Hello everyone, I'm today's video I will be discussing a story sent into garmin inReach by Alex Korkishko. He, and his friends and his 75 year old father were on an Alaskan camping, and rafting trip when disaster struck only a few hundred yards from their campsite. But then between them and the emergency teams at Garmin InReach (IERCC) the story has a very positive ending!
Thank you to Alex for sharing your story with Garmin and for your inspiration and strength🙏
Thank you all for watching and please be respectful in the comments if you choose to leave them 🙏

I love my Garmin In-Reach Explorer+. I haven't needed it yet. However, just having the peace of mind while well out of cell range is worth the rather steep price. I even have the global rescue insurance to pay for the first $100K USD of a rescue. It's like $18/year.

I took a spill in a canoe in ice cold water while shooting Class 4 rapids and I'll never forget how that cold water seemed to suck the air out of my lungs and recovering my partner and the canoe was like trying to swim in liquid cement mix. As soon as I got to shore I started a fire to warm us up (I always carry a butane lighter in a zip lock bag). If I had not had training, this would have ended very differently. Even with a life vest, your clothes suck up all that water and make you much heavier. Be careful out there.

You and your kind ways are all we need for Christmas (or whatever holiday each viewer celebrates). Each of your programs is like an amazing gift. I know sending cards to so many persons is something you would live to regret (and then you might feel you had set a precedent for following years). You can do a live show.... Or send a video card of yourself wrapped in holiday lights or out partying with sasquatch ..lol

Wow! I love stories like this. Sounds like everyone did everything right and didn't panic. I'm not a back country camper or hiker (just a day hiker) but if I were, I would definitely invest in a Garmin device. It could not only save my life but perhaps someone else's life also.

Great story, Bryan! After that story you posted about the guy who faked hypothermia so Garmin would rescue him, this story shows how it really should be used -- for real, legit emergencies. I am so glad they were able to get the Dad out of there and all is well. How scary! Thanks for providing such high quality, fascinating content. 😀

I was on the edge of my seat hearing this story!!! Of course triggering the SOS was appropriate! The elderlycan go downhill fast. !That Garmon inreach can not be too expensive or too unnecessary - absolutely everyone who goes into the wilds should have one and have it activated prior to their trip. Absolutely amazing 👏 🤩

I love when stories turn out this well!!! When you perform CPR for a long period of time it is completely and fully exhausting, these men were so smart to have one person doing chest compressions and the other person doing rescue breathing. If there are two people trained this is how it is supposed to be done! Using this method is quite possibly what save this man's life!!!💚🍃💚 Thanks Brian as usual for another wonderful presented tale of the wild!!!

You should look into a jibjab Christmas ecard - if they still do those. They’re super cute and can be personalized in many ways and they’re free! You’d have to have an email list though I think that’s something that could be compiled with a Google doc form, where it’s secured (if you will) and only viewable to you, the creator, and the person filling it out can request their own copy of the email too. Just an idea - I can help if needed but I’m sure you got dis!

Great story, I am in Australia, I love watching your videos, amazing country beautiful scenery, and such a compassionate person (you!) This story is a little different, but I am wondering with a lot of the stories of missing people, do most of them do you think meet with accidents?? or is there something more sinister. Seems so many people go missing. We have that mostly in the desert outback areas, but we don't have as much high mountainous and forest type countryside as you do. It intrigues me and saddens me as well, so many very experienced people as well go missing there. What a wonderful story of family and friends and the rescue team. What an amazing service. Love all of your work. Vicki in South Australia

You could share how your channel grew this year, more merch ideas, maybe do a live and give away a couple gift baskets of survival gear? Do a live auction type thing. Have different sized baskets and have people give super stickers and draw names? The smallest donation gets the smaller basket….etc. I think there’s 3 different super sticker amounts? If that makes sense?

Being an expert can be a very dangerous condition; situations that would look bad to a less experienced person may be dismissed by the 'experienced' one. It can lower the survival quotient. Soooo glad they made it. And very glad the father was rescued. I doubt if anyone else would have had such a great outcome. Also great to hear they were well equipped with the Garmin emergency GPS device. Wonder if there is a cost involved by pushing the button? Whatever it was ... well worth it!!

