Melankolia - Canon in B Minor (Taylor in Autumn)

  • Taking the original Canon (1668, Pachelbel) and transposing it from D Major to a much darker B Minor, this work serves as my first true attempt to cover and creatively interpret one of the Masters. Hear for yourself if its any good or not, but I found it a worthwhile and fulfilling (if not utterly frustrating) experience.
    Recorded for Taylor.

    Actually, B Minor is the relative minor of D Major, so that's why it sounds kind of like the original. :)
    Good job on transposing it dude!

      Other scales that are relatives to D major and B minor are E Dorian, F-sharp Phrygian, G Lydian, A Mixolydian, and C-sharp Locrian.

    Kind of chilling, but in an interesting, fantastical way...something I rather like. Very different, but very cool :)

    The first half is absolutely mind blowing, however the violin part in the second half sounds generated, repetitive in the way they sound. It’s the only criticism I have, otherwise amazingly well done. Good study music.

    What you've produce has an interesting effect, but... well, strictly speaking, there's no "leading tone" in the harmony you've devised. Dominant chords (those that use the 5th degree of the scale as a root) in functionally tonal music are practically if not literally always major in quality, so every "F# chord" in your harmonization should have an A# in it rather than an A natural.

    • @ravenrush7336
      @ravenrush7336 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily. The major 3rd in the dominant chord (especially dominant 7th), which is also the leading tone for the scale, serves the purpose of resolving to the root, so if we are not resolving to the root it's perfectly fine to use a minor 3rd instead of a major 3rd. For example, when I transpose Canon to natural minor, I usually do i - v - VI - III - iv - i - iv - V7. Note that the second dominant chord is a minor chord, since it does not resolve to root, but the last dominant needs to be a major chord to resolve back to root.

      Hmm... In my opinion, his purpose is to add deeper sadness as F#m in the end of progression; Bm - F#m - G - D - Em - Bm - Em - F#m.

    Strictly speaking, you haven't put it into B minor really. Your F# chords need to be major rather than minor.

      Timothy J. Bowlby that I think would give it more of a harmonic minor feel considering a Bb is the major 7th of B. And in B minor there’s a dominant 7th which would be A

    • @nicholasliu5788
      @nicholasliu5788 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nostalgicmind3432 what you need to do is understand the function of the two different dominant chords.
      For instance, in the descending passage B, A, G, F#, E, D, E, F#, the first A should be A natural as it's a descending scale. However, the last F# should be a major chord as it's an imperfect cadence.

    Damn.
    Canon in B (major) is easily the weakest to me so I'm not surprised it's among the strongest in minor, and particularly the most daunt (though the song can't really be that dark by nature).

      In any pitch, Major is the brightness. It's the hope. It's befriending a wild animal. It's the marriage or the amicable divorce.
      Minor is the abject depression. It's seeing the coyote you're friends with get demodex. It's the inamicable divorce.
