    I visited Henry Hagg Lake in northeast Oregon for a morning of trout fishing and to visit one of my old research sites from graduate school. This lake is one of the most popular trout fisheries in close proximity to Portland, Oregon. The prairies surrounding the lake are also home to one of the few remaining populations of the federally endangered Fender's Blue Butterfly.
    I found good numbers of trout feeding in the top 15' of the water column and they were eager to hit small crankbaits and plugs.

    We lived in Hillsboro for almost 20 years and loved this lake! We used to trout fish here out of our kayaks and loved it. 💕 We never had any fish jump in 🤪

    Nice video. Thanks for sharing. There are too many fast boats in this lake and most of boat men don't slow down in the no quake zone.

    Neat to learn about the butterfly! We just moved about 45 mins from Hagg and I work in wildlife but I hadn't heard about them yet. Thanks for sharing 👍

    I went to Hagg Lake when I was 19 almost 28 years ago. My brother had relocated from Los Angeles to Aloha due to the bank he worked for moving to Portland. I caught my first freshwater perch there. I didn’t even know they existed.

    Those crankbait and plug bites are pretty aggressive and fun. I've flat lining the small size 70 hot shots over here on the west side and the little stockers we get to mess with just hammer them. I will say also I don't know if I have found a better trolling setup than a dodger and hoochie..... As soon as you put that on I knew that would get some fish 🐟

    I always had a suspicion you were a bio nerd too! A basic education of limnology, flow regimes, and riparian ecology has completely changed the way I think about fish. I read water like most people read through Instagram feeds LOL.

    Fantastic video again! I loved the information/segment about the butterflies. Really interesting and I learned a ton. I did not know that Hagg had such a special habitat on its shores.
    I also have to say that you picked a good day to hit Hagg. I saw on ifish that they stocked it yesterday (17th) with a number of larger trout (mixed in with normal stockers).

    Hey Tyler
    I noticed that the last couple of videos you have posted have been in the Salty. I am really hoping that you will do a full review in the future. I like the simplicity of the boat and you are doing a fantastic job illustrating that it is versatile as well.

    Awesome to hear about this cool species and your involvement in the conservation efforts! My graduate background is in ecology and restoration as well and it’s cool that you sprinkle in your knowledge throughout your videos. Learn something every time! Lots of questions though! As far as trolling speed, why not use a small 360 flasher to better match the higher speed for the plugs on your other rod?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've not had great success with small 360 flashers. Usually in these situations I would reach for the small skateboard dodgers but I didn't have any on hand.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Originally was more of a bird guy but realized quickly that butterflies are a better measure of ecosystem health as they respond quicker to changes in the plant community

    Do you have a video of the entire dodger setup?ive learned a a lot watching your videos and went out with dodgers for the first time last weekend. How do you rig your weights to get them deeper and how far above the dodger on the line. You videos are my favorite. So much info.

    So, what's your degrees? Mine are Water Science (Freshwater Ecology/Environmental Science mix) and Zoology for my undergrad (double major) and Molecular Fish Systematics for my MS. I should have stopped with the undergrad because I was unable to find a position once I got my masters and ended up returning to my trade for a living (drywall and painting).

    Preserve the Fenders Blue Butterfly, smoke the Kokanee. Life is a dichotomy. Fleeting, lasting a season. Have eyes as wide as a Fenders. Burrow into the blue deep for the red meat.
