Hi! I was just watching a video of the book release interview by Mark Lawrence . He mentioned that the 3 rd book is titled “The Book that held her heart “. He also said it’ll be released same time next year! Super excited to read the 2 nd book as I loved the first one!! Thanks for your great reviews and videos!!

I just finished this yesterday and loved it. I really liked having some other POVs in this one but I can see how people who are most into the Livira and Evar storyline might be unhappy with how the story progresses. I thought that Mark Lawrence gave just enough clues to what was going on that I never felt totally lost (and occasionally overly pleased with myself for figuring things out way before the characters) but still managed to shock me a few times. I also thought the tone of this book had way more humour woven in despite that some topics get even darker and more dangerous, so I really enjoyed that. This is a series that I think would benefit a lot from a reread so I'll probably read the first two again before the third comes out.

I ended up guessing everything before the reveals this time (in the first one I was floored every time lol) but that increased enjoyment for me because I was like… ok I DO get what’s going on 🤣🤣 and I agree I adored the new perspectives. Honestly Celcha’s chapters were my very favorite of the entire novel

In a lot of ways this series is very different than his other series and I love this one the most. A really great setup in book one. I hope you read it and love it too.

Yes. Yes. Yes! Your thoughts are so much the same as mine. Brilliant review. I loved the unexpected direction this took and the new POVs. Can't wait for book 3 to see how everything comes together. If book 3 lands as well as books 1 and 2, then this could be a top 5 series for me.

That’s completely how I’m feeling - I was thinking of redoing my top 10 fantasy series to fit in ASOIAF but now I decided I need to wait until book 3 because I’m convinced this will be coming in as well

Great review! It’s also good to hear you enjoyed Celcha’s chapters, too. For me the first few chapters especially felt exceptionally strong, the circumstances and suffering of those siblings was very moving.

Great review! Personally, I loved Book 2 even more than Book 1. I felt like the plot was tighter in Book 2 since most of the exposition was already out of the way. I'm also so excited for Book 3 next year!

I haven’t read book 2 yet but it’s on my shelf! Ive seen some mixed reviews on it which has left me a little trepidatious about starting just because I WANT to love it. I’m pretty good at meeting books where they are though, so hopefully the shift will work for me as well!

I was surprised by the way it started, and it had me wondering what was going on, because I didn’t know these characters, I didn’t recognize their situation or time. It was a bit off-putting at first, but I very much enjoy his books, so I kept faith and kept going. It slowly started coming together, and then faster and faster became more cohesive and really expanded my view of the world. I’d say it does a great job of avoiding the problem some second books have where so much time is spent providing background and context and motivation all pointed at the resolutions in the next book, particularly when the next book is the final one. He, deftly, and amazingly manages to provide all that, but without it being a slog through necessary, but dull background. Instead, it is another great read where it stands on its own. Impressive and enjoyable.

Book one might also be my favorite read from last year! 5 Stars!
And i was also so exited for book two. i was expecting that it wouldn't be as good as book one since book one was sooo good.
i also enjoyed book two. it had a slight middle book slowness. a solid 4.5 stars.

Well said. It definitely doesn't feel like a 2nd book in that it's only purpose is to set up the 3rd. I enjoyed every minute of it also. I get why you say unwieldy, it definitely is unforgiving in how it taxes you to keep track of a lot of different things. The timelines of everyone, for instance.

I loved the second book as well. It is a lot to keep track of but I really like that. I was constantly engaged and thought a lot about how it all would fit together when I wasn't reading the book. Do you also think book 3 will be longer than than book 2? To me feels like there is so much to wrap up that it needs to be longer.

The thing with me with book one is I LOVED the first half, but felt it dipped in the second half. The dialog and prose in general in the first half was beautiful and the world unique and intriguing, but then in the second half I felt like it seemed rushed to move the plot along and the quality of the writing suffered, so i am not sure how that will spill into book 2. Still i am excited for it and already have a copy and will get to it this year for sure, good to hear your take, Cheers.

Hey, is it your intention to read other Dunk & Egg stories or jump right to A Dance of Dragons next? I saw you read the ice dragon and was curious if you were taking a detour with some of GRRM's other works

The Red Queen's War (trilogy by Mark Lawrence) is hilarious. The main character is an anti-hero and not because he is morally ambiguous but because he is a total coward and freely admits it!

Started reading the 1st book. Alas, so far, it is a standard solid YA novel - competently written, but quite cliched and nowhere near GRRM/Susanne Clark/Gaiman/etc. level of skill (prose/worldbuilding/characters-wise). But may be I am just a filthy snob :)
