It's funny seeing Neumorphism coming back around. I was messing around with neumorphic styles in UI elements on really, really early websites I was experimenting with (1994-1996-ish...yay Geocities LOL).

@@CreativeDirectorExplains It was a lot more freeing and fun in the early days because there were no rules, really. We were just making it up as we went along and REALY pushing the boundaries. Yeah, there were a lot of train wrecks, design-wise...but there was a LOT of really groundbreaking stuff we did that carried through.

I think designers need to concentrate on the last item way more than anything else. Accessibility. As someone who has worked on books for senior citizens in the past, I’ve noticed design elements becoming worse over the years for seniors. Some of these other trends are at odds with designing for seniors: neumorphism and dark mode. Both are difficult for seniors to read text and elements on. I’ve also noticed designs using small type, or type that is light gray on white. Fortunately, there are tools for web design that help you identify issues like this, but for printed materials there aren’t - other than having an art director that is conscious about them.

You hit the nail on the head - I'm an older designer, who still loves to hold a magazine in his hands - it's tough to read white text on a pastel color! I love using 'light' fonts - guess what, they don't print too well, especially when the color is 70% blk on anything! Just m5cs!

Your final point about the collective responsibility to create accessibility across all things will be a challenge / opportunity for several of the trends you suggest will be front foot in 2025. Dark mode as an example is a challenge as its entire theme is “evolving/rising/blending out of darkness (50% plus grayscale to black?), creating contrast there seems so elusive. Anaglyphs when not done well, can trigger nausea and other irritation issues in some people when the effect moves too fast (feels more like a speed ramp). My larger point is that accessibility is indeed an opportunity for creatives to think about the unspoken part of accessibility which is to not be a turn off to the few while appealing to the wider bandwidth of your audience. I suppose it’s always the trade off in design. Let’s aim to be thoughtful about our exciting brilliant ideas in 2025.

I dont know why most of the graphic design trends videos are talking about the trends that are happening in "just one element" of design. I believe that if we are talking about graphic design trends, that needs to be more holistic which includes type-arrangements, layout narratives, use of shapes etc. No one wants to know about aurora, gradients etc-- these are trends in elemental visuals perhaps but nowhere close to covering graphic design! We should talk about why people are using mono-typefaces, why are they breaking symmetry etc while pairing with these visuals. Or else we will keep building a generation who creates a bento grid with comic sans!

Everything’s already been done. And the things that look the coolest take a very long time to do. That’s why Disney doesn’t make hand drawn cel-animated films anymore, unfortunately. The only graphic designer I know of in the past 30 years that hasn’t been a “copy and paste creative” is Dave McKean (who worked on the Sandman comic book covers back in the 90s if you don’t know who he is, but also does photography, painting, lettering, etc). You might think that you are not following what someone else has done, but do a little research and you’ll find that someone else already did it (whatever “it” is). And AI is the crux of that. AI is ONLY taking what’s already been done and using that to make other things. No thought whatsoever is going into what AI art produces.
