Hi there! John and Tracey Cerul here, m/v Pairadice. John Kretschmer is my cousin. He taught me to sail on Lake Sinclair (Michigan) when we were 16 years old. I am one of his biggest fans! I was kinda down today, feeling isolated due to the virus. We recently returned to Las Vegas after spending 260 days cruising from Portland, OR to the Sea of Cortez. We barely got across the MX border in time. I can’t emphasize enough how delightful and rewarding watching this video was! Made our day.... waiting for part two! Happy Easter, All the Best (or as JRK would say, “Fair Winds”) Tracey
Wow sounds like you’ve had a fantastic sailing adventure! Good to hear you returned safely 🙂 I’m pretty sure that everyone is having an off day here and there (us included!) so I’m glad we managed to put a smile on your face 😊 thanks for watching!
Wow, very small world...to hear that John Kretschmer had been in Michigan and more specifically showing family the ropes on Lake St. Clair. I live 25 minutes from Lake St. Clair, have fished it many times, our son is a multi-year volunteer Watchstander with the Coast Guard several years at St Clair station, now on Belle Isle station in the Detroit River. No volunteer access to Coast Guard now due to Covid. My daughter's Director at work lives on & sails Lake St Clair currently. Adam & Khiara you are an incredible couple and have elevated the art of cruising and showing us all the joys & trials!!
I'm not a sailor, but I enjoyed this interview a lot. What a wise and humble person. A philosopher as well as a psychologist. So much to learn from people like him.
What a legend! I'm a former student of Tadji's, found your channel through her recommendation. Used to hear stories of my teacher's husband being a sailor, never really thought much of it in middle school. Now I can't stop watching others sailing adventures on TH-cam and wish I had asked her more about it when I was younger. Love your channel!
One of the reasons I love this episode is that pilot berth you are sitting in front of was my home for ten days. I think when I found John in St. Thomas and he assigned me a berth, he looked at me and said, "You look pretty agile, how about you take this pilot berth." His safety briefing is a great model to follow, especially in terms of assigning tasks in the case of the need to abandon ship. I was assigned the task of following John around and doing what he needed to have done. I've never been sure of how I should interpret that. John really is a fabulous captain and his trips are worth every penny. I also wanted to say how impressed I am at your interview skills, Adam. That was as professional an interview as I think I've ever seen. Great, great job.
That was the most engaging conversation I have heard in the sailing shows I watch the man (John) is has a very calming influence about him and very knowledgeable no wonder he gets the best out of people. I wish I could be just half as calming as he Thanks guys cannot wait foe part 2
Nothing short of OUTSTANDING! Highest respect to you for the way you conducted yourself. I look forward to the follow on part two of the discussion with John! Being a retired US Navy sailor, I want to say how much I appreciated your statement of the Captains job is the crew and the crews job is the boat. Fair winds my friend!
Very well done. One of the best guests you could book. Listening a second time. If you continue, ensure you duplicate on Spotify, Sticher, etc. You'll give Andy Schell a run for his money. Actually, the marketplace is big enough for both of you. We need more of this! Less babies, bars, and babes. More interviews please!
Great interview and great questions :-) He "John" brought back memories... In 2007 I was crushed by a 2500 lb. steel I-beam. I suffered a broken back, 5 broken ribs and a lot of internal damage and bleeding (muscles, etc.) While it was happening, I had visions of being Cut in Half... "Relax" was the word of the day... I had to direct traffic as everyone around me was freaking out and running in circles... I realized that the only way I would survive was to tell people what to do and how to do it. My supervisor came by and was clearly distraught. I looked at him and said, "I think I'll take the rest of the day off." His laughter settled everyone down... Lesson: When everyone is freaking out, make them laugh... To think straight, in any difficult situation, the mind needs to be Relaxed... Period. I'm sure John would agree... :-)
I put this on while working on laundry, and immediately got sucked into the stories and advice. This was one of the better interviews that I have listen to. The questions provided a great storyline for John to tell his amazing life story. Thank you so much for sharing this! I can't wait for part 2 :) Stay Safe and Stay (mostly) Sane.
Not normally what I look for, but I enjoyed listening to the entire episode. I appreciate Mr. Kretschmer imparting some of his knowledge, wisdom, and philosophy during this interview. Wish I was as well spoken as Mr. Kretschmer.
