    My father, at the age of 14, fled Lemberg just ahead of the Russian advance. His aunt and uncle got the last train out and made it to Kraków. He had to take the road and made it only as far as Przemyśl, where he remained for the entire siege. When I studied history in college, I did a paper on the Galician campaign and the siege of Przemyśl. I also delivered a talk before the New York Military Affairs Symposium on that subject. Thank you for giving so much attention to this important and fascinating campaign, too often forgotten in the West.

    Guys, trip advice. Mount Nidže and Kajmakčalan, on FYROM and Greece border, still has outlines of threnches, used shells all around the place, helmets pierced with bullets, remains of hand grenades, cartrtiges...And a shrine with serbian soliders remainings, with their sculls in it. Very interesting

    I think that this trip is a good indication of the widespread acceptance and respect this series has earned everywhere. I agree, that one of the chief reason must be the continuous effort the creators make to go beyond the various clashing propagandas, which still festers historical narratives and in its place present a synthetizing, neutral view instead. Kudos for everyone who committed themselves to work on this mammoth project.

      Similar things happened on the western front from more lethal gases. During the winter the gases would settle coats and other clothing and then vaporize again when they entered a warm dugout or similar place.

    Watching this series in real time has given me a massive perspective on just how massive and important the eastern front was, especially in 1915-1916. In Australia our history is very biased towards Gallipoli and the Western front and we don't get that other perspective. But it's hard to understand Verdun and the Somme without also understanding the Brusilov Offensive and the Italian front.

    Outstanding Gentlemen. Really outstanding. For somebody from the Pacific Northwest who even if I knew what I wanted to see I couldn't get there. So luckily you guys can so I can see all these cool places on your videos. And you really get more of an idea about what a Titanic struggle it really was. Thanks for all your hard work!!!! One more thing. I've heard several comments about people being afraid that in the distant future that people wouldnt remember or be interested in ww1. In around 30 A.D.(yes 30A.D. hang with me I'm almost there) three Roman legions got ambushed by German "barbarians" and all three were destroyed almost to the last man. The Romans wrote about where it happened so in the first decade of the 21st they had a big archaeology investigation and found all kinds of evidence about a two thousand year old battle including the physical locations of these events. I wouldn't be surprised if people won't still be afraid of setting off a gas shell two thousand years in the future. It will be painfully obvious that a huge war took place in our generations. I think that future generations will know more than we do about how it really was during this war. Hopefully we learn our lesson. That's it.

    I follow you weekly since may 2015. You're doing a fantastic work! Simple, fun: but at the same time you show very well the extreme complexity of history, the different points of view from which historiography is made and you never overlook the moral, existential dimensions of such a great tragedy. In my opinion, you're setting new higher standards to historical documentaries. Congratulations!

    I know I'm late to the show and this won't be seen by the crew, but this is seriously one of the greatest shows to watch! Not only can you tell they all care about the subject matter, but they allow us to see some of the behind the scenes and into these personal moments while they are on site... it's just so cool to see! I didn't know much about the First World War before this series, and have become fascinated by the history I wasn't taught! Really well done historical series!

    I very much appreciated this very informal discussion on your travels. It was well done, friendly and very natural. It is very pleasing to think of subscribers to the channel travelling to meet you. BTW my dad landed at Normandy following D Day. He was awarded five battle stars for the major campaigns of Central Europe. After driving through Bavaria his unit ended the war in a wheat field in Czechoslovakia one of the most eastern penetrations of the Allied armies. You can appreciate that I have a close affiliation with European battlefields. I have learned so much following your excellent excellent program. Bravo to the entire crew!

    @ 5:00 interesting things to note about the Fort, design similarities with forts from the US Civil War and also British and Commonwealth pre WW1 forts, this fort also shows the change in construction materials between bricks and stone to concrete, but not reinforced concrete. Reinforced concrete would be shown during WW1 as being the only affordable construction material for use in fortifications apart from amour plate or cast armour, that could hope to withstand artillery bombardment. The use of many arches in the construction, and evidence from inside the entrance wall where damaged @ 5:02, indicates to me that concrete was used in mass pours but lacking in steel reinforcement bars or mesh.

    Hey Indy, as someone who is half Polish myself, I've always wondered which nation had the most ethnically Polish soldiers since "Poland" during the war was split between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia. I am also planning a trip to Poland to visit my Grandmas hometown outside of Warsaw and everything I see about traveling through Poland it seems like the people are really nice. Was that your experience on your recent trip? Keep up the diet, I mean great work that you guys do

    • @Naganopl
      @Naganopl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will try to answer instead of Indy. It's difficult question but most of the privileges was for the Poles in Austro-Hungarian army. They had even formed legal "Związek Strzelecki" (Riflemen's Association) and "Polskie Drużyny Strzeleckie" (Polish Rifle Squads) which turned to "Pierwsza Kompania Kadrowa" (First Cadre Company) and then to bigger polish legions to fight against Russian Army under leadership of future leader of the Poland Józef Piłsudski. The most difficult situation was on the German Army where the Poles was under big germanisation (Kulturkampf).

      It is a very grand place... the American graveyard... but that feeling of awe is why I personally did not like it as much as the English graveyards... they are smaller but feels a lot more intimate...

    It is remarkable how some of these sites survived WWII. In reading some of the post Soviet history texts, a lot of areas were not heavily contested. Liviv was the center of a major tank battle in 1944, that along with the Battle of the Bulge a few weeks later, broke the back of the elite SS and Wermacht panzer armies.

    Hi Indy and team. Here a suggestion of location: Monument of Gentioux-Pigerolles (France). Its column has the inscription: "Maudite soit la guerre" ("Cursed be the war"). I am not a pacifist (in fact I hate pacifism's rethoric), but this is really interesting. Maybe some French viewers can give you more details.

    Very interesting. I like the details that TGW bring out. Most are completely unknown to me.
    As for the disparity between versions of historical/war events, as a young teen I read histories of a particular battle of the Korean War as 2 friends of my father had been there. The Australian version noted the contribution: of U.S. planes and tanks; Indian Ambulances and Field Hospitals; New Zealand Artillery; Australian Planes and Infantry; and many other nationalities fighting for the United Nations. The British version centred on their efforts with some aid from Commonwealth Nations while the United States Military Forces were very lonely.
