This is an excellent saw. The Boreal 21 rips through wood, it's quick to assemble, and it possesses a large saw blade that can process bigger logs. You'll see it rip through some desert juniper here. KTM takes us to this cool desert wilderness. This saw is recommended. -nutnfancy
nutnfancy that timing! I was literally lamenting missing out on the sawvivor yesterday as I was putting together a car pack. I didn't want to use another Bahco laplander, so was going to start hunting for something like this :) Got my TNP Cadet the other day, #487! Keep up the awesome work, these are my favourite videos!
Miss the camping/backpacking vids.....long time viewer/supporter and loved the camping videos back 4-5 years ago.... I use the Sawvivor to this day cause of your review and praise of it. I'll order this now, thx again!
Been using my Dustrude for years and love it. Needed to get my daughter a saw that's easy to assemble so found this over a year ago on kickstarter. Tried it and loved it. Nothing but good things to say about it. I still carry my Dustrude due to its lightweight and simple design but grab the Boreal when hiking with my daughter or wife just in case they need or want to use it. Great video!
It's great to see another video on what wilderness gear you use. My current hiking/backpacking/camping kit is made up mostly of Nutnfancy recommendations. Thank you and keep up the awesome work.
These are by far my favorite kinds of videos nutn. Don't get me wrong, I love the guns, knives, and watches, but for any kind of outdoor gear review or comparison or adventure, I always make time to watch the video
Silky saws are not made to 'push saw' they cut on the back draw, which is why you broke it. The instructions state this and once you use it correctly would cut all the wood you processed today.
Also...it is an arborist saw and used by craftsmen that actually know what they are doing. Silky is not a saw for the general public or bushcraft and survival situation where one really does not want to think about whether it is a pull saw or not. When you're in a survival situation the mind is not working in a "finess" mode but in a "caveman" mode. I am a Silky a fan and hate it when ignorant people (who are just too happy to reveal that on you tube) comment on the weakness (and it has by design and purpose) of the Silky saw. My advice to you (TNF) is if you keep breaking Silky saws then stick to what you can handle. This Boreal 21 certainly looks like a great if not perfect bushcraft saw for the general public.
Jo S silky saws are great. No doubt. But when choosing a saw for Bush craft, overlanding and camping I prefer a steel that is less brittle than the Silky...even at the expense of speed. When a tree falls across the trail on my way out I don’t want to be concerned about cracking a blade. Often someone else is traveling with me using a saw and may not have the finesse that the Silky needs. That is where a saw like this really shines.
Can you review folding bolt cutters? Specifically the ToughBuilt vs Olympia vs others? I can predict a good POU discussion for WROL or BOB/emergency kit
For at least 30 years, camping stores and catalogs have sold those diamond-encrusted cable saws for around $10. Always wanted one as a kid but I never knew if they worked.
Great vid as usual; I really like your field reviews & especially your backpacking / middle of BFE vids out in the wilderness. Another option, if you like this saw, is "Bob Dustrude's 21" Quick Buck Saw" from four dog stoves (also comes in 24" & 30"). Was the original "folding buck saw" that this "Boreal" is based on / copies, & costs $54. The story behind the old retired guy in Minnesota who originally created the design & makes them in his free time, is pretty awesome as well. I ended up getting one of these after watching your "Sawvivor" video & finding out they were no longer in production. My 21" weighs 14.5 oz (depending on which blade I'm using) after I shaved down the wooden locking handle a bit to better fit my hand; weighs 15.0 oz in stock form, and folds down to 22". Also, it's more squared off in front & has a lot more clearance between the frame & blade, which I've found to be VERY useful when taking down & processing 8-10" diameter trees (sometimes the only dead wood you can find in high traffic areas are larger diameter trees everyone else looks over). It's also tensioned very heavy, so much so that the back spine visibly bows out slightly when locked. NEVER had any issues with weak tensioning even when the blade is being pinched by a 8"-10" diameter standing tree blowing in the wind, or when the tree leans and completely pinches / locks the blade solid half-way through a cut where you have to kick & yank the saw free to get through on the backside of the cut. Anyways, good stuff. Keep it up!
Don't worry about unbalancing the environmental balance by cutting on ash juniper. Ash juniper is an invasive species, which before permanent human settlements, was suppressed by wildfires in 2-5 year intervals. Civilization largely frowns on raging wildfires in their backyards, so modern day fire suppression has allow mesquite, ash juniper and other invasive to encroach on ecological systems.
And now Magpul makes a 21, and 27rd Glock mag. I need to take mt G2 Subbie out and play with it again. I think to get the front sight changed you have to send it back. Just posted your video on the KelTek forum. Will do on the Hipoint forum too.
In case anyone is curious, I've contacted Agawa Canyon about blade tension adjustment. I'll post another comment when I get a reply. Be interesting to see what they say! Here's hoping it's not just canned PR tripe.
Iv uaed both the boreal 21 and the silky bigboy AND gomboy 300. I prefer the silkys. Tmi don't have uses with them binding. The boreal is much longer folded and doesn't cut straight.
bought the "Sawvivor" apx 8-9 years ago via your review...great saw. guess what cant find blades and apparently gone as you say. looks like the boreal is the new best option that i can find. thanks for your reviews....btw...friend of someone you might remember from the shot shows...Steve Mayers from Rock River Arms....hah! keep rockin nut!
Was hoping you'd come across this, seeing as how the "sawvivor" had bit the dust.... I'd love a deep snow camp vid with that bad boy at the helm. Good job, nutn!
I may not be the first to point this out (I didn't read ALL of the comments), but this appears to be essentially the same as Bob Dustrude's Quick Buck Saw (I honestly don't know which one came first.) In 21" version, however, Bob's is 4 oz. lighter.
That folding action of that saw is awesome, it's a nice backpacker. Although my favorite is still the silky gomboy with large teeth Light weight and cuts through 10 inch logs no problem. You broke that one 'cuz you were using it wrong, its a draw cut saw, that's why it broke on the push. But yes, folding saw are easier to break, I just love the super light weight. Love TNP, have been subbed since 2011.
Still using the Silky saws with great success, still have the old Sawvivor, both work well, Silky better, tho. Wilderness saws are a freaking must, can't understand why the low demand. Thanks for the review.
At 10:44 is Nutn' referring to the the pocket chainsaw that uses a real chainsaw chain, the one used both hands? If so, it was recently sent out in the BattlBox mission 20 which I actually looked pretty good in s00tch's video, I was thinking about possibly grabbing one but if Nutnfancy is so quick to say it sucks then I'll have to pass.
I've had my sawvivor for a few years now, and what I hate is that little red plastic tensioning screw. I can't get enough real estate to really crank it down, or it creates a hot spot on my fingersh. Plus I'm always concerned that I might breaking that piece, especially if I used leatherman pliers. Other than that I love my Sawvivor! But this quick fold out style does seem real nice. Fun review Nutn!
I have a 10'' corona saw and I like it because its around 10oz and it cuts on the pull so i don't have to worry about the blade snapping. I would love to have that saw but it just to heavy to cary for my setup, which unlock you my pack doesn't always weigh 80lb instead i max out at around 40lb because I'm 13.
I've been looking for a 'SawVivor' or something like it forever... finally, this looks to be a credible alternative. It looks like this thing sells itself.. someone will figure out the blade tension option eventually, perhaps in version 2.0, if they pay attention. Thanks for another great video!
Saw review - back to the basics :) I also found the sawvivor was out of production and got a sven saw. That and a silky have done me great. Thanks for the great vid nutn
Do you use tws(Wyoming saw) anymore? Just picked up the 11inch and am very pleased with the construction. Thought about drilling some holes throughout the system to shed a few Oz's.
I like that quick flyby of the watch; if I thought it looked cool, I'll seek it out. You've built your reputation on not showing off crappy watches, albeit differing taste in looks. Do you have any plans of compiling a list of good-to-go list of gear, organized to gloves, watches, EDC knives, etc? Almost like a nutn seal of approval?
Not a fan of the Sawvivor, I bought it a while back and found that its not the right saw for me in my environment. Here in NE Pennsylvania, we have a lot of hardwood forests and not so much when it comes to the softer woods. I have been using the pole and paddle folding bucksaw and love it.
Great vid. Definitely gonna pick one of those up. It will fit on my VStrom perfectly in the PVC tube mounted in the left side. Good to see you doing a field review again. Now, how about some more TNP motorcycle vids...
There's some more in the pipeline, you'll probably see them coming along soon enough. Kinda sad that the guy who bought my V-strom has no idea of the history. I stripped all the fun stuff off it so it looked like any other base model. It's too bad, it was pretty cool! -TD
Hey I don't think you'd like it but there's a product from schrade that's an axe with a long saw that folds out of the handle. I think if it was well made and well executed it might be a good alternative. Also are you gonna review any caracal products? How bout that Radom msbs?
Been looking for something since your review of the sawviber. Tried to find it online but no luck. Will look into this one seeing the work it did. Did you by chance look to see if they had a bone blade as well for meat processing. the beloved viber did.
Say Heah Nutn'Fancy, Which blade was on that saw. I ordered my Agawa 21" Boteal Saw in the Black/Yellow and the All Purpose blade, I wonder if the Aggressive Teeth would be better, I live in NorthEastern U.S. Thanx You in advance.,,.

