  • Greg is adding sea salt minerals to cattle mob. The minerals in our nations soils have been depleted over the centuries with unsustainable farming practices. By adding sea minerals to our drinking water we are adding these minerals back into our soils through the cow mob. Check out my books for more tips for your farm on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

Greg...we live about an hour and a half straight south of you. We drove to Texas last year to attend the same Steve Campbell conference. We also implemented the same mineral program. Don't forget they need fresh water as well as the salt brine. We get the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) from the local Mfa store (they keep it in stock) .We do not use an inticer and they still use it. We also use apple cider vinegar free choice. We cut a plastic drum in half lengthways and built a skid for it so we can pull it around on our daily moves. 130 pairs consume 5 gallon a day in the winter and about 5 gallon a week in the summer. We only had two cases of pinkeye last and the hair coats are so shiny. We are completely sold on this program after one year of trail.

We are in the process of using a 12" diameter plastic pipe, 12 feet long with the top cut out of it for our sea salt/ vinegar feeder. It will be mounted on skids for towing to each new paddock. Thanks for sharing your experience with us on using this program!

I use seawater here in Hawaii. My herd of 26 will drink 15 - 30 gallons a day. They are very shiny. Couldn't get the Free Choice Mineral company to send me a sample box of minerals to see which ones my land needed. The shipping cost would have been more than the minerals. Seawater has practically the entire periodic table of elements in solution. I have a 300 gallon tank in my boat and draw the ocean water from 30 feet down with a hose and pipe. I run out to where the ocean color is deep pacific blue. Coming up on two years of attempting to regenerate 50 acres of soil stripped chemically poisoned old sugar cane plantation land. Experiment ongoing.

But I have always fed kelp free choice. I get those babies with pinkeye started on kelp and they clear right up. New animals always binge on the kelp when they first arrive until they're caught up.

I’ve always been taught that adding salt to the only water source is an absolute no go, explained to me in the way that if they’re coming for water and they need to flush OUT salt, that by drinking the water they would not be able to remedy that problem because they’d still be adding more salt to their body. Do they have another water source other than this one or is that not a concern there?

I wanted to let you know I was able to quit losing calves to clostridium diseases and simply do not lose a cow to bloat or any respiratory disease due to using Arm & Hammer baking soda for about 15 years now. I purchase all of my winter hay and feed a 1Ib box of Arm and Hammer baking soda only in a 300 gallon water tank about once a month or twice a month in the winter/early spring only. I believe when I can smell my cows burp or toot and it don't smell good, bring on the baking soda and it just relaxes them. The cows love it and it helps them adjust to hay or rich spring pastures full of clover and they simply perform. I am in Florida, so its always hot and humid and just an FYI-baking soda is a powerful salt, so it can dehydrate.

Does drinking salt water have a similar effect on cows as it does to humans? Are you offering another tank?

Hello all. I have emailed you but it must be in the spam folder. Do you initially plant your Kentucky 31 Fescue or is that a native grass in your area? I was going to buy some seed but wanted a definitive answer. And I guess the same goes for clover. The lady at a local store said not to plant red clover that it is bad for the cows? Is it true that Kentucky 31 Fescue may be bad for cows since it has a fungus named "endophyte" Thank you and awaiting your good word. Jim

Isnt sea salt better than synthetic minerals?

    • @amandar7719

Mr Judy mentioned sea salt is now potentially full of plastics..... rock salt isn’t synthetic.

Sea salt from the ocean, yes. Check origin of salt. Salt mined from ancient sea beds are not tainted with plastics and nuclear waste from Fukushima.

I'm not trying to sound like a smart alic or anything, but if salt is 90% bioavailable from a plant maybe ya'll should consider doing a foliar application of your pastures with a small spray rig.

Folier spraying salt on your land is hard on soil microbes. You will get a growth burst but you are killing some beneficial microbes.

It’s less harsh on them if you mix with a carbon source like humates or sugar. Might be worth a try for you. You also might want to consider starting to measure Brix levels. Would help you put a few numbers and data behind experiments.

Hi Greg, you and the guys may remember, at your Grazing School last fall (the 2nd week at least), Greg Brann discussed the use of Apple Cider Vinegar. He added it to his water and provided two different ratios he has used. Will you be making the slurry in tubs and leaving it in the paddocks? How will you fasten it down?
