After hearing about Mick Tinglehoff's tenure of service at center, I expected him to be among the many who suffer dementia - and that was the case. His wikipedia entry noted that he died in 2021 "from complications of Parkinson's disease and dementia." After the 4th quarter play where long-time veteran tackle Ralph Neely was down clutching his knee, I searched him on Wikipedia as well: "Neely died on January 5, 2022, at the age of 78.[9] He was living with dementia and the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) prior to his death."
Whenever they played an AFC powerhouse team like the Steelers, Raiders or Dolphins in those days, the Vikes almost always got dominated. Yet whenever they played the Cowboys -- a powerhouse team in their own right -- it was always a close game (at least when Tarkenton was at QB). Never quite understood why.

That game set Pittsburgh back to 1-4 to start season and satisfaction at the time was that Vikings thought they'd knocked Steelers out of the playoffs so early in the year (recall: 14-games and only one team included as Wild Card) Instead, Pittsburgh went on a rampage, numerous shutouts while winning every game straight through to AFC Championship loss to Madden and the Oakland Raiders. So damn tired of hearing Steeler fans all say the same thing: 'that was our best team, we only lost 'cuz Franco and Bleier were out' -blah, blah, blah. Raiders beat 'em fair and square 24-7. The Cowboys won a hard fought game against the Vikings (who had lost to the Raiders in the SB the previous season) on their way to starting the ‘77 season 8-0. They would eventually finish 12-2 & cap off the year by winning the Super Bowl. A GREAT SEASON ! 🏈

@snag66 you're right about the Thursday game. I had forgot that. The NFL used the Cowboys for things like that in those days, knowing they'd get the ratings. They were used for Detroits first MNF game in their new Silverdome in '75 (36-10). They were Philadelphia's first game in their new Veterans Stadium in '71 (42-7). In 1976, the N.Y.Giants played their first 4 games on the road, to open their new Giants Stadium against the Cowboys (24-14). Even as late as '88, the NFL used the Cowboys for special occasions. They were the 'Phoenix' Cardinals first game in Arizona, also on MNF (17-14). Even before NFL films titled them Americas team, the NFL knew they had a nationwide following, and used them for ratings and attendance draws. Anyways, that '78 Vikings game, I too remember it well. The team played lethargic. Fran Tarkenton used mainly that short dink and dunk passing that night, and melted that clock. I remember being frustrated at them keeping the clock moving with those short passes. It was almost exactly how teams use the pass now. 1977 was the lowest scoring year the NFL had since sometimes in the 1940’s. Total scoring for BOTH teams was at 34.2 points per game(The average team averaged less than 20 ppg) It was the driving force behind the 1978 rules changes. Also a factor was that in 1977 the average NFL team threw only 38% of the time. The NFL has always wanted more passing and those numbers were a cause for concern.
Start of an 8-0 run for Dallas to open the season, with stubborn Landry keeping Dorsett in the bullpen until he finally started him in Week 10 vs. Pittsburgh. Probably Landry's best team. A 4th qtr. collapse against the Cardinals in Week 9 kept this team from being 13-1. (The Steelers loss in Week 10 wasn't close.) The 'Boys rolled through the playoffs with an 87-23 aggregate, giving up fewer than 200 yds. per game. Such a dominant team, getting bounced by the Steelers so often, just tells you how great those '70s Pittsburgh teams really were.
Pittsburgh matched up well against the Boys. Roger was a much much better quarterback than Bradshaw, but the Steel curtain always took over those games
Steeler success was more than match-up advantage, no? They were just better than Dallas at almost every position. The following season, the Super Bowl might have ended 35-31, but it was a blowout until the final few minutes when Dallas got hot against a complacent Pittsburgh team that was up 35-17. Pittsburgh was just better, against a Dallas team that was awfully, even historically, good.
@@wolfwilliams The only reason that game became a blowout was because of the lucky breaks the Steelers got early in the 4th qtr. like the completely bogus pass interference call against Benny Barnes. Before that, the score was 21-17 Pitt. The same as the final score from SB X 3 years earlier.
@@wolfwilliams Jimmy Johnson's Dallas teams were the best ones. Better than the 1977 team. They played a much tougher schedule than the 1977 team did The NFC east was probably worse in 1977 than it is now and when Jimmy was coaching the boys the NFC east was the best division in football.
The 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers were a very physical team, like the Houston Oilers and Oakland Raiders were. Dallas was more of a finesse team. When those two collide, the physical team wins more of those battles. I don't think 70's Cowboys with Landry and Roger together ever beat the Steelers, Raiders, or the Oilers? Being a huge Cowboys fan, the Super Bowl losses were very painful.
In Cliff Harris' book, he and Charlie Waters thought Rashad was dead for a second but then they notice a snot bubble coming from his nose so they knew he would be OK.
Hard headed Coach Landry didn't start Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett in this game. Just like he didn't start Hall of Famer Roger Staubach in 1970 and 71 until The Cowboy Players revolted in 71 after which they went on to win the Superbowl. The Cowboys should've won the Superbowl in 70 if not for Landry's hard headedness.
Seems like those genius types usually out smart themselves more than the opponent. Super Bowl XIII Tony Dorsett was shredding the Steel Curtain. But Coach Landry only let him carry the ball 16 times for 99 yards. Yet Robert Newhouse got 8 carries for, I believe, 5yds. Those 8 carries should've been Dorsett's. Had they been Dallas might've very well ended up running away with that game in 2nd half.

I have been a Cowboys fan since 1966 I will a fan Of America’s team
37:15 - Years later that would have been ruled a safety.
TD 👍
Why can’t today’s Dallas Cowboys wear these uniforms? They look a lot better than what they are wearing.
Because this is not 1977 anymore
It's odd seeing the both teams on the same side
Preston Pearson MVP of that game so many big p l a y ES
It's fine.
No more college hockey ?
Sorry they told me no more.
Dave Kingman !! 1:16:50
