    Nice! I've tried this project a few years ago. For anyone reading...the hardest part of it is actually trying to keep the thing in place. I used TONS of silicon and rock to keep it from wanting to float to the top. And he is right....do ton of water changes. This project is not for the impatient.

    I use this method for backgrounds in terrariums and aquariums. I have noticed that adding vinegar for the first few water changes really speeds up the process. Acetic Acid (vinegar) neutralizes the alkalinity in the cement. Give it a try if you can get a good price on it. As for ratios I am not sure exactly. I usually just dump a whole bunch in there and leave it for a week, then do changes every few days adding less and less vinegar. do a few final water changes with no vinegar and usually its good to go.

      Dion de kok after you did that does the ph rise again anymore after

    • @aidantb8
      @aidantb8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcus Patterson I wouldn’t think it does. once the vinegar neutralizes the ph, it should stay down unless another problem comes up not related to the cement

    awwww you have uarus! I had a wonderful pair that I raised from babies--they were in a 100-gallon stock tank pond in my Berkeley apartment, with a slate waterfall and a variety of other South American fish--tetras, hatchetfish, pencilfish, catfish, etc. The emperor tetras even spawned and raised babies in there. The uarus would eat shrimp from my hand and you could stroke them. They are very under-appreciated cichlids!

    I do a lot of crafting with styrofoam including scenery and landscaping for tabletop games. You should try using a little pen torch or butane lighter to sculpt the foam. For rocks and the such it quickly and easily makes pretty natural and irregular shapes. Just be sure to work outdoors or in a well ventilated area

    I used to make shale backgrounds. Expensive and heavy. This is cheaper, lighter, and allows for greater creativity. Btw, you can create stalactites by placing a dab of aquarium sealant from a tube on an overhanging rock and quickly pulling downwards. After drying, a touch of paint makes it look more authentic.

    I seem to appreciate this method over the other in a different video you made which involves using expanding foam from a can to the same piece of styrofoam however, I am somewhat sceptical of using hydraulic cement that gives the finished look of actual rock...
    The look is incredibly real looking but the type of hydraulic cement used is what I question.. Could you please explain what brand name you use - Thanks!

    I know this is an old video, but it's what I used to build my background. Your video's are awesome, and I also love your book! However, I was just wondering how you remove a custom concrete background, from your tank with a plastic lip, after silicone it in place. I've searched TH-cam. There are a lot of videos on how to make a background not a one on how to remove it after you've installed it.

    SOOO Informative! Good questions below for you--a few I have as well (Not answered quite yet)..... Do you have difficulty with algae growth on the BG? If so, how do you recommend getting rid of it? Also, what brand of silicone are you using? Do you have difficulty with it coming apart later? Does the cement discolor over time? Does it add weight to the overall aquarium? OK OK>.thats enough for now . I ADORE YOUR VIDEOS! Simple, straightforward, and so very well done!! Thank you again for all of your time, energy and info...keep em comin!

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stacy Medina Thanks Stacey. Algae will grow on mostly anything, including a background like this. However, as algae does grow on it, it adds to the look i find. Making it look more natural. If you don't like it, you can lightly scrub it off with something like an old tooth brush or the like. I use GE silicone I(window and door) for the most part as it is what you guys will be most likely to be able to find. As with any decoration in a tank, it can discolour. More so darkens with algae, bacteria, detritus, etc. Again, i find they only look better with age. These are not that heavy at all, even the largest background would only weigh a few pounds. The largest I have ever built weighed 15-20 pounds, but that was over 6 feet long. The weight isn't something to be concerned about.
      Once installed, it is essentially permanent. To get it out is difficult. You will destroy it in most cases. Small ones can come out in one piece. Once in.. they are in there good!

    I have always wondered about the backgrounds people made. I am curious about the styrofoam though, does it start to break down in the water? If so, how long does it last before being a concern or having to replace it? I assume you can apply this method to make any type of structure in a freshwater tank.

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It wont break down in our life time... Google it... Styrofoam takes 1+ million years to decompose. I have used this method to build a bunch of things. From backgrounds, to rocks, to filter covers.

    QUESTION: Is there a way to fill in gaps/holes behind the aquarium background, without drying it and taking the fish out? Is there a substance or material that I can use? My fry somehow tend to squeze through some unknown hole at the side of aquarium, where the background ends, and end up behind the background, or end up in a build in filter chamber, or even worse, somewhere in between. Its literally a 1x1x40 cm tube-cavity in the aquarium corner, that stretches from top to the bottom of the aquarium.

    Another way to carve foam that I learned from set builders is to use a small angle grinder or drill with a wire wheel on it.

    Hey Joey. I watched a video you did back in 2011 when you were promoting a manufactured background opposed to doing a DIY. One thing you said was that the DIY backgrounds did not have much of a life expectancy. You said that they start to fall apart in a few months time. What is you thought on this now? Has it changed? Thanks. Enjoy your vids, fellow Canadian from the West Coast.

    • @thekingofdiy

      +lebon40 It really just comes down to how well made the background is. Making the cement thicker helps a lot but also coating it in a clear epoxy can make it all but bullet proof.

    Doesn't the Quickcrete result in an alkaline ph? Or would you just focus on fish like Af Cichlids? Also, would you say that Quikrete Liquid Color Pigments would be ok to use to add some color shading?

    How hard is it to remove a large background like that once it is siliconed in place? I don't foresee having to do it anytime soon, but it would be nice to know that I'm not going to be stuck with it forever.

      @thekingofdiy  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once it is siliconed in place and cured its not difficult to remove, but you will almost always destroy the background. However, once removed the tank is unharmed. Generally you have to remove it in chunks. Its not a big deal but does take some time.

    How will these custom backgrounds hold up in the long run? Will they crumble over time?

    Yo love the videos man had a quick question, so after I cover all my foam with the concrete mix do I leave the back with just foam then silicone it to the tank and run a bead around all the edges ?? So it seals

    After my first coat of thin cement, I noticed it was very powdery. Does continue through the other layers?

    You said you can seal it with a two part epoxy. What epoxy would be safe for the animals????

    • @aidantb8

      Only four years later, but pretty much any epoxy is going to be non toxic after it’s done curing

    The video says to secure the whole structure with cement... but in the video, there wasnt cement on the backside... or does the silicone take care of that?
