    I bought one of these over 10 years ago, since day one the truss rod has needed constant tweaking to get rid of the bow. Until finally one day, the rod wouldnt turn anymore.
    The bass and electronics are nice, but the necks are piles. I swapped mine for a fender aftermarket and a Seymour Duncan antiquity II bridge pickup. It's a killer bass now

    • @gryzew
      @gryzew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Neck/body joint fingerboard hump, happens on all of them, both pricing and construction wise: bolt on, glued in, neck through. Neck wood transitions from being a bendy stick to being held firmly in place by the body joint, warping loves to happen in that area but at least once it shows itself and is leveled it should be gone pretty much forever. That's why I prefer used guitars, fresh smelling straight out of the cardboard box guitars have those first few years under string tension for all the twists, warps and fret sprouts etc. to show up in the wood. Get a 5+ year old one and whatever could've went wrong usually already did. :)

    I've had two of these, first one showed up from Amazon with a ski jump as a neck so I dumped it on Kijiji, the one I have now actually plays really well. Not a fan of the plastic fretboard which I've now severely scarred because I use D'Addario Prosteels but I guess now I can call it "road worn". Also drilled pickguard screw holes in it but left it without a pickguard as a tribute to Jaco.

    5/64th is 1.9 mm approx and 3/64th is 1.19 mm..for the string height adjustment...if you are doing neck relief, 10 thou is approx 0.25 mm ,12 thou is 0.30 mm...in case anyone was wondering..

    • @GoonSquadLifeMember
      @GoonSquadLifeMember 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can split millimeters, but you're right overall. It's mostly guesstimation, but sometimes I prefer metric over SAE, just seems more precise. I use either/or for reference's sake.

    neck is doing a swoop because you only shim'd half of it, you wanted to raise the part of the bridge that attaches to the body but you tilted it when you screwed the neck back down... and given the thickness of the neck there that isnt what bends as you found out the bending starts where it thins down... as you stated even factory come with shims in there. Im betting there should been a factory shim in there from the getgo. why not use a 3ft metal yardstick to check for straightness along the whole length. (this would also tell you ahead if you need a partial shim or a full one)
    Also for metric depth heights you just use a caliper/depth guage and then measure it from the top of the string and subtract the width of the string. at best the smallest ruler only goes down to .5mm in graduations just googled around.

  • @oysteivi
    @oysteivi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Walnut tone shim for better sustain!

  • @BobGrimminger
    @BobGrimminger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We tell our students measuring on any sort of graduated scale that you can estimate one more digit than is shown. If i have a mm ruler (with fine enough lines) then I can estimate to the nearest 100 um.

    • @scottr939
      @scottr939 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same can be applied to any ruler, including ones that show 64ths of an inch, which is already less than .5mm. That is why Dave usually sets his string heights to a 'skosh' under 5/64ths.

Its because their factories all use brand new, high tech equipment ...mainly from Germany and the tolerances they can get even with massive production runs are amazing. All the equipment in use at Gibson is out of the 60s.

    There's a caveat with the "looks straight-ish, should be safe to buy" advice. First thing I'd check on a dead straight or stratigh-ish (eyeballed only) neck is if the truss rod isn't loosened already. If it's a one way truss rod then there's risk the wood has a back bow and you can't ever introduce enough relief. Forward bow at least you can try and do something about, as you've done so on your channel.

      I have a Chinese copy of a Yamaha fretless - it is great. Active too. Was tricky intonation job - simply because fat fingers make quite a difference to note. Used a sharp edge to act like inverse fret - two octaves of decent intonation per string. Put LaBella Nylon coated flats on it - killer. Maybe we are luckier with climate in southern England.
