Thad Bosley or Richie Hebner would have been my guesses; they were both lefty hitters, and Detroit's pitching staff was mostly right-handed. Henry Cotto was their main righty off the bench that year; Cubs probably would have used him off the bench against the lefties in the Tigers' bullpen (mainly Willie Hernandez).
If your thinking the Cubs would of made it to the World Series had their been a 7 game series instead of a 5 games that was played I believe it was the next year they changed it to 7 games for league championship series, no guarantee but who knows with 2 more games in Wrigley the Cubs might have salvaged a win in the NLCS
