Interestingly, the first season of 'Allo 'Allo!' aired in 1982, 42 years ago. This means that 1982 is actually closer to 1941, the setting of the show, than it is to our current time. It's fascinating to think about how time shifts our perspective on historical events and cultural productions

I was lucky enough to see the stage show at the London Palladium. The laughter was literally from start to finish.
I absolutely love it , I was born in 1982 and when I was teenager I just literally waited for every episode in Polish TV . Absolutely gorgeous show , well written characters , every actor just added his genius to this show . It keeps me smiling every time when I only think about it.
Every actor here had his moments and soul added piece of hilarious work to it.

...and the italians were incompetent.
Of all the characters in the show the italian officer is by far my favorite because he's so convinced that he's a big shot war hero that he doesn't realize that everbody else sees him as a joke.
One of the many things I loved about 'Allo 'Allo is that the writers took the p**s out of everyone involved in WW2 - the French, the British, the Germans and the Italians. It was pretty even-handed p**s-taking IMHO. 🤣
Are the British anything like Shakespeare? Or Swift? Or Chaucer? --- Let me put that another way : Is there any NON-BRITISH man who has the level of sensibility and refinement of Henry Fielding? Or Charles Lamb? Or F.H. Bradley? -- Is Kant NOT an obvious petty apologist for the shopkeeper? Is Foucault NOT a pathetic attempt to avoid acknowledging the legitimacy of Marxism? -- A weak modern scholastic obscrantist Roman Catholic anti-communism?
As great as Fawlty Towers was, this was the one show that made me laugh more, beginning to end. I was lucky enough to see the live show in London, after which I could barely walk my ribs hurt so much. Writers, cast, crew, truly a marriage made in heaven. Thank you all for so many tears of joy.

Billy Connolly is the only comedian who has made me walk out of a live show with sore ribs from laughing so much - but 'Allo 'Allo is is definitely one of the funniest TV shows ever - and the British have serious form when it comes to making brilliant comedy (BlackAdder, Red Dwarf, the Young Ones, just of the top off my head). Good moaning and happy Saturday one and all. 🤣
I had the privilege of working with Gorden Kaye before he was famous in this show. He was born in Moldgreen Huddersfield and I was a young cameraman working in Huddersfield for a Film production company. Gorden was hired to appear in an industrial "tape slide" promoting a material handling company for use in an exhibition. I had the job of shooting the photographic transparencies and assembling the accompanying soundtrack. He would tell me stories of the goings on behind the scenes on many of the tv commercials he had worked on. He was a very funny and talented actor and I was pleased that he finally got his big break in TV. We saw him years later at one of the truly hilarious live shows. I wondered if he recognised me sat in the front row! 😂

I Loved this show. i was born 1980 and remember my nan used to baby sit me as my mom worked day time as was at collage at night to study, and my nan would make a Night of TV fun with this show and others. but we both like this as my nan was very open about her life in the war. she would cook the best beef stew before the show and have treats ready while watching.
this show will always remind me how cool my nan was and given me good memerys. Today i was reminded how lucky i was to have that.

Having been a teen in the 80s watching Allo Allo every week here in New Zealand, I just loved the series. I still say almost every day, to this day, "Good Moaning" as Officer Crabtree's greeting and many other such wonderful sayings such as "It is I, Leclerc", "listen very carefully...", "you stupid woman, can't you see I'm comforting her" A timeless classic of very clever comedy, and wonderful slapstick humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane with all my favourite characters.
A work mate and I still come up with many scenes and laughs from this era, such as from Arkwright's Open All Hours, and especially the Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers. Just a wonderful period of clever slapstick humour, sketchs, jokes, clever inuendo and much giggling and laughter! Superb! I shall pass this on to my elderly Mum for a giggle. She loved this series as well.
A classic show that gave us so many wonderful memories and so much joy and laughter.

Ingenious show. Especially the first 3 seasons. So cleverly written and the story always made perfect sense and fit so well to what was previously established. That's the kind of attention to detail you never see in sitcoms.
Eventually, it ran too long, and the changes in the cast didn't help, but I think it will always remain my favorite comedy series.
A lot of the UK comedy shows are not that known in the US, so I had the pleasure to re-watch all those great British comedies with my girlfriend. Not only Allo Allo, but also Coupling, Fawty Towers. and least but not last Monty Python. We actually went to one of the last live shows in 2014. We couldn't stop laughing even when we knew exactly what was going to happen...

Brilliant stuff, it's a real shame as there are just so many shows that deserve more attention, the two Ronnie's, Derek and Clive, open all hours, only fools and horses, red dwarf, the young ones, the list goes on and on and on.
A fun one that is really niche but contains a ridiculous amount of comedy icons is "The Comic Strip Presents", very experimental at the time, quite alot of it didn't work or was just too weird to understand but its worth watching as there is some amazing comedy in there.
A strong start would be "4 blokes in a car" or "for a fistful of travelers cheques"

This was definitely one of the best sitcoms ever. I loved it and could never understand how any of the cast managed to keep straight faces when delivering their lines. I don't like being old but I'm glad I am old enough to have enjoyed this. Thanks for the upload.

