    Great tips. My 13 yo daughter recently started with her own baking business and just completed her first custom cake order. Two things I advised her to do is 1) Calculate the time it takes to do the job and make sure you make enough profit to make it worth your time, and 2) Specialize in the things you know you do well. She's really good at cake decorating, and she makes great blueberry and apple pies. She plans to stick to those three products for now and grow the business gradually -- taking limited orders that she knows she has time to fill. It's a great learning experience where she has been challenged to apply all the things she learns in school -- math, science, art, communications, etc.

    Thank you for this! I’m 17 and i’ve always had a passion for baking and I just started up my cake business i’ve only really sold 3 cakes so far, and i’m having trouble getting customers even with word of mouth, making cakes for family/friends, promoting on social media, trying to give samples to my mom for her to take to work. I almost feel like no one takes me seriously because i’m so young and it’s just so frustrating.

    • @LaurenMcGowan

      That sounds so frustrating Ashlynn. I know the feeling, when people are like "oh thats cute she has a little cake business". I think its our strength though, to be underestimated. For a long time i only sold 1-2 cakes a month. But it gave me time to experiment and watch youtube (which you're already doing) and figure out what makes me unique. I also started with a lot of kids birthday parties because parents are always in need of treats (espec. nut-free). Best of luck! feel free to email or message me on ig! I'd love to see your work

      i guarantee if i tried something of yours, it’d be better than someone who claims they’ve had 20+ years with this qualification, plus this degree, etc. my point is that yes, you are young BUT you will be successful because you believe in yourself! i’m 18 and i’m also trying to start a baking business myself! i hope you do well!

      @@Joshuarcade Hi!! yes I did in fact have business cards um but little update i’m in college now so I don’t really have time for cakes anymore but during the summer I had a consistent business! I made some decent money as well, but it became a chore and school started back up I couldn’t balance it all. Hoping one day I can get back to it.

    I hear you on the food allergies - for the last almost 8 years I have been only able to eat banana smoothies and organic non GMO eggs - I can have butternut squash with honey and pink salt and butternut squash soup with carrots and honey - but that is it. (Antibiotics did me in) but I have been able to bake/cook again without my throat, mouth and all that swell up - so now I'm starting up a home bakery. But I can't eat a single bite of anything - I have to have my husband or son taste test my baked goods. But I know what you mean about socializing and food - I just bring my smoothies with me everywhere I go - it's tough - but I just look at food a lot differently now - it's just food - anyhow - love your channel -

    • @LaurenMcGowan
      @LaurenMcGowan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry to hear about for food struggles. It can be so frustrating when our bodies don’t let us enjoy foods we like. But when you take away the romance it’s really just fuel.
      I hope your home bakery goes well! Lucky you have your family to help. When I prepare things I can’t eat I rely so much on sight and smell and touch. You still have so much control over texture and and how it looks! Best of luck 💗

    How much can I realistically expect to take home every month if I am getting like 10-15 orders every week and I’m a premium priced bakery? As in, I focus on quality ingredients etc. I just need a ballpark number to know if this is even a realistic route for me. And is 10-15 orders a week a lot to you? That’s the number I have in my head for me to be maxed out

    I am also gluten and dairy free too. I had an allergic reaction in 2011, where I was sick and I was eating constantly with one food. Until I went for allergy testing and found out I have an allergy to gluten. Then 2 years ago, I went for another allergy testing and found out I am allergic to dairy and walnuts.

    Hey Lauren! Thank you so much for the tips. I'm a teen and I want to start an online cookie shop. Sadly my parents don't want me to because they are afraid of liabilities and think I won't be able to manage it with school.I was wondering if you have any tips to help convince my parents to let me start. Thanks!!! :)

    • @LaurenMcGowan
      @LaurenMcGowan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I think you have two options. Option 1 is to focus on showing your parents how responsible you're going to be. You could take an online health and safety course, show them your research on selling cookies in your area, etc. I'd also show them how you plan to set work/school boundaries. An after school job could be about 10 hrs/ week so spending about this much time on your business could help. That balance is such an important skill.
      Option 2, would be to see if you could work at a bakery, or ask to stage or shadow. But this option may be too much time/ not right for you!
      I hope things go well! Keep me updated

    Just think it thru. First and formost must have a passion to bake and create great flavours and good textured cakes. Bake a lot and decorate until it becomes second hand nature. Offer to many people to taste and listen to feedback. Challenge yourself to modify your recipes to cater for a diverse amount of people so you work out what you can and can't offer. Some people have no idea that gluten free requires eggs for it to be best and who to exchange nuts out for seeds and the best gluten free flour so they have no idea its GF. I bake because i love to offer to others i love. Plus i love to enjoy quailty baked goods and nothing better than home made.

      Hi Yawah! I get mine from a local health food store! I had to ask them to order the bulk size bags for me because they didn’t carry them. Before that I would make a flour mix of my own to save money. Hope this helps 💗

Kitchen tour sounds great 👍 seeing how you work on a real order would be cool, from the moment you take the order, get the ingredients etc.

    Hey! I’ve been in a corporate like restaurant for about a year now and have made it to kitchen manager. I’m 18 and am about to be 19. I’m wondering if you decided to do culinary beforehand? I just don’t know to much about the industry and what the next step is honestly. I would love to have something of my own and start working towards that now. I’m just a bit lost in the food world.

    • @LaurenMcGowan
      @LaurenMcGowan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Congrats on making it to kitchen manager! I never went to culinary school. I actually have a degree in communications + minor in english. I thought i wanted to be a food writer (still do kinda). for me, i just tried a bunch of stuff. both in food and other industries. there's so much pressure to feel like you know what you're doing. You have so much time to try stuff and be messy. What are the parts about food that you love? And the industry?
      I'm happy I didn't go to culinary school. I think it makes me aware of less "rules" in cooking and allows me to be more creative and dream. I hope this ramble helps. Keep me updated

    hey! I'm just starting out my own home baking business and was wondering if you had any advice for selling stuff that isnt cakes? I find my niche is cookies and biscuits but its so hard to find a customer base without having a storefront - atm i'm depending entirely on local markets for any business whatsoever

    • @LaurenMcGowan
      @LaurenMcGowan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Hmm, i think you have a few choices; you can niche down with colours, a specific aesthetic, or ingredients. Maybe you use a super limited colour palette, or make very whimsical biscuits, or the flavours are all botanical. something like that?
      Instagram and social media has been huge for me! Giving goodies to neighbours/ friends when i'm testing recipes is great too. Word of mouth plus quality control/ taste testers :)