dude, ontario put out a new version of the beloved RAT 1 in D2 and carbon fiber, around 70 bucks.. what'ya think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that
seems like a good design...but the silky big boy weighs less...cuts every bit as fast if not faster...and is more than adequately strong...ahem if used correctly that is. the whole thing with saws is use what you've trained with. if you are used to pull push cut don't use a silky.
With some good tape and a rattle can you can do all of that, but the mag has to have been constructed before 1994 and you have to be careful never to shoulder the assembly. :) -TD
Great timing on this vid Nutn! I've been mulling over adding some type of saw to my systems in my head, but haven't been able to quite find "the one". I feel as though a quality machete with a saw back is the perfect choice. Maybe not as efficient at sawing thicker branches as heavy duty dedicated saws, but certainly sufficient, and it has dual use as a machete also. Just my thoughts - love your vids btw brotha been a TNPr for just about over a year now! Keep up the great, honest content and reviews my man!
Gerber Freescape? 16 oz., and folds up like this one. $42.08 Prime shipping on Amazon. Don't have one so don't know how it is, just throwing it out there and not reading all the comments to see if it was said already. G-Shock all day baby, Rock-on TNP....I'm out
Keep in mind there probably isn't a real situation with them. I lived through part of the Cold War. We always were hearing about how Russia's want to nuke us or how much they hate us and how war was on the rise. None of it were true or ever going to happen. Russia has no desire to harm us.
Why didn't you use a hatchet to clean off the limbs of tree, rather than the back of the Boreal saw? Might have messed with the tension of saw blade, that you was complaining about! I've always been taught not to abuse a tool! A saw is to cut wood, not beat it up! Use the right tool for the job, it might last longer!!
where do you go to find open land like that? I'm in oklahoma and I've been all over the state and everything is owned by ranchers or oil companies and vacant govt wilderness is just non-existant