I played Madam Edith in a stage production. At one point I had to dress up as Hitler. It was the most fun I ever had on stage 😊

I kinda grew up with this show. I was born in 1982 and the show first arrived in denmark in the 90's (or so) So I actually remember watching it on the I think it was TV2 as I was growing up.. I always wanted to go back and rewatch it but sadly we haven't had a rerun of it on Danish telly for over 30 years.

Well there was some pretty close calls with the Germans and especially the gestapo 😂😂

It ain't 'alf Hot Mum, Dad's Army and 'Allo 'Allo = all fantastic British comedy series all set in WWII. Coincidence? I think not, In tragedy there is humour and the British are past masters of making fun of things even if they are tragic. God bless all the surviving cast members and thank you for the laughter.

Many years ago I was an airline pilot flying holiday charter out of Manchester and like most of my colleagues I watched 'allo 'allo. I was scheduled to fly to Spain the day after watching officer Crabtree say "Good Moaning," for the first time. Our route took us across France, so leaving UK airspace we were handed over by UK air traffic control to French air traffic control. It amused me greatly to introduce our flight in the vernacular of Officer Crabtree which would have been something like this, "Good moaning Brest control, this is Anyair 357, flight level 330." I thought it was such an original joke.
I noted a sense of irritation in the reply of the French controller and realised why within a couple of minutes. The crew of the next aircraft that came on frequency introduced his flight in exactly the same way, obviously thinking he had hit on something original. Then a third aircraft came on frequency and did exactly the same. The I understood why the French controller was irritated, being made fun of by scores of Brit crew that morning, each thinking they were being original.
I think the cast would have been amused had they known that story at the time. Perhaps they did.

I had the great fortune to meet and talk to..... sort of ... Vicki Michelle. I was working for the original theatrical flying company "Kirby" run by Nick Kirby at the time. My job was to lower Gordon Kaye and Carmen Silvera together through the sugar glass granny flat skylight. During rehearsals while I was pulling on a rope, Vicki came over , felt by arm muscles and said " you must have to be strong to do this job". I melted as she was, nay, is gorgeous. I can't remember the nonsense that must have been by awestruck reply. The flying performance in front of a studio audience on the night went off without a hitch. I flew many celebrities in my time with Kirby's but that meeting with Vicki is etched in my mind. What a friendly, beautiful lady!

I saw the stage show. Renee come on to riotous applause, a scene played out and you could feel the tension in the crowd going "say it, say it!..." then he goes "You STUPID woman" and I nearly died, it was amazing the crowd exploded.

True enough. My biggest gripe with Julia Smith is she has no sense of humour. I can't imagine getting through life without a sense of humour.
I watched it every week even though I was only 5 when it started and most of the jokes went over my head. It’s a shame they don’t make tv shows like this anymore, something all the family could watch without the pc bs and that was funny

I will never forgive them for replacing Richard Gibson for another person playing Herr Flick in the last season. Fortunately no one remembers him and Richard is still the real Otto Flick as if there wasn't any other actor ever.
Actor decided not to take part in another season so they had to do something.
There's nothing to forgive, it was Gibson's decision to leave.
I can't imagine anyone replacing Richard Gibson as Herr Flick. Living in Australia, we miss out on so many British TV series but I am not sorry I missed this.
Listen very carefully, I shall say zis only wance..........Great memories of watching this as a kid with my Mam every Saturday night. It just got better and better every week! We would laugh out loud. Every character was brilliant, with catchphrases galore, over the top acting/dialogue and so many double entendres. Never get tired of watching it.
You have to watch out for the German bumbers and farters! And did the long distance dick's(Ducks) ever reach London!?!? 😀

For me, although the complete series is great, the first 3 and a half series were the best. It went downhill a lot when Hans and Maria were no longer in it. The Italian was a waste of space. And Mimi Le Bonk was not a good replacement for Maria. I still have all of the DVDs and my favourite characters were: Edith, Madame Fanny, Helga, Herr Flick and Hans.
Mimi was physically painful to look at. Or listen to.

I love the anecdote about some of the 'Allo 'Allo cast sneaking onto the EastEnders rehearsal set. Sounds like EastEnders producer Julia Smith was missing a sense of humour, which could explain why, in contrast to the hilarious AA, EE was so bloody humourless and depressing.
I understand her being annoyed but total over reaction and she really had no right to tell David to basically fire them and David's response was brilliant.

That slightly "mis-timed" -- slightly "amateurish" -- tone or 'mood' -- is very ''grown-up' -- the debonaire / worldly-wise / well-travelled uncle tells his 'jokes' in a very adult manner -- which is slightly ineffectual but very human -- at ease with being just oneself.
This would never have been made today, too political UNcorrect. In the 80's and 90's comedy was funny, not like nowadays when offending someone is the greatest sin of all.
I hated this show. How many times can you tell the same jokes....
