Comparative RNA sequencing analysis for pediatric cancers

- RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) has entered clinical testing for cancers. The most widely used applications of tumor RNA-Seq are the identification of fusion transcripts and the detection of expressed mutations. This talk will explore another clinical application of tumor RNA sequencing, the analysis of gene expression. RNA-Seq-derived gene expression is relative and requires comparisons to other samples. I will present a framework for comparing RNA-Seq data from individual tumors to large compendia of data from thousands of other tumors obtained from published research studies as well as prospective clinical trials. I demonstrate applications of this framework for refining the diagnosis of a rare tumor and identifying overexpressed oncogenes that could be targeted by therapies. After viewing this presentation, viewers will be able to:
1. Understand applications of RNA sequencing in oncology
2. Understand applications of RNA-Seq-derived gene expression analysis
3. Appreciate how shared genomic datasets could be used for contextual analysis of individual pediatric cancers
