Although it is really beautiful, and I am amazed at what you did with it, the best part was the one little sentence at the end about this having belonged to your father AND that is why you wanted to save the handle. I have a ball peen hammer that belonged to my grandfather and even though it needs a new handle, there is something important about being able to hold the same surface as he did. It provides a certain measure of continuity. Thank you.
Wood takes decades to grow and to be fit to purpose. Metal can always be recycled. I never understood people attempting to "recycle" tools with an history, who throw away the wood parts as a first step in their restoration project!
Your dad made that handle out of literal garbage. By the look of the mushroomed end of the handle, that didn't stop him from getting a lot of use out of it. It's so cool to see you restore it using some of his original garbage and some of your own, newer garbage to make it like new. There's poetry in that chisel.
Great video lovely restoration. I work at a skip company and the amount of old handtools like this thrown in the skip is heartbreaking to think of the history behind them, i have to bring them home with me.
@@RaNi1501-h1x even better!! When he worded it as it "used to be his father's" I thought that maybe his dad was no longer with us. Even better that you're here to see it!
And his memory is going to stay in the family for generations to come; your originality and sense of conservativism will be appreciated by your offspring when they go through the history of this beautiful chisel. Thanks for preserving the handle.
Very nice restoration. I like your solution with the metal part of the water tap 👌. It is so gentle that you keep the handle because of the fact that your dad was using it ! Keep up the good work
Beautiful. I'm inspired to set my bar higher and be a bit braver restoring tools. Thank you. Caveat. I spent 4 or 5 hours today tidying up 3 old, neglected, chisels. I was pumped at the result. Then....
Amazing work I love the sight of a perfectly restored chisel There’s just this appreciation you feel The thought of creation and civilization And how far we’ve come as caring beings of Planet Earth 🌎 🌍 🌏 no matter of our Pesky Pride of corner of origin even though Some of us have done great things more than others and some of us have done disgusting cruel things to destroy it like Adolf Netanyahoo.
And it was your dad's. Simply awesome. I am glad you did the over the top rework on this. Too many times people chunk the handle and start over. A craftsman sees the challenge. I love the addition of the plumbing pieces.
Incredible work! I love that you are preserving the handle. Wondering if you might consider incorporating a couple of bowtie joints to prevent further cracking of the handle? Might extend the life of the handle even further. Thanks for sharing your great craftsmanship!
I have a joke, as this appeared on my screen prior to this video I was working on a woodworking demolition and the handle came off the chisel! It wasn't vintage it's practically brand new! 😱 It's those inexpensive models now I have to strongly glue it back to the handle! I had to share this. Thank you for showing this video.
Wow you did a much better job than I will ever do (and want to do as well), however you probably gave me a good idea on how to deal with the back end which is as bad on mine. The other idea that came to my mind was to use a carriage bolt and keep the original ring (because there is already a ring).

Thank you also, you're right, that is the main reason.
