      The resistance is what really matters and the wire you use matters. Measure the ohms and wind till you get what you want makes way more sense.

      Thank you for watching and leaving such a kind and positive comment. I thought the exact same thing when I started researching the subject. The first one I made using a ruler nails and fridge magnets and wound it with my hand and when it worked and sounded pretty good I was really confused. It also made me decide that a cheap pickup probably isn't a bad pickup. There arent enough parts there...Its just that getting a custom one or certain brand. Is just a matter of them using a different type of wire, magnet, and winding technique to get a particular tone. Thanks again I'm just glad I could help you out.

      Thank you so much homie, If the first one you make doesn't work well or at all just keep at it. Tinker with reflowing solder joints and even re-wind it if you have to. Its not a hard thing to do but the wire is very delicate and sometimes the smallest thing will prevent it from working at 100%. Once you get a good one though, its like second nature and you can start changing magnets rewinding or custom winding pickups for friends and such. Let your mind run wild. You may even invent the super mack daddy bad@ss pickup on accident, on the first try.

    I love the background music while you're making the pickup! I've learned so much from this video----I've watched it several times. The only part that wasn't clear to me had to do with attaching the coil wires to the lead wires, but I bet you show that in more detail in some of your other pickup videos. Thank you for your creative, innovative, educational, and very entertaining videos!

    It's fantastic to see people throwing out most of the ''rules and myths'' and just going for it and getting results that are pretty damm close to manufactures quality for a fraction of the price. I've often thought that the price driffrence from 30 to 150 bucks gets a little ridiculous and that probbably from 50 bucks you're just paying for the name. Nice video and nice pickup.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write such a kind comment Morten. SO right you are. I grew up in an classic car restoration shop that my mother and stepdad ran and I saw then as a kid a theme. You can buy a decently fast 1980s Mustang or Camaro for example for hypothetically lets say 3500 bucks and it will probably already have some performance parts and mods on it as they often do.. it will be a tire burning fun machine but it you want to make it twice as fast and have a competitive racecar will cost you well over 10,000 dollars and months of weekends in a hot or freezing garage... not just another 3500.. If you now want it twice as fast as that... not 10 grand more it'll be about 35,000 dollars and a year of work plus test and tune etc. Its the law of diminishing returns almost all that extra money is in the last 5-10% better If you learn to build and mod the parts yourself though, you can do it almost as good for wayyy less. Buy pipe and a welder learn to weld exhaust instead of buying it pre made and paying for brand name + install, buy a die grinder and port your heads instead of buying name brand racing ones, learn to tune and diagnose it yourself etc. Same with gear. A Squire telecaster is a decent guitar especially a made in Japan one from the 80s. But a classic 60s tele that is twice as good is 20 times the price... but you can build a damn good custom one for a whole lot less and still have the tools at the end to do it again. I think it mostly comes down to whether you have more money or time and the drive to want to build you own things for pride and self worth's sake. Hell same with tools, buy a cheap tool that will work decent or an expensive one that will be 15% better for 3x the price or maybe you can build one somewhere in the middle.

    I am just getting the interest in building my own 10-30 watt tube amp.. real basic.. and it led me to want to also see what it would take to build the electronics in a guitar, specifically the p90, and hotter single coils in an eventual effort to build my own t-style guitar and amp set up.. just to see the time, money it may take to do such a thing.. this is probably the best vid I’ve seen instructionally geared toward like you said myth busting and purist ousting lol. Thanks a ton.

    Amazing video!
    I need your help, I am trying to build a pickup but I don't have that orange cable. I bought some spool of copper for welding, but the resistance of the pickup is about 0. So I wonder if the orange cable should be stripped??

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for commenting. But, no stripping the welding wire wont help you out the problem is that it is already conductive on the outside so that it can work in a mig welder making contact with the tip and passing current. (I was a welder for many years) What you need is a copper wire that is coated so it is NON-conductive on the outside. It has to keep from making connection with the other winds of wire or it will have zero resistance as you have found and will be shorted out with no sound. The polyurethane or varnish coated wire you need can be found in coils like inside a wall charger or a hair trimmer. It is very thin like smaller than a hair but this allows much more winding and higher resistance that will equal a louder pickup. You will need to sand or burn the ends though so it will remove the coating and make contact when you need to hook a wire to it. Here is a video showing a pickup I wound with the wire from an electric hair shaver. th-cam.com/video/VLMNXMMaU8o/w-d-xo.html

    Love this, dispelling the bs that flies around. So, if you wound about 8000 it would be about 8ohms, 10,000 10ohms? So you don't need any kind of wood spacer between the two wood pieces? Use put the poles in then wind around them? Hmm. I suppose you could use the right metal screws/poles so you could adjust the height of each pole, but the outer ones might come out and mess with the whole spacing thing??

