    In my job, having done the exact same jobs with the same settings using both my old and new welder, I've found that having a watercooled unit makes a difference to the cleanliness of the puddle like you have here. Having tested and double checked every last possibility the only conclusion I can come up with was not a leak but simply hot gas. With the cooled hose and torch your gas is almost chilled as it comes up to the lens, with an air cooled unit (especially with the better thermal transfer of partial He in the mix) I find that it is always just that fraction less clean. I can't, or wont, say this is definitively the reason but it's the only one I can come up with as everything else was identical on very similar welds (Al 5053 15mm flange to 3mm wall tubing with 6053 rod). Perhaps you can look into this as your experience is way beyond mine, this is just what I found during testing why my welds were different.

    Hi Jody
    Well you mentioned the tig finger..
    Well I would like to mention the tig finger
    Today I was welding T6061 .062 to .125 in hard to reach places - I have had your tig fingers for several year and it seems that I would like to encourage everyone to have at LEAST 2 or 3 because I have had to use then on the torch hand as well as the feeder hand while doing different holding ways of the being welding item - when small and solid a lot of heat make's it very difficult to do.
    Thanks Again
    Awful Arthur

    Your Tig finger is also lighter and easier to transport on jobs as well as consuming less real estate than a traditional finger prop method, even an old welding glove. 👍. Thanks for the video Jodi.

      +nickolaguez Tig fingers are great! They are good for mig welding too when fingers need to be close to the weld etc. I have a set for both my everlast tig welder and mig welder. I even marked them to make sure I keep them at their correct stations.

    Thank you for all the hard work you put in Jodie. I've recently crossed that bridge from spending money on welding equipment to earning money using the equipment. All thanks to you, my hobby now earns me hard cash. I really appreciate your instructional video, it's my knowledge library. Best regards and thanks. Chris, Sheffield, England.
    If you haven't yet bought a tig finger guys, you need to get one from Jodie, things go a lot smoother and look better.

    I have two of those CK 360° torches, one air cooled the other water cooled (both 2 series), and they both make high pitch noises, sounding like argon is turned up to high. I love the flexibility they give on welding out of position, but the noise is enough to give me a headache. I will have to weld some aluminum with them to see if I have similar issues as you did. I normally just use a CK 2 series normal torch to do aluminum and haven't had any issues.

    I dare say I have the same problem running those pink gas lense plus it's a smaller hole I push my tungsten for better gas and it stops the oxidation .

      +BeyondTheRedLine Hell yeah! And, how does the 280 perform with that intake? It looks like a high HP setup, so I'm guessing this is something for the track only. It certainly wouldn't fit under the hood.

    Hello Jody,
    Great videos. Do you have any experience with aluminum mig welding? An example would be the process available via Lincoln Electric 350mp, which can do pulsed spray, and handle thin wire with a push-pull gun... My question would be... "when would you use mig versus tig in aluminum, eg could you have used mig for your manifold and have it come out as good as using tig? Thanks again...

    Jody, I am a little confused as to the electrode tip configuration you are using on part of your video. It appears that you might be using a shaped ground point electrode with a ball on the end of it. Are my eyes deceiving me or is it just a balled electrode? Buy the way buddy, in case you don't know this---You are the "Jedi Knight" of welding!

It would be cool if you made a video about gas welding and tips about it.. Only if you have a setup in your shop though. Im learning it in welding school and would like your info .

    Whats up boss, I have a question. I"m 17 and do a lot of welding in my spare time. I've been a 3 year welder for my school but wasn't able to take it for my final year. I have always wanted to learn to tig weld and was wondering if you had any suggestions. I wan't an all around tig that I can weld mild steel, aluminum, and stainless eventually. I was looking at the diversion 180, however it's a little steep, but has all the functions I believe I will need. Really just wanting to see if I've missed any machines. I have done alot of research and am worried about purchasing a lower tier machine that won't last me. I work a summer job and am not allowed to have a school year job, yet I will save up for the machine that I wan't even if it takes me awhile. My maximum price range is probably around 2200 for everything due to me being quite young and not having all that much funds, especially with college closely approaching.
    P.S. I have watched almost every video for as far back as 2 years and will continue to watch all of them!! I feel that I have learned alot and can't wait to watch the new video every week. Thank you for the hard work and awesome videos.

    If you think your rig is leaking gas and want to find out for sure, remove the tungsten, Then put your thumb tight on the cup opening and bump the pedal. Watch the ball in the flow meter. it should go up and slowly fall to the bottom if there is no leak. if there is a leak, the ball will stay up somewhat depending on the severity of the leak.

    If you cover the 'Acetone' on the acetone bottle with box tape it lasts a lot longer, and not wash off so easily from acetone drips. The tape will start to look gnarly after a while, but it's pretty easy to clean and re-label when needed.

    8:37 I used that same trick when I was tacking together a SS pipe and flange (on the outside). The flange was sucking all the heat away so I was jamming in filler and then came over it with a second torch-only pass to achieve a much better looking weld (probably with better fusion too, since the whole assembly was then "preheated" from the first pass).

      +David Cashin be willing to bet it's in the swivel. anytime you have a non-solid path for a gas, the risk to leak is exponentially increased. and helium is a devil at finding microscopicleaks, that's what makes it a perfect test medium for HVAC circuits

    Hi mate. every time I see you working with the TIG machine I would like to get my machine in an operational condition. I have a Italian machine that I repaired after I bought it at a scrap dealer for about $5. It's got most of the things you need, but I don't know what to order to complete the machine. I would like to order it from you but I don't even know what kind of torch I have. So the machine is just sitting there doing nothing. It's a nice little thing though.

    Could you cover that cold weld technique a little more? Like how do you do it.

    • @nautamaran
      @nautamaran 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jody's got another video somewhere... basic idea is to start colder so you avoid melt back, get the parts joined, and provide a heat bridge, then come back with a bit more heat and lay a neat line of ripples. The second pass can use a higher freq too if you're worried about ending with too wide a bead.

  • @Wannabe_Maker
    @Wannabe_Maker 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would a 75/25 mix do to stainless and mild steel?

    • @nautamaran
      @nautamaran 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chemically? Nothing. Helium ionizes at a higher temp, so you get more heat per amp. This also concentrates that heat, which compliments the focusing effect of higher frequencies. This all helps win the battle with aluminum's high heat conduction and low specific heat, so you can complete the weld before a part saturates with heat. Stainless doesn't conduct heat away from the puddle as fast, so you don't NEED the intensity provided by helium, but it would help your travel speed and narrow the heat affected zone. Likely not worth the extra cost though?