    • @kazak4x4
      @kazak4x4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It depends where the rescue is coming from. That is a great question though and I wish garmin would be more open about it. The call gets routed to the local s&r , then they decide what tools to use for the rescue. In our case the heli came from Alaskan national guard s&R, so it was completely free, since they use it as a training tool in realistic situations. If a heli came from a hospital, then I'd have to mortgage a house to pay for it. Garmin offers insurance for the cost of the rescue as well, which might be a good option. Hope that answers your question

PSA… I am a dirt biker and often times ride alone in remote areas. Of course anything can happen so I purchased a Garman in reach mini and I take it with me on every single ride. Not only does it allow my wife to track me and see where I am but obviously if I have an emergency it could save my life. One of the really important thing… Purchase the additional life flight helicopter insurance 100%! If you don’t you could end up with a $50,000 helicopter bill and that is something you absolutely do not want. It’s not very expensive at all and it is absolutely 100% worth having.

    • @GEOMETRICINK
      @GEOMETRICINK 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly. If a raft overturning can literally kill you because of how cold the water is....MAYBE they shouldn’t have been rafting that day. Take grandpa kayaking out on the beautiful lakes in the middle of summer. It’s safer, warmer, and if the kayak overturns everyone goes for a nice, leisurely, swim. No emergency services necessary.

There are 3 options. Mini doesn't have a screen so have to be paired with the phone for regular messages, the one I have has a map screen to use as a GPS and also pair with the phone and the more expensive unit has a touch screen. The subscription plan and coverage is the same across all units.

I’m glad it all worked out for them but I don’t think that was very good judgment bringing his 75 year old father into that class of rapid,
    especially with those water temperatures.
When you go into extremely cold water you can involuntarily inhale and drown and even more commonly,
    suffer cardiac arrest.
He sounded like he was a large man
if it took 4 of them to handle him,
    even if they were fatigued.
It certainly could have turned out a lot worse,
    that’s for sure.
A lot of places don’t have that kind of response and people shouldn’t assume that a chopper is
    always on call.
    Weather/maintenance issues
    and/or
    pre-existing missions can leave you
on your own until further notice.
    I am NOT criticizing-
I am simply pointing out that there are lessons and reminders to be taken away from this so as to avoid repeating it in the first place.
    As for a Christmas card,
you can do a Christmas carol/snow/stars video while you decide what else to do.
Most of us would be happy with that.
    Peace on Earth,
    Goodwill towards Men...
    😇

Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in cold waters, your are totally right. Taking a 75 year old father into the deep Alaskan wilderness, probably not a good idea either. Do I have any regrets? No way! My dad will pass onto the next world soon enough, but the story he has now I l was the best cure for all his health problems. He lost 40 lbs for this trip, balanced out his BP, and was able to walk a mile, just getting ready for this trip. So yes, we always take chances in life but I'm blessed my Oops turned out with a happy ending. My son and my dad bonded dearly through this trip. Thank you for your comment.

I make Christmas cards for sale and to cheers others for the holidays could possibly help with design and making them. Postage however is gone up to .58 cents per Card. In the us. 🤷‍♀️ nothing like a handmade shared card. I keep most of mine I receive.

Why don’t you do a live chat session and people can do donations on there, I am sure we would all love a hand written message from you but it’s not practical. But we probably love to chat to you some time. 😃

Why do people put themselves into these situations? 75 and out in cold rough water?

He is 75 so he is not allowed to make his own decisions and live his life as he wishes? You want him locked up in a home with others deciding for him how to live his life. Playing cards and aging faster.
Funny how kids decide they know what the right thimg for the older generation is.

@1:35 "According to Alex, nothing can prepare you for watching your 75 year old father fall into a freezing Alaskan river."
umm, maybe just maybe highly dissuade your father from doing such dangerous activities anymore because he is simply too old, and unfit for such ?!?!?!?
knowing your limits as it pertains to age, health condition, fitness, and experience, and making the correct decisions is called wisdom. obviously, this family lacked that.

Who pays for the US military helo when something goes wrong? The reason I'm asking, people who are doing very high risk activities are bound to get into trouble. I'm not sure of the hourly operating cost, but I would guess it is at least 5K per hour. I think it's great to do these adventures, but saddling the public tax payer for rescue seems a little unfair. I know private air ambulances charge quite a bit, when we travel we buy air ambulance transport insurance to get back to the States if there is a medical emergency. I never mentioned the risk to the crews who fly out to rescue people.

Thay shouldn't have taken old pops out there in the first place unless pops had a big life insurance policy on him which i take it he did because why would one take a old geezer any place unless to a rest home and see them once in a while to make sure thay keep paying on the policy.

These comments lol just because you are 75 doesn't mean that you can't take care of yourself or that you are physically unfit/frail lol
