Many of you have been asking whether choosing a college as a lower preference (e.g., third preference) affects your chances if someone with a lower score has chosen it as their first preference. Here's the explanation: Key Points: Everything depends on the cutoff rank and the seat availability for the category you're applying under. Let’s assume you’re an MS student applying to NM College, which has 30 seats available. Assumption 1: Cutoff: 80 (since only 30 seats are available). Your Rank: 189, and you have chosen NM as your third preference. Another Candidate’s Rank: 160, and they have chosen NM as their first preference. Outcome: Neither of you will get NM, as neither of your ranks fall within the cutoff of 80. So, no matter what preference you gave, you won’t get the college. Assumption 2: Cutoff: 80. Your Rank: 71, and you’ve chosen NM as your third preference. Another Candidate’s Rank: 77, and they’ve chosen NM as their first preference. Outcome: The other candidate will get NM because, although your rank is slightly higher, they prioritized NM as their first choice. Assumption 3: Cutoff: 80. Your Rank: 40, and you’ve chosen NM as your third preference. Another Candidate’s Rank: 77, and they’ve chosen NM as their first preference. Outcome: You will get NM if your first two preferences aren’t allotted, as your rank is significantly higher than the other candidate’s. They won’t get NM because your rank is much better, even though they prioritized it as their first preference. --- Conclusion: Your rank will always matter more than the order of preference, but if ranks are close, higher preference can give an edge.
Many are asking if they can get a college in CAP Round 2 if they weren’t allotted one in CAP Round 1. It depends on the cutoff, demand, and available seats for your category. For the top 5 colleges like NM, JHC, Mithibai, Podar, etc., there are usually 30-40 seats for Maharashtra students and 5 seats for OMS students. Even candidates with a 10k rank list them, showing their popularity. Since seats are limited and demand is high, by CAP Round 2, most top colleges will likely have no OMS seats left. For Maharashtra students, some seats may still be available in the lower top 10, but the cutoff will be higher in Round 2. ,,,,