Are different blades available? Wood isn't the only thing you may need to cut.
@@Jayhawkga It supposedly comes with 3 blades, including metal.

Glad to see a infield review again!!! It's been sadly missing the past year or so.
That's what I'm talking about....that 1190!!!! It loaded to the gills Nutn I love it!
Ive had this on my radar for a long time. Love to see this for more information!

I'm not sure why I LOVE this video.
Another great video. Thank you for reviewing the saw. Good to know I can buy something so helpful and compact.
I love my Sven saw 21" folding saw. I been considering dropped down to the 15" one for backpacking.
Hi I purchased one with a spare blade, and the carry case and with shipping to Australia it ended up costing me AU$180.00.
Very happy with it/
I was wondering what happened to you! glad to see you back nutn.
Can you review folding bolt cutters? Specifically the ToughBuilt vs Olympia vs others? I can predict a good POU discussion for WROL or BOB/emergency kit
That could be cool, it'd be nice to find some that don't chip their teeth clean off! They're good to have-TD
Thanks for responding and your service Tactical Doodle!
Cool saw, like how it folds.
For at least 30 years, camping stores and catalogs have sold those diamond-encrusted cable saws for around $10. Always wanted one as a kid but I never knew if they worked.

Hey Nutn I would love to see a tabletop comparison video of this saw and the Sven saw and possibly some similar saws.
Looking to add something like this to my gear. Great clearance and stability.
And now Magpul makes a 21, and 27rd Glock mag. I need to take mt G2 Subbie out and play with it again. I think to get the front sight changed you have to send it back. Just posted your video on the KelTek forum. Will do on the Hipoint forum too.
Finally! Been waiting for a long time. Good vid.
Silky saws are not push cut saws. If you are putting pressure on the push motion and it breaks, that is your fault.
In case anyone is curious, I've contacted Agawa Canyon about blade tension adjustment. I'll post another comment when I get a reply. Be interesting to see what they say! Here's hoping it's not just canned PR tripe.
It's pretty much the same design as the Bob's Quick Bucksaw, that can be purchased at Four Dog Stove.
Yep, total theft of Bob's design.
I'll have to pick one up soon!
Iv uaed both the boreal 21 and the silky bigboy AND gomboy 300. I prefer the silkys. Tmi don't have uses with them binding. The boreal is much longer folded and doesn't cut straight.

maybe off topic i a bit here but i would like to see some reviews of hot tents and small wood stoves used in such situations

It seems like a tank, will consider if my diy wooden bow saw fails since my sawvivor still works from a decade ago (long before you reviewed it)
Do you use tws(Wyoming saw) anymore? Just picked up the 11inch and am very pleased with the construction. Thought about drilling some holes throughout the system to shed a few Oz's.
Try the dry wood blade its awesome.

thanks nutn been looking for a saw.
excellent up front video rewiew..very helpful & thanks for posting..
the sawvivor is awesome!
I read the thumbnail as boreal witness saw. I like that better

Yeah I know. Your overview helped me decide to buy mine. Thanks.

