Funny coincidence, I bailed on my wild camp last night. I just wasn't feeling it in my tent at around midnight. So I packed up in the dark and drove home for 1-1/2 hours. There's no shame in it, as you said. Maybe it was the helicopter hovering nearby for couple of hours that broke me. Keep up the good work good man, thanks for everything

It's great to see a budget friendly setup. In the states most TH-camrs push high end equipment. Most people just can't put 700 dollars into a tent or 500 dollars into a sleep system. Great job.

I chuckled when the clip flashed up of you eating whilst saying that guy's name. Personally, I enjoy seeing all aspects (ok, maybe not ALL) of a wildcamp, and eating is one of those things that helps set the scene, especially after a bit of a hike and you know that food is replenishing all the burnt calories.
Anyway, another nice video. I'm very slowly wittling down the weight of my pack, gram by gram, but a long way off getting down to the level you have here. Nice work!
Edit: Forgot to say, you should never feel bad for bailing. Follow your gut, and if you're not enjoying it, what's the point when you could be doing something else?

26C... I guess that's hot for you blokes but wait till you've camped in 40C. That's when you pull up the vehicle and set up your tarp, chairs and cooler (or fridge) and just sit in the shade and enjoy the serenity while the kids splash in the creek. Sleeping might happen but too often you just lie still and sweat. Mind you, you don't need as much wood for the campfire... Right decision to pack up and go home. As we say in Australia; "any idiot can be uncomfortable in the bush..." Hot weather use a tarp and a mozzie net, tents are too hot.

  • @jaspurr6173
    @jaspurr6173 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Regarding how 'warm' a sleeping bag is also depends on 'you' meaning how much body-fat you have 'blubber' to keep you warm. I am of a 'thin' build and of course that means that I feel the cold more then someone who has more natural body insulation, I have to layer more then most people to keep warm. Selecting/choosing an appropriate sleeping bag is very difficult for all hikers/campers getting the right one is tough going.

This is why I never pitch a tent in an open space, especially if I know it’s going to be sunny. I actually pick it based on what the weather will be like the next morning. If it’s anyway sunny or warm, I’ll always pitch under trees. If there is no trees, I’ll pitch the tarp over the tent in the area where I know the sun will rise. Not only helps keep the temp down, but also blocks the light out and gives you a few extra hours in the morning.

It''s possible the rash you got on your legs was from the sap of a weed such as (new growth) cow parsnip, growing in amongst the grass. The sap splashes on you when you snap the stems whilst crunching through the grass. Worth noting that the sap of this and some other weeds is phototoxic which means that, even after you wash it off, it's sometimes pre-sensitised your skin to ultraviolet light so that the rash can reappear when exposed to sunlight, even some time later. I've been caught out by it in the past, ploughing along a very overgrown footpath thinking I was OK by wearing walking trousers, so now I'm careful to avoid such situations. There's no need to get paranoid about it, though, at least not in the UK - the leaves are instantly recognisable once you know what to look for (lots of good YT videos available on various umbellifers like cow parsnip) and you can usually step around them easily enough.

    Hope you are good !!
You done the right thing there

in laying in a sweaty tent ⛺️ getting
your; 🥜🔩🌰 even more sweaty 🥵
as the night progresses !! You must
have pitched your tent 🏕 next to
    to much 🐑 sheep 💩 !!
I would have done the exact same
and bought some 🍟 chips on the
    way home 🏠!!
A few years ago a guy I know had the same
experience and bailed !! - when he went 🏠
the window 🪟 cleaner had popped round
to “do in inside” of his windows (with his dog) whilst his kids were playing outside.
His wife (now ex) had a
bit of explanation to do !! He arrived all; “red and blotchy” from the bites as well !!
    Nice homecoming !!
    Mind how you go !!

Uncomfortably hot, sweaty and insect ridden! Not the best conditions for wild camping. Thanks for sharing Ben. How are the Altra Lone Peak mid boots doing? I had the older model and found them very comfortable but whilst walking the Southern Upland Way they leaked and caused my feet all sorts of problems. The most comfortable sleeping mat I have is also the most impractical, as I found out last week in the Peak District. Having recently got back into trekking, have spent way too much on gear - including the Helm Compact II which you personally recommended and you were *not* wrong!!!!! Thanks for that!!!! But having spent lots on some items I saved on others and went cheap on a mat with an OEX Traverse 5. Tell you what, it is comfortable AF!!! but never really considered how impractical it was for backpacking until I tried to pack it. Over 1 kg and the size of a cocker spaniel :( Ended up doing that noob thing of attaching it outside the bag because I really could not fit it inside.
Will keep it for car camping but am now looking at another one I think you owned? The Exped ultra.

Mick D. sounds like a wonderful bloke!🤣 The rash on the legs are more likely midge bites! I used to get them on my camping trips abroad.

Well done for having the balls to "admit defeat" and to show it on TH-cam. Even if you had stayed out you probably wouldn't have tested the bag as you would have just lay on top of it.
It might have been a good evening for trousers instead of shorts and a long sleeved shirt (I've packed both items {plus mozzie head net} for my trip to Scotland in the morning - it saves on smidge as less skin is exposed).

Good video. Most Scottish and Wales campers will look to camp away from wind blocking things like trees as wind knocks midges etc down low and the insect smoke rings give you some breaks when in your tent area. But I think excellent call life's too short to put up with a crap night for no reason.
