You have something special going on here. Telling people they are wrong, no down votes, and then providing solid info haha. Love the videos man. One of the best drum channels on the Tube.
Man, you are one of the best player/teachers out there today. I love your no-nonsense approach to drumming / music topics and I learn something every time I watch your videos. A couple of things I used to get my students to do was: 1. Listen to the great keyboard players in jazz, and the rhythms they use to comp (play chords) and mimic that. 2. Sing the tune in your head and accent off kicks in the melody. Don't do it the same every time through the tune - vary the rhythms. You will find you start to hook up with what the other players are doing rhythmically if you have the tune in your head.
Outstanding!! I've played drums for 40 years and have never understood what you just explained until now. I'm one of those rock drummers who sounds stiff when I attempt to play jazz. You've given me something to work on. Thank you.
Hey Rob! I just wanted to say as a fellow drum teacher, how much I appreciate these lessons you do! It makes me evaluate my teaching methods and make sure I stay sharp for my students! Thank you for really inspiring me with these videos, as I’m sure you do many others!
Wow this was helpful. I have only been learning drums for 5 months, and this really helps with my fills sounding clean and simple. Your my favorite drum channel out there. Don’t stop making videos!
Definetly one of the best drum channels on the tube bro. There hasn't been a video that I haven't learned something from you man. Even your tuning vid was an eye opener. Keep em coming man. God Bless and stay safe Rob
Practicing my pushes and my quarter note skipping while wearing my MAZIMUM THUMPIFICATION tee and I feel like the coolest cat in the junkyard tbh. In my basement in Ohio on a Friday lunchtime but it feels like I'm in a smoky Parisienne club in days gone by, long cigarette hanging from my lips, playing to the late night crowd. Thanks, man. I appreciate your lessons 100% best time on TH-cam right now
I love your lessons! I've been a percussionist for decades but my drum kit playing is rudimentary. I like seeing a lesson that gives me something solid to do without treating me like a beginner!
Your jazz videos (and all your videos, for that matter) are excellent. They focus more on flow and creativity, rather strictly adhering to the standard ride pattern and quarter note pulse on the kick that so many videos focus on. I think it’s important to practice the ride cymbal pattern to get it as clean as possible and to allow for full left hand independence while maintaining that, but I think it’s more important to think in terms of the melody and accents and phrases. I’m still very much a beginner with jazz drumming, but I feel like my progress was delayed initially by focusing strictly on the ride pattern and comping/independence exercises. It was great for developing independence, but what I was playing didn’t sound very musical. Your videos have helped to change that. Keep up the great work. It’s highly valued by so many people, and helps make the world a better place.
This is a game changer, man! I've been trying to get into jazz drumming lately and your channel is my go-to resource now. It's easy to get frustrated when you're just starting working on this subtle style, especially when you grew up in a non-swing environment. Every time I see you play, it gets me pumped up to keep working. And when you break it down, I see that I can learn this! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Beside all the goodies you do , I love your little studio and the way you set it Perfect set up as far as the monitor right behind you and all the other gadgets you use , and it’s very bright and inviting to motivate just spend all the tim any drummer can have in such cool cozy set up . And your touch it just speaks for itself .
Rob i learn so much from you its unreal. I am breaking into jazz and tou 13 flow vid. Is really really good. Ive been drumming sine grade school. In 57 so im showing my age but i dig you style and i will be practicing the forward motion. Jazz is a whole nother animal. Smooth quieter. Its cool man. I dig it. I will keep watching. Keep cookin bro. Im listening. Have a good day thanks again
Rob. Thank you mate..I’ve been playing drums for 30 plus years and professionally in the 90s thru 2000.touring around playing Country during the line dance craze...and Damn I’m So Friggin Board with all of it..so I started on this journey and you are the MAN..Thank you so much.....I Only Thpught I Knew How To Play Drums...I found out There Is Huge Difference Between Play the Drums And Playing Beats.....it driving me Crazy and So Are you my Man....But I love it I’m learning again......thank you so much....Jim .Hammond Louisiana....👏👏👍👍🙏🤪🤪🥁
Yo, Homes, I am 70, been playing for 60 years but I have onlybeen playing Bop for 5 yrs. I was all R&R, Funk and Hard R&B drumming until I was asked to Join a Jazz band. Been listening to Buddy, Blakey and Max since I was 10 as a Fan. This lesson is perfect for us. In fact I see in the comments that there are several Old Vets that are learning from you. Great teaching!!!
Rob, just started watching you last week.Your vids are incredible; you sound amazing, and your a natural teacher. I've learned more in just two lessons to blow my mind. Thanks!
You are a very good teacher, Rob. I have watched several of your lessons and your explanations and demonstrations are really good. I have been playing many years and I pick up stuff from you all the time. Keep going. I picked up a little exercise from you last night that I really like where you play a bar or two of triplets and then a bar or two of single paradiddles. It is a great exercise for your hands. Keep going. Your lessons are teaching many drummers how to get better.