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Michael, The wraps to ohms thing all depends on pickup size and design and wire type and coating type/thickness as well as tension or stretch put on the wire and how scattered or uniform it is. I'm sure their are calculators you can find online that show certain ball park estimates for winds vs ohms on certain pickup designs with a specified wire sizes and traverse or scatter. Different types of pickups have different builds, an old strat pickup was made with a black thick cardboard material as the flat work and the wire was just wrapped straight on to the poles but I think the original P90s had a wooden spacer in the middle that the wire was wrapped around, They also had adjustable screws like you mentioned, it is possible with the wooden spacer because it doesn't scratch the coating off the wire and short the winds out if you screw it in and out. Many of the newer pickups and even the older cheap pickups use a 1 piece plastic bobbin that has a spacer built in, that can be a good thing because the wire cannot corrode and short to the poles over the years, a strip of tape on naked poles can prevent this as well but it may change the sound maybe 1-2% from an original 50s pickup, its all small changes but it all adds up to a finished product in the end. 10 things slightly different at 2% change equals a 20% different operation in the pickup so basically a totally different sound waveform to the amp so after amplification and depending on the gain stages of the amp and the pedals etc = completely different sound to the ear.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The magnets in this pickup have the south pole glued to the back of the bobbin. but it can be either as long as they are both the same... It doesnt matter which way unless you are using it with other pickups and in that case you want them to match for in phase or be different from each other for out of phase... you can check it with a simple compass.

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment CU. Yes the split pickup is a double 3 humbucker I have a build and test vid of it here: th-cam.com/video/Nz5GDlFqHO4/w-d-xo.html

    In your split humbucker build, you mentioned that you eventually added 12 more neodymium button magnets to this P90 to "match perceived output."
    I am doing a single pickup for an acoustic guitar. Could I simply add on additional bar magnets (instead of button magnets) if I wanted to increase this P90's output? Or would 2 bar magnets be enough for an acoustic pickup, where I am not using multiple pickups? How does more magnets affect the tone (brighter or warmer)?
    Thank you so much!
    I would much rather make my own pickups instead of invest in a real one, because I am only be using it pickup to test out an amp that I ordered, but only have an unplugged acoustic.
    I have an acoustic-electric guitar coming on the way, later this year, so I won't really be needing an external pickup. This project would just be so I can test my amp with the guitar I have right now, until the new guitar comes.

      Thank you for watching. 2 bar magnets should be just fine for an acoustic pickup maybe even one bar. You can do some experiments before you decide to glue it or them on. More magnet and diferent magnet placement can slightly brighten the tone and affect dynamics like how thumpy or twangy it is but it mostly just makes it louder. More winds of coil wire like 8-10 thousand will also make it louder but it will dull the sound a bit (you will still need several thousand winds minimum for it to work right though). The best way to control the tone and the overall volume is to vary the pickup placement. how close it is to the string = how loud it will be and if you place it towards the neck end of the sound hole it will have more bass and if you place it closer towards the bridge it will have more treble sound. You may also catch the bug and find yourself experimenting a lot with the pickup and maybe even building another. If you get it to sound the way you want you may even find that being an actual magnetic pickup and not a contact pickup like in most acoustic electrics it could even sound better than the new guitar in certain ways. Best of luck and if you have more questions or any problems feel free to message me. It may take me a while to respond but I'll eventually do so. If all else fails there are some cheap acoustic pickups on the market at as low as $10-$20. They wont sound fantastic and wont be able to be easily modded to your tone preferences but you will be able to test the amp and play in the meantime. Thanks again for checking out the video.

    Pretty sure you built yourself a larger single pickup. P90 pickups don't have pole pieces but adjustable screws for poles.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. Its kind of a mix of an even bigger Jazz Master pickup and P90 magnet setup and mounting minus a backplate (would add too much bass) but Its just specific to this guitar build and a function of working around the rare earth magnets to prove a point I've even used framing nails as poles in tests and as long as its steel it makes next to no difference.

    Try ska and add buttons neodymium to lows

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rama. I actually did end up adding 12 neo buttons on this pickup when I built the split coil 3 pole humbuckers for the neck. It didnt have enough output to compete. The reason I didnt just put it on the low strings is because the split coils are designed for a very bass heavy vintage strat sound and I am going to put them on blend knobs to act like a physical equalizer so I wanted the p90 to stay very bright and high. Thanks again.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hahha ah, I shouldve been more clear. A normal pen shaped or solder station type soldering iron uses a resistive heater that is safe for magnets a big industrial pistol-grip style iron uses a big coil to generate the heat and it puts off a strong magnetic field... the normal little soldering iron everyone uses is safe.

    So you're dunking it in hot wax to insulate it? I'm gonna try this build and this is the bit that I am unsure of.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment Jack. The reason for the wax is to kinda glue the coil together. if the winds are loose the pickup with react to vibrations like if you tap the guitar you will hear it and it can feedback at high volume but if you are going for a more open acoustic sound and not using high volume or distortion you may want to leave it unpotted or put it in the wax for a shorter amount of time. Thats part of customizing your tone. as well as how much magnet power you use will affect volume and gain: more is more here. If you want a darker blazing strong modern sounding pickup use more winds like up to 9000-12000 or just fill the bobbin up. If you want a softer more articulate in the treble range sound like a vintage pickup use less winds like 3000-5500 or just 3/4 fill the bobbin. They all work together and you can make it sound any way you want with trial and error. It makes me so happy to hear that you want to try some experiments and build some things. I apologize for the late response I took a break from youtube but I'm back and fresh with better gear more projects and ready to work and help in anyway I can. If you have any problems or questions feel free to drop a comment and I will try to get back to you in a more timely manner. Thanks agaiin