My wife gave me Sailing a Serious Ocean when we bought our first family sailboat in 2013. It was on the advice of a co-worker who neither sailed nor had aspirations of sailing but loved the book. I then devoured all the rest of the Kretschmer corpus, except Cape Horn which we just got on audio book. The few video fragments of John I found online didn't match the person and voice in the books. But your interview did!!! Thank John again for doing this and thank you for being your thoughtful self and letting that shine through in the interview questions. I hope social isolation has you on the hook in a beautiful bay with nothing to do but edit this content up for us and dream about your next interview. And thanks for the honesty of all your content -- now I'll have to consider patronage I guess...
I loved this. As a Yacht Master Offshore guy, I prefer wet socks to bits of paper. The major red flag to me, is meeting someone who thinks they have more to teach than learn. They had to teach me to sail again when I did my level 3 RYA dinghy course. I learnt so much. Thank you for interviewing this guy. He says exactly what I feel, although he's doing it from an experienced perspective.
That was a great interview. I've read four of John's books and his philosophy on life and sailing are so grounding. He's the guy you want to have beers with and pick his brain. Can't wait for part II. Well done Adam, having him as a friend and mentor should be cherished.
WOW! Adam you have amazed me, l have enjoyed watching you and Khiara for some time now, but this interview kept me listening so closely to you and your guest. I must purchase his book as soon as l get a chance, This conversation between you and John was absolutely the best, looking forward to part two. Great job.
Hello from an 89 yr old in Winnipeg. A most fascinating interview and I look forward to Part 2. A childrens author got me started during WW II in the 1940s. I went on from there in Vancouver. I enjoy your channel too.. I miss the sea and your experiences are a great remembrance aud. Keep 'em coming!
Adam... wonderfully done, a wonderful life moment. The mutual admiration between the two of you is very apparent. The “discourse” is truly exceptional. He is obviously a very intelligent and experienced person, but your questions were equally well-thought and built the captivating discussion that unfolded. Thank you for preserving the legacy of this man in such a special way.
I have to agree with most the comment riders on here. You two were absolutely amazing. I faded off a couple times, but the fault was my attention span trying to get the best of me. When I found this slight irritation happening, I quickly realized that this is no ordinary interview, and was drawn into your chat like it was the best talk I have heard in years. John skill is tuned better than most. What a lucky man you are to have him as a close friend to you.
I will sail with this skipper every day and twice on Sunday. He touched on something that Jared my memory. I once read something, I don't remember who wrote this. But he said " 5 years from now , you will be at exactly the same place, doing exactly the same thing , except for the books you read and the people you meet". When you read a book , you become smarter or I should say more knowledgeable . And when you meet great people you become a better person. I am so grateful for watching this video. It has moved me . Thank you skipper. Petty officer 2nd class US NAVY.
Great conversation. Kretschmer has long been one of my sailing idols. I have paid admission fees to boat shows just to hear him speak. I am very jealous that you get to sit down with him and absorb his knowledge. He and the Shards might be some of the most inspirational sailors that you could ever want to know. Thank you for posting this!
Your interrogation style made it easier for him to share the internal nuts and bolts of his recognition of whats truly important in life. The main reason we are here on earth is to learn spiritually. He has mastered sailing and has applied that to his life in a loving, patient, humerus down to the sea practical way. More interrogations Please !!!! with giggling under the umbrella on the fore deck of life !!!
What a treat - what an amazing guy. There are two types of people in the world! 1.The person who introduces me to them - and their ego and opinions - the person caught up in their own self importance and 2. The person who introduces me to the world with all its joy - concepts - adventure and possibilities . John is the latter and he taught me about the great risk.... love it....
Part of John's gift, I think, is that he's really good about communicating two specific things: how to sail, and why to sail. Thanks for sitting him down in front of a camera and getting him talking about his two best subjects.
Great interview Adam. Thank you. I think one of the best things you did here, is listen to John. You made the interview about him, not you. I hope you get millions of views. All the best to you
