it as fun and a sport. its absurb.

I have red/green on bow n 360 light with flag . Only boat ever came close to getting me ..wake boat . Like riding a motorcycle, head on a 360

I HATE the asshats that think that crap is funny. Theyve clearly never kayaked or recognize the dangers of it. Sadly it happens far too much.

Grey Goose color only!
The flag is a great idea for places with lots of boat traffic.
Awesome tips Chad
Green kayaks matter!
All boat look black from under the water….when a fish looks up the boat looks like a dark cloud
