My first true love was the 86 model 250r. I think I was 21 when I was able to afford one used lol. I rode it a short time before disaster struck and the push rod for the clutch blew out of the crankcase. So I tore it completely down and began a complete rebuild from the ground up. Never got to finish....girlfriend got pregnant and it wasn't long before I had to sell it 😕 but there will be one in my life again. Hopefully an 86' or 87' 200sx . Thanks for sharing the video and story. Beautiful ATC you've built.
god i love trikes.. sold my 125M 6 years ago, & passed up an opportunity to buy a mint liquid cooled 250R ATC for 2k around the same time. didnt think i would need it, owning a 400EX, but im kicking myself now.. good upload.

A friend of the channel and a test writer Jim Nemechek, just picked up a very clean 82. It's undecided whether or not we are going to use it as a project machine. However, we plan on filming a stock test on it at the very least. After all, the air-cooled ATC 250R was the first production high performance ATV.

Dont mistake this man has balls and serious skill. Its not easy to roll that throttle across whoops like he is. That bike is dialed and rippin. Makes me want another one im just not sure the missed work from injury will go over too well. Smacking the ground hurts worse now than 30yrs ago im pretty sure.

Complete the build in a couple years that I'll suck, just picked one up 4 months ago and almost done with my build touched everything except the motor the bike had very low hrs when purchased bought it from original owner who had it sitting for around 2 decades once it blows going to put a ct310 kit hands down one if the the top 5 for me on the net as far as looks
アストロサンダー we worked with motor Builder CT racing on this project. They recommend the V Force Reed's with their motor builds. When you work with a motor Builder on a project you have to use the products that they recommend work best with their engine kits in order to fairly evaluate the entire package.
back in the day I owned 86 250r and it was ballsy no doubt.. But after almost killing myself on it quite a few times I traded it in and got a 250sx and rode the bike to its death up into the late 90's

Lone star racing doesn't list a swing arm for a 1985 ATC 250r only an ( $910.00) 1986 -87 TRX and 1988-89 TRX. Also, Lone star racing list an axle for 1986-89 TRX and says you could use it on an ATC 250 but 1986-89 TRX sprocket and sprocket bolts need to be used. Lone star racing doesn't list the sprocket needed. Most of their parts are for TRX

I actually built a 1986 250r engine with a ESR set up.. it had mid and high ported n polish 310 cylinder jug, swashed dome cylinder head, ESR cdi n stator kit, vforce3, pwk 39mm kenieth carb, CPI mid n high pipe and I dumped it in a 2001 Honda 400ex. It had all around power 1st thru 4th front wheels just want to come up lol... I don't have it no more but I do have a video racing banshee on here. If you search my channel or look up (Honda 250r rotary1975) it comes out.. Subbed n liked it..

We are getting ready to shoot a 200X and 250SX. We are scheduled to shoot a Tecate 3 this June if it pans out. We will work our way through as many old machines as we can as fast as we can.

Part 2 of the build will be featured in an article in Dirt Wheels Magazine, so we may try and time the video release around the same time as the magazine release.
Sorry to disappoint but we did indeed use our stock test machine for the project. It wasn't a showroom piece but being in good condition meant that we wouldn't have to replace every little part to have good reliability. We even used the stock crank, although we wouldn't recommend building a race motor with a 30 year old crank. Your thinking is why we worked so hard to modify the stock components rather than cobble something together using parts off some newer sport quad. If this machine were ever sold, it is still an ATV250R, not something that was hacked up to add parts that weren't designed to fit. We too appreciate those remaining perfect stockers.
If it is in good shape to start with, sure. It's not quite as fast or good handling as the 85-26 ATC250R, but today's riders aren't quite as fast as they were back in the day. Sorry, its true. That being said, we'd bet you could build a pretty competitive vintage racer out of one, especially of you already own one in good shape.

We did a part 2 on this machine where we had CT set the motor up for race gas, with more extensive porting, a carb update, and new long rod crank. HOrsepower is now in the 50HP range. i used to smoke cr -yz 250s on a track we had till the whoop section , these bikes are the most fun you can have , I've owned everything , these are the most fun ,,
Tempting, but we would be more likely to do a 350cc power valve cylinder allowing us to maintain the use of the counterbalancer. A CR500 motor would eventually crack this 30 year old frame to bits. Love that motor though!

Anyone know where to get a thumb throttle for a 1985 atc 250r? I can't seem to find any and I don't know what is compatible
Any throttle is compatible, it's just the 85-86 R throttle is more progressive