Never left a comment before anywhere, but that was really really good. Stumbled on you guys About episode 8. What I like about the channel is the mixture of you both obviously enjoying what you do, but the great insights that you occasionally drop. When I have spent 2days trying to remove a rusted bolt in a deep bilge with no room and slightly bodgy tools, and I watch you guys, there is a level of empathy that develops. PS I went and bought a gear puller from total tools after watching Adam with the prop. All the best from oz, take care.
Haha love that we’re not the only ones cursing in our deep bilge after dropping yet another tool down there! As much as we hate doing the grotty boat jobs, when boat owners get together it’s mostly what we seem to talk about... everyone seems to know what you’re going through!
I’ve recently invested time in not only watching your videos but, listening equally. This episode, by far, is your best. I’m 73 now and feel as I’ve “missed the boat”. I loved John’s comment about crushing someone’s dream; I’ve Had to grieve over two dreams in my life and now .... I think you probably understand. Keep up the excellent work on the documenting of your lives. More of this genre would be very much appreciated. Fair winds and following seas!
Great work Adam, nice questions and interview. As a ginger beer I'm naturally attracted to the techy bits, but as a hubby, dad, captain John gave Gold on leadership and the human side of sailing.
Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! John K is one of my FAVORITE sailing authors, so "THANK you" to you and John for doing this interview. It's great to hear him speak from the heart and share with you regarding the very well-orchestrated topics (kudos, Adam). Terrific discussion and discourse. Perhaps a Tadji/Khiara sequel? ;-) Can't wait for Part 2!
John is a hero of ours. He actually had kind words to say about the seaworthiness of our production boat, against a sea of pundits who said our keel would fall off and that we would surely die before leaving the harbor. We have thousands of miles under the keel, now, but John’s vote of confidence rounded us up and into the wind. Great interview, Adam.
Wow! What a great seaman. Thank you for sharing this conversation. Much to learn from him and a pleasure to know a pint of his knowledge. Saludos , suerte.
I lived on and sailed my own sailboat for months prior to taking two ASA beginner courses. It helped with two things being a complete novice prior to buying my boat: I learned to dock quite well, without a motor and I learned how the boat worked, and the simple mechanics of sailing which just articulated what is done in a simple to understand manner. It also helped me understand how a boat rights itself, etc. After that, I never looked back. The classes were helpful and a good jumping off point. I was always glad to have taken them. So, I guess they just clarified simple, but at the time, muddled concepts and procedures.
JK is the real deal. I’ve read all of his books and did a passage with him several years ago. It’s tough to get a spot on one his passages as they sell out so quickly, but it was an awesome experience for me. I would suggest anybody that has any interest in near-shore or offshore sailing, or who just wants an adventure, book onto one of his passages.
I really enjoyed this too. It’s fascinating to learn about the nuts and bolts that go on between the ears of such a sailing luminary. Looking forward for the second part. Two thumbs up for more interviews.
This is by far my favorite of all your videos. Your vid's are decent, by the way. I just majorly geek out listening to sages. You are one lucky guy to know this man. Honestly, I could learn from him all day. Love his non-authoritarian style. Love his insights and that he is well read. Love that he took off to live on his boat, which I am about to do--after the pandemic ends. Taking my 22 from Nebraska to somewhere south to start out. From there, I'll figure out the rest. My months aboard a tall ship in Vanuatu changed a lot and solidified the rest of my lifelong dreams. I so get it.
Questions were really good and you did great job listening to his answers and transitioning to relevant follow-up questions that moved the conversation forward. Well done.
Thanks to both of you for that excellent interview! I hope you will pursue more of these informative talks. Now I have to get on Amazon and add John to my sailing library!
An absolutely fascinating & absorbing discussion by two great gentlemen. Adam, you are well on your way to follow in John's footsteps. Can't wait for Part 2!
Please do interrogate more sailors. I thoroughly enjoyed both parts of your conversation with Kretschmer. I was totally engaged and smiling throughout. Super interesting. Thanks!!
Wow. Very entertaining, informative, educational and thought provoking. I usually have a hard time sitting through a video like this but not today. Enjoyed every second. Thank you Falcon crew for posting this. Looking forward to part 2. :)
Wow, I did not think that it would be so illuminating. If I could ever afford to be in his crew I would jump to it in a heartbeat. Most surprising thing to me, as I can't do it, was the coolness under pressure with crew. That is a dark art! Cant wait for episode 2. 5 stars. André in Sydney