Hi Bob Brown - meet Owen Brown. My greatest love is early Delta blues & maybe Texas Blues together with big rock anthems. But I was into Miles Davis & Billy Cobb & began playing some blues - but I was stiff & square as you described. I wanted to drive it forward but just didn't know how or what I should be practicing. I did a part course in basic jazz playing with Stephen Taylor before I pinned down what was the most useful to me & that took me to a drum techniques course & now am doing a full on Rock drumming course. But what you have shown here is great & I am going to fit that in to my schedule for sure. I followed your No1 module on soloing and hope to pursue those as the year progresses. Thank you so much for your ever so practical insights & demonstrations. Regards Owen
Hi Rob, Just discovered you! Glad I did, really learning a lot and enjoying your videos. Your teaching style is easy to understand; you make what at first seems likely to be complicated very understandable and pretty straightforward to learn. I’ll keep watching for sure. Thanks a million! Peter, Hampshire, UK.
Insanely great. I laughed out loud when you were making the faces when playing the 1 and then playing the push. Awesome stuff, thanks so much for this. Very helpful.
Rob, since your post about the future of your channel I only watched this video but can already feel the difference and the improvement ! I can see a great future for you channel, keep up the good work. Cheers from France.
Rob's absolutely on it. I watched a video and the next week my band leader could not stop smiling!! I of course told him where I got the new information :) . Thanks Rob!
Funny you mention a square. Rock music has the four heavy beats like the corners of a square. No matter where you are within the measure, you can always “catch up” when finding one of the corners. I like to think of playing jazz much like a circle. It’s a continuous flow where you can get lost or thrown off of the circle. It’s much more noticeable and also harder to get back in. Great video.
I really like this video, man. It covers a lot of things that may seem pretty basic, but they're very much important and still commonly overlooked. And the image with the rectangle was a great explanation. Thanks a lot!
I tell you you sound on the drums is beautiful ! I m a fan of you I listen a lot of drummers,,and you to me, come above the top, sound whise and musical always! inspiring no comment top
Man, I’ve been looking to step up my drumming game some more (particularly in the jazz field), and I gotta say that your style, both in playing and teaching, is exactly what I need. I’ve only been subscribed for a couple days, and I’m feeling a strong addiction to your channel already. Like, I’m not usually a TH-cam binger, but I’m hooked. Thank you for what you do!
I like be your lessons! You get to the point! This is a great lesson on pushing the beats! Students do seem misunderstand a lot about time keeping in the beginning... it’s just part of the path.
Been digging your vids for awhile now and found this one particularly helpful in improving my swing feel. Had been avoiding the downbeats, but the accent/push exercise will really take the command and feel to a new level despite my being a 67 year old fart. Thanks man! Just pushed the like and subscribe buttons.
Your videos are excellent. I'm been playing drums for many years, and now am starting a jazz combo. The jazz player and keyboard player have studied jazz in college, so I've got some catching up to do -- learning the lingo "playing the head", comping, etc.; and of course learning how to not play so "square", and learning the "Real Book Standards". Thanks for breaking it down, I'll be checking out your other videos. Hopefully, there's something there about bossa rhythms. That rhythm seems to be quite prevalent to jazz tunes as well.
I never took the time to actually put effort into trying to learn some jazz, because I never understood the concept behind it, until now. If u can ever wrap your mind around jazz, it is amazing for your playing abilities all around. Still though, it doesn't come easy for me, definitely feel at times I don't have enough limbs, or wonder how I ever learned to walk. Lol, jazz is a mindfuck, for me anyway.
Great lesson man ! I have my students do a similar exercise using the dotted quarter, eighth or " Charleston" pattern .( On all down beats and upbeats) Works wonders
Ei Rob, thanks for your openess, sharing with us one (of many!) points of view: a bar or two before Ton hit, you change the LH grip. Is that a natural body prep for the incoming hit? Did you notice, and more importat, Did you mean tô do it?
Hey Rob. Just discovered this tutorial too. Have tried to play a bit of jazz (my dad is a pro jazz drummer here in the UK), but I kinda struggle a little. I am looking at your snare and you are just tickling it really gently. So smooth. I suppose I need go back to basics and start playing uber soft? I've noticed your "buzz" strokes on the snare as well. My spang-a-lang on the ride is good (thanks to you). I also try and play the kick soft, but it is really hard. Most of the time it comes through really quite loud when I am still playing as soft as I can. Maybe I need to feather it and play heel down?
Thanks Ron. This lesson has been very helpful. Click onto the blue box when you get a chance. You can hear lessons Ep 13 and Ep15 in my vids. Thanks for helping my playing. G.H.
i think classic comp phrases or certain famous "fills" or "pushes" would be cool, it seems like there is a bag of very common language that everyone who reeeeally listens to jazz, does. Any suggestions on listening material? Any and all, even the obviously iconic albums, please include all you can think of if you have the time. Thanks Rob, your channel is a lot of help, I am subscribed and watch every new vid. ✊✊
At the age of 66 I'm finally learning how to play some proper swing beats from this guy. Hallelujah Rob Brown!!!
Just getting into it myself much Prosperity and blessings to ya ✌ ☮
Me too. Just getting started at 59!
You are swingin’ like nobody’s business! Thanks for the inspiration.
You have something special going on here. Telling people they are wrong, no down votes, and then providing solid info haha. Love the videos man. One of the best drum channels on the Tube.
+JEMadaras Thanks, man. Hopefully we can get more people to discover it, too 🙂