i want to see you try the Silky Katanaboy!
Been looking for something since your review of the sawviber. Tried to find it online but no luck. Will look into this one seeing the work it did. Did you by chance look to see if they had a bone blade as well for meat processing. the beloved viber did.
silky saw are the best they really are good for cutting big wood
i wonder if a spare blade could fit in there when folded up.
good job! i was looking for a good saw.
Would some sort of cooking veg oil spray work instead of the WD40? Looking for a more natural lube for the job
Great video as always nutn :)
so what type of land do you do this kind of stuff on? public? private? some sort of designated wilderness?
Say Heah Nutn'Fancy, Which blade was on that saw. I ordered my Agawa 21" Boteal Saw in the Black/Yellow and the All Purpose blade, I wonder if the Aggressive Teeth would be better, I live in NorthEastern U.S. Thanx You in advance.,,.
Went to their website to order one. A quarter of their products are sold out. No way to run a business! I'll keep looking for a good saw.
Hey Nutn I bought a cadet from cutlery shoppe because yours ran out, I ordered the hour you put out the video. It took a week for him to post it it's been over three weeks and I still haven't got it. I will never be buying from Cutlery Shoppe and neither should the majority
I order from them all the time, never had a problem.
shcmoly but do you live in Australia where it takes anything two months to come
No, good point.
Silky saws are the way to go.
Hey +nutnfancy have you ever tried pb blaster? As far as an penetrating oil, PB Blaster has always been my preferred oil.
Timothy Soen Kroil is to PB Blaster what BP is to WD40. Kroil is way better.
great video well done loving the content
I clicked on the link in the description but the item is currently unavailable on Amazon.
this saw would pack awesome on the outside of my backpack or nicely slide in my kayak and take up no room at all. neato.
Wounded13 Here in the Pacific Northwest a saw like that in the trunk is just what you need on old logging roads for the random windfall
dude, ontario put out a new version of the beloved RAT 1 in D2 and carbon fiber, around 70 bucks.. what'ya think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that
Love this saw but the blade does not stay completely strait and your cut won't stay strait. Need to find a way to make it not flex and cut crooked.
Sven Folding Saw 15" or 21" is lighter, more compact, tension adjustable and readily available. good alternative
how about a new multi tool review... leatherman signal?
seems like a good design...but the silky big boy weighs less...cuts every bit as fast if not faster...and is more than adequately strong...ahem if used correctly that is. the whole thing with saws is use what you've trained with. if you are used to pull push cut don't use a silky.
Do you plan on reviewing the new Ruger lcp 2?
fellow hoosier and tnp fan!
Does this come in FDE? Can it take Glock mags? What's the best scope mount for it? Is it California legal? Haha...
With some good tape and a rattle can you can do all of that, but the mag has to have been constructed before 1994 and you have to be careful never to shoulder the assembly. :) -TD
+nutnfancy lol!
nutnfancy made me laugh for sure!
Awesome saw but does it take glock MAGS.
I honestly can't believe this video is less than 45 minutes
Gerber stole the idea already. Gerber Freescape Camp Saw. $50 at REI. Only a 12" blade though and listed at 14.8 oz.
I love how Nutn has $1300+ on his amazon gift card lmao
Great timing on this vid Nutn! I've been mulling over adding some type of saw to my systems in my head, but haven't been able to quite find "the one". Ah, soaking in the silence, yes. Something much more available out west vs. back east. That's why I moved.
$1335 in amazon gift card balance. Damn, someone likes you.
Good review but you don’t smash branches with the saw and ask why it’s jumping on the next branch you cut. Just my $0.02.
Gerber Freescape? 16 oz., and folds up like this one. $42.08 Prime shipping on Amazon. Don't have one so don't know how it is, just throwing it out there and not reading all the comments to see if it was said already. G-Shock all day baby, Rock-on TNP....I'm out
you should do a video on the whole situation with russia. be good to see what u think
Keep in mind there probably isn't a real situation with them. I lived through part of the Cold War. We always were hearing about how Russia's want to nuke us or how much they hate us and how war was on the rise. None of it were true or ever going to happen. Russia has no desire to harm us.
Looks like a harbor freight special
Why didn't you use a hatchet to clean off the limbs of tree, rather than the back of the Boreal saw? Might have messed with the tension of saw blade, that you was complaining about! I've always been taught not to abuse a tool! A saw is to cut wood, not beat it up!
Use the right tool for the job, it might last longer!!
where do you go to find open land like that? I'm in oklahoma and I've been all over the state and everything is owned by ranchers or oil companies and vacant govt wilderness is just non-existant
well its official I'm going to try to get an paid apprenticeship with a construction company out in the county
Hows BuggetNuster been, nutn?
Exactly. I have been wondering that and am hoping they didn't have a fallout of some sort.
buggetnuster?
Not how you set it up or take down. Plus don’t use it as a a hammer to break away branches.
Wouldn't a lightsaber be easier/better?