I don't often leave a comment, but John seems like a legend and this is gold.
That was one of the greatest interviews about sailing I have ever watched. Can't wait to watch the second part
More, more more!
Fantastic video, there's not many videos that can hold my attention for 47 minutes.
Excellent. Thank you. We look forward to Part 2.
You need to do more of this, your interview technique was first rate. Thoroughly enjoyable, thank you.
This is the real deal life experience, thank you.
Yes

I want to sail with John...

Thanks for interviewing him. I read Cape Horn to Starboard and Flirting with Mermaids and highly enjoyed them.
Mate, that was great, thank you.
John is a very interesting interview subject, but blown away by your interviewing skills! Looking forward to part 2.

Excellent discussion and a reminder that you don’t need to be on a boat to share your power with others.
This is one of my favorite sailing videos ever, a great experience just to watch and listen to John. Outstanding.
Looking forward to the next one.

THANK YOU !!!

Great interview, well done. It was great to see the Kaufman 47 down below and differences between our Lazy Lightning II.
All I can say is What A Legend!
I will sail with this skipper every day and twice on Sunday.

The master and the apprentice, beautiful to watch. I sense a special bond happening there. Excellent work Adam, loking forward to part 2.👍
Awesome interview, can’t wait for part 2!
Incredable interview. Thank you very much.
such a great interview for both of you, I really enjoyed it. thanks such much to both of you.
James
Brilliant..... great interview. John is amazing. I'm looking forward to part 2.
I really enjoyed it, looking forward to the next session. Cheers Rustie.
Awesome discussion. Kudos to YOU for engaging and befriending this Legend of the High Seas!
Xoxo awesome! Honestly my wife and I watched very good! A+
Great interview Adam. Thank you. I think one of the best things you did here, is listen to John. You made the interview about him, not you.
I hope you get millions of views. All the best to you
I really enjoyed this. I had never heard of John. Looking forward to part 2 and I hope they beers kept flowing well into the night!
I loved John’s comment about crushing someone’s dream; I’ve
Had to grieve over two dreams in my life and now .... I think you probably understand.
Keep up the excellent work on the documenting of your lives.
More of this genre would be very much appreciated.
Fair winds and following seas!
Thumbs Up!
Great work Adam, nice questions and interview. As a ginger beer I'm naturally attracted to the techy bits, but as a hubby, dad, captain John gave Gold on leadership and the human side of sailing.
I could listen to him all day
great interview, sailing to the edge of time is a beautiful book, one of my favourite writers
That was the best interview I've seen in awhile. Looking forward to the rest of it next week.
This is fantastic. Great topics and I am really learning about how to be a better captain.
I do believe Adam, this is your finest video. Certainly, your finest moment in all the video's I seen of you two. John is a character...
Thanks so much! That was awesome!
Thank you. Please sir, can.we have some more?
JK is the real deal. I’ve read all of his books and did a passage with him several years ago. It’s tough to get a spot on one his passages as they sell out so quickly, but it was an awesome experience for me. I would suggest anybody that has any interest in near-shore or offshore sailing, or who just wants an adventure, book onto one of his passages.
Great Job Adam. Love these types of videos.
Incredible. Thanks for the interview.
Yes, I enjoyed the conversation with John. It made me think a lot about a lot of things, and I’m looking forward to seeing the second half.
awesome interview looking forward to the rest of it thank you
Sensational Adam, please do more of this. Hope your safe and well, much love from Brisbane Australia
I really enjoyed this too. It’s fascinating to learn about the nuts and bolts that go on between the ears of such a sailing luminary. Looking forward for the second part. Two thumbs up for more interviews.
Very good interview.
This is by far my favorite of all your videos. Your vid's are decent, by the way. I just majorly geek out listening to sages. You are one lucky guy to know this man. Yep, great content, passion, experience and helpful perspective.
Very well done.
Well done and very enjoyable. Yes, more is better in this case. Thank you and God Bless.
Questions were really good and you did great job listening to his answers and transitioning to relevant follow-up questions that moved the conversation forward. Well done.
What a fantastic interview and what a lovely guy John is . Adam, besides sailing, this must be your new career ! Thoroughly enjoyed this.
I clearly need to expand my sailing library. Fantastic episode! Can't wait for part 2!
Thanks to both of you for that excellent interview! I hope you will pursue more of these informative talks. Now I have to get on Amazon and add John to my sailing library!
Mr. John Kretschmer, what a legend, hanging on his ever word! And thank you so much for the interview Adam, you yre really good at it, a pro Pal.
An absolutely fascinating & absorbing discussion by two great gentlemen. Adam, you are well on your way to follow in John's footsteps. Can't wait for Part 2!
Brilliant interview. Thanks a lot for that.
Please do interrogate more sailors. I thoroughly enjoyed both parts of your conversation with Kretschmer. I was totally engaged and smiling throughout. Super interesting. Thanks!!
This was absolutely delightful, thank you all so much. As for wether you should pursue this line of content further, yes please 🙏🏼
Such an inspiring interview. Thank you!
Well done I found it very interesting and he seems so down to earth and very easy to listen too!
Love the content in the interview found it great to put headphones in and just listen to the story
Stumbled across "Serious Ocean" a few years ago and have since read all his work. Fantastic interview and I look forward to the second half.
Ditto!
Brilliant interview
