My dad cut the ice at the garden from 84-96. Gravy was an absolute beaut. No player was ever more down to earth and approachable than Adam. Gravy had this aura around him, he was soft spoken by choice, everyone in the room knew he could dust them half asleep. When he signed after the games, he signed for EVERYONE. He knew how special it was.

Also worth mentioning: Graves‘ 52 goals back in the 1993-94 regular season with the Rangers were the club’s all-time record that lasted quite some time - until Jaromir Jagr set a new franchise record with two more goals I think.

graves i absolutely love him i still wear his home and away jersey to big games at the garden. however his 52 was in an 84 game schedule yes the nhl played 84 game 93/94 and i believe 92/93

      Before this season:
      06 Jagr 54
      94 Graves 52
      72 Hadfield 50
      91 Gartner 49
Not many 50 goal scorers for the Rangers.

My memory of Graves was 5/5/92:
With Pens captain Mario Lemieux handling the puck on the left point, Graves skated toward him and, with a two-handed chop, hit Lemieux's left hand above the glove, breaking his wrist. While Graves was suspended for three games, Lemieux was sidelined for the next five.

Graves is one of my all time favorite player. I see a lot of him in Kreider. He was the Rangers leading goal scorer but you didn't see players coming in to protect him. Instead you knew he would be the first one in to protect his teamates. I remember going to open practices and seeing him signing for everyone and taking pics for as long as it took. He would even call over other players. He was a players player as well as a fans player.

Gravy was the favorite of much of the NYR fanbase at the time. If you were lucky to catch him outside MSG he would stick around and sign autographs for every single fan. He was the leader in the post Messier years. It's a shame those NYR teams were bad towards the end of his career.

Have you done one of these for Mike Gartner? Also a great player and great guy. As a kid I attended many Hockey Ministries International Hockey camps in Maryland (US). Also called Christian Athlets hockey camp. Mike Gartner was always one of the pros that coached at these camps. This guy gave so much back to the game and it's fans. He sponcored so many kids so they could afford to attend these camps. I was one of them. I now am a coach at the HMI camp in Raleigh North Carolina with Jaccob Slavin. Raleigh was the first HMI camp in the south 13 years ago. The week of June 27-July 1 will be the 14th camp in Raleigh. Now HMI has camps all over the south. As well as the world. That would be a cool idea for a video. The history of Hockey Ministries International. HMI has chaplins in every NHL, all minor league teams as well as JR and college teams. They hold an all star breakfast at every city it goes to. Many current and former pro players attend these camps and events.

I hated him when played for the Rangers, but he was a solid 2 way, gritty player for a long time. Most guys of his ilk are done after a decade, if that. You can’t play that kind of role and not be banged up. Just ask Cam Neely. 52 at the official end of the Live Puck Era is impressive and he had 2 more 30 goal seasons after that. I had hoped Jim Sandlak or Shawn Antoski would have had the same career trajectory, but it wasn’t to be. He was scary in the finals. I believe their top line was Graves-Messier-Anderson or maybe Larmer was on that line. Scary. I was shocked at how the old men were beating us.

Decent tough guy, turned out to be a goal scorer in NYR. Remember having a sticker album in 95 and the middle pages had the 50 goal scorers featured, it was Graves and Sheppard with all the established super stars. Other than that, I can't say I have a special admiration for him, nor any particular dislike.

As Jimmy Carson was the main "piece" that came Edmonton's way in the Gretzky trade, and was then shipped out for the bundle including Graves that helped the Oilers win another cup, it's almost kind of like 99 indirectly had a hand in Edmonton winning that other cup.

Great video but one thing I would correct is that he really wasn’t a dirty player. The slash on Mario was straight to his gloves not any exposed area. Game was different back then with stick work and Late checks. It was a more physical league back then and most teams were 2-3 goons deep per game. Adam wasn’t a goon he killed penalty and power play guy. Great guy off the ice . Lines would stretch around NYC blocks when he signed autographs. Lucky to have him. Wore number 11 until mark messier arrived if I’m not mistaken

Also.. he was Messier’s protector.. in that era graves was never a chippy dirty player. You had way worse out on the ice.

Because most people, aside from devout Penguins and Mario Lemieux fans, have forgiven and forgotten about it and the aforementioned fans should. I understand why they won’t because he is their lord and savior. At the same time it’s been too long and they won that series anyways.
