Also, remember that this game was played in Pittsburgh. The Conference Championship games used to rotate back in those days. I'll admit that the 'Phins got a bit of a break because it was a mild day with the temp. but it was still a road game. Ken Anderson was also a fine player, the numbers are about even as far as TD's thrown and Int's thrown. Kenny Anderson threw for more yardage, (about 7,000 yards more) than Griese but the 2 Super Bowl Rings he has are 2 more than Anderson. The Dolphins won the Super Bowl and went undefeated that season because they had a TOTAL team, not just because of Earl Morrall even though Morrall was really good in relief.

The 70s were the era of the running back. For a QB to throw six touchdowns in a game during that era would be like a running back having a 300-yard game in today's NFL. QBs in the '70s were evaluated on more esoteric metrics like leadership, play calling and game management. The ability to move a team down the field and rally them in the final minutes. Staubach and Bradshaw weren't putting up gaudy numbers either.
The problem isn't whether the talking heads in these countdowns ever played football. I can give you good analysis on football despite having never suited up for a single organized game of football because I've followed it for over two decades, read about it, and I'm not a homer with blinders on. The actual problem is that most of their talking heads are indeed literal clowns, or the equivalent thereof: professional comedians. The people who make these videos seem to think the only way people will watch them is having wacky people saying wacky things. Surely they could get more sportcasters and former players and other people who are eloquent, knowledgeable, and - most importantly - passionate about the game to make the countdowns worth watching even for viewers who aren't diehard football uberfans.

And it's likely that Don Coryell never forgot this game, because his Charger teams would became a particular thorn in the side of the Dolphins, scoring OT wins in 1980, the Epic in Miami a season later, and then another OT thriller in 1984, and then putting up 50 on the Dolphins in what turned out to be the final win of Coryell's coaching career in the 1986 season opener. The only time in that period in which the Dolphins got the better of Air Coryell was in the 1982 playoffs when a motivated Dolphins team had their way in a 34-13 win. Even David Woodley couldn't seem to do anything wrong that day. And the biggest irony of all may have been when Don Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell when he inserted Dan Marino as his starting QB about midway through the 1983 season (and with similarly frustrating results when it counted the most). And yet, even after Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell, he still couldn't beat the original version of Air Coryell.

Hey, those Cardinal teams gave Dallas fits during the mid 70s. But - yeah - sports history remembers them as exciting but far from great. You could say they were the forerunners of the late 70s/early 80s San Diego "Super" Chargers, who electrified the league (but never won a championship.) Coryell was an offensive mastermind, but couldn't coach defense to save his soul.
It was an experiment the NFL tried to get someone else into the games that day. They switched off hosting with Dallas from 75 to 77 (playing at Dallas in 76), before Dallas got the game back permanently in 78 (it was mandated as such in the contract they agreed to in fact, so that wouldn't happen again).
TheAlfrulz Don Coryell turned that poor franchise into a playoff team. Deserving hall of fame coach and great offensive mind. I respect him more for what he did for that Cardinals team. They went from a crappy offense to making names out of Jim Hart and Conrad Dobler. Look Coryell up.

I felt that Griese was just as good as other quarterbacks of the 70s I'm talking about guys like Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Ken Stabler. Bob had no issues off the field either, always thought he was a stand up guy

I was stationed in the west Germany. This was the first game they ever showed live on the Armedforces net work and I loved it. It was great.

And it's likely that Don Coryell never forgot this game, because his Charger teams would became a particular thorn in the side of the Dolphins, scoring OT wins in 1980, the Epic in Miami a season later, and then another OT thriller in 1984, and then putting up 50 on the Dolphins in what turned out to be the final win of Coryell's coaching career in the 1986 season opener. The only time in that period in which the Dolphins got the better of Air Coryell was in the 1982 playoffs when a motivated Dolphins team had their way in a 34-13 win. Even David Woodley couldn't seem to do anything wrong that day.
And the biggest irony of all may have been when Don Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell when he inserted Dan Marino as his starting QB about midway through the 1983 season (and with similarly frustrating results when it counted the most). And yet, even after Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell, he still couldn't beat the original version of Air Coryell.
I don't think, Fairnorth, that the Cardinals' winning of the NFC East "earned" them the Thanksgiving Day game. I do know they played on Thanksgiving 1975-1977, and got crushed by the Bills, Cowboys and Dolphins. The Big Red ruined many of my Thankgiving meals.

Hey, those Cardinal teams gave Dallas fits during the mid 70s. But - yeah - sports history remembers them as exciting but far from great. You could say they were the forerunners of the late 70s/early 80s San Diego "Super" Chargers, who electrified the league (but never won a championship.) Coryell was an offensive mastermind, but couldn't coach defense to save his soul.

It was an experiment the NFL tried to get someone else into the games that day. They switched off hosting with Dallas from 75 to 77 (playing at Dallas in 76), before Dallas got the game back permanently in 78 (it was mandated as such in the contract they agreed to in fact, so that wouldn't happen again).

The almighty Cowboys didn't scoff at the Cardinals in the mid 70s, TheAlfrulz. From 1974 to 1977, the Big Red and the Wowboys split the eight games they played each other, 4-4.

@@edlawn5481 No they didn't. Lions played the Bears in 77, and the Rams in 75 the other year the Cardinals hosted. They've never played the Lions on that day, and with the contracts being as they are for them to both host in perpetuity, likely never will.

I felt that Griese was just as good as other quarterbacks of the 70s I'm talking about guys like Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Ken Stabler. Bob had no issues off the field either, always thought he was a stand up guy
