Alex, I bought a Laramie EcoDiesel for under $45K and this truck was worth the wait. Refined and Rugged, the first tank of diesel went almost 600 miles at 26 mpg with 1/4 in the city - 3/4 highway. I can see getting 30 mpg on the highway and cannot wait to tow my Wrangler for off-road fun. Thanks for all your reviews, you helped my 8 month search for a new vehicle.
Best review I have watched so far... and I've watched ALOT of reviews on this! Moves along quick, very knowledgeable and to the point.
OUTSTANDING job on this review. The way you presented the information kept me paying attention. If it is any consolation, this video alone made our minds up on replacing our Ram 2500 manual 6 speed 6.7 Cummins with this model versus another 2500. It has plenty towing power and we can still get great fuel mileage for a primary vehicle. Thank you.
Thank You for your Extensive Review, Alex. I enjoyed it and found that the 2014 Eco Diesel RAM (best bet) will be the next purchase for my brother-in-law & his business. Keep Up the Good Work!!
great truck. my dad recently bought one like 2 weeks ago. we love it. great space and it looks great too.
Well Honest I turned 6000 miles today and I love this truck and ive had them all
Excellent review Alex. Diesel half ton trucks are way overdue.
americanbadasskb I congratulate Ram for being the first to bring out a diesel in the half ton truck. It's way overdue in North America, should have happened years ago. However, I'm not sure if I understand your comment...."first company to bring one that doesn't suck"...It's performance surely does not suck, which I assume you mean, because for longer term reliability none of us know that yet. I'm also happy GM will be offering a 2.8 diesel in the new 2015 Colorado....that's big news too, a diesel in the midsize truck market!
*****
what i meant was there was a car company that offered a diesel in a 1/2 ton pickup truck 15 years ago but obviously they no longer offer it because it didnt work, it sounded like bolts in a coffee can and consumers did not buy it. this ram with the ecodiesel as well as the ecodiesel itself has already won awards. now we will have to see how the public receives it. my bet is rams sales will continue to grow and ill tell you why because dodge dealerships all over the country have said that people have been calling in inquiring about this truck with the diesel and have been requesting test drives with it for over a year.
*****
and also saying that chevy is offering a diesel in the colorado is a moot point because dodge nor ford offer a midsize truck anymore and havent for a few years now. so honestly whats the point? there is no competition there.
americanbadasskb I think it's great Ram offers a diesel in the half ton market. I'm not slamming them at all, it's the best thing they have done in years plus the updated interior of the Ram is great. But initial quality awards, awards on the engine etc have nothing to do with long term reliability. I know it's a great performing engine, but I'm waiting to see what's reported some time down the road. I recently read a report of used cars based on 3 yrs old, probs per 100 vehicles....and some Chrysler and Fiat products did not fair well on the list. Not
Dude I'm alive and I remember Mitsubishi Diesels installed in half ton pickups in the '80's!!!!!! Don't get me started!
Great review again Alex. Very informative, to-the-point and practical. Happy to see someone smart doing these in-depth reviews. Very nice.
You can not argue with 420 ft ibs of torque at 1600 RPM in a 3.0 litre engine. Plus; who doesn't like a diesel? Sold!
Awesome video. Man, gonna have to look at this truck
Love your reviews, keep'em coming!!!
Alex, you do the best car reviews around. You are very detailed and knowledgeable.
Thanks for the complete review sir.
Thanks dude! Excellent video! I really love how you explained everything! Once I get my license, I'll definitely consider buying this truck! Again, excellent video, make more!
No no! Don't remove the foam. It's not Just for sound dampening. The foam keep the engine hot so the EGR can properly dispose the soot. If the egr has no foam over it the egr will be to cool and you WILL have a clogged Egr. FACT. Im a diesel technician and I have personally worked on this particular engine of breaking it down and building it back up.
What an awesome truck. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for a very thorough, unbiased and informative review, you beat the hell out of truck reviewers I've come across online. Keep Up the Good Work!
Your reviews are outstanding.
My favorite pickup truck!! Brilliant job bro.
Great review Alex! Nice to see an unbiased review (except for the brown interior comment) that allows buyers to learn more about direct comparisons.
Thanks
Well done Alex.. Very matter of fact and straightforward..
very informative review, good job
Excellent review. Very informative. Great truck. Thank you Alex.
Very nice review! It's amazing how quiet that Eco Diesel is. Seems like a really nice truck/engine combo.
good review Alex … really helps me make my decision to purchase the RAM.
Great review, going to test-drive one tomorrow 😃
Very good, very thorough review. Good job! This review may have changed my opinion on Chrysler based vehicles. I'm in the market for a truck, and this was very helpful. Thanks.
Excellent! The dealer had no idea about half of this stuff.
Left without giving you a thumbs up so I had to come back. Great review
Very awesome video, thank you for the information Alex.
Alex, you now owe us a review of this engine in the Grand Cherokee.
You are correct. The question is: when. So far Jeep hasn't inserted one in the press fleet near me and I'm, not clear how high a priority that is for the viewers yet.
***** I hope that Chrysler manages to jam this engine in everything it will fit in.
Something that most reviewers miss when comparing the EcoDiesel to the Hemi for towing is distance between refuel stops. Our 2011 Ram Hemi got between 8-10 MPG towing 5,000 lbs, with a 26 gallon tank (refuel at 23 gallons) that is about 180-230 miles to refuel. Most gas stations are laid out so tight that maneuvering a truck and trailer is a real pain. The EcoDiesel can easily extend that to 300-350 miles between refueling stops. That can be a big deal on longer trips for me. I almost bought a 2500 6.7 Cummins but the EcoDiesel makes a lot more sense. 25-28 MPG commuting or touring unloaded Is a huge benefit for me.
That is why we bought a 2014 EcoDiesel Crewcab 4x4 shortbed with Air Suspension.
Brilliant review and test, you can learn a lot about a vehicle for a video like this. Great economic motor coupled up to an eight speed automatic box, what more could you want, just the vehicle for towing your boat.
Great and very helpful review. Thanks!
even in 2020 thanks for that video ... iam going for those truck as my next daily here in germany
Amazing review. So thorough covering just about everything. :)
Best EcoDiesel review on YT hands down.
Excellent review Alex.
Impressive truck and fantastic review
Great job on this review.
Great Review!!!! I purchased my EcoDiesel 3 weeks ago and going almost 575 miles on one tank of gas in the city.....YOU JUST CANT BEAT THAT........
when do you normally fill your tank? at 1/2 or 1/4 or 1/8 and depending on which how much do you spend on diesel on average per tank. $80? $100+
Collin Holbrook Diesel here cost abput 81 cents per liter and for a 32 gallon tank I would need about 97 dollars to fill it up complete which is great for a pickup since it will give you about 550-650 miles in the city.
Excellent review Alex thanks
Great review. Thanks.
Great Video. Very informative. Awesome Truck.
Great video
Amazing review, very professional.
Excellent review. Thank you.
great review, very detailed.
Great review Alex. I see the Jeep lurking in the background with the top still on. Chop..Chop Alex...Chop Chop :).
Your videos are very informative. Thanks!
i agree with you all the way, best 1500 right now
What an amazing truck
Great review.
25 MPG!!! I'm lucky to get 20 MPG in my 350Z! These new cars are AMAZING!!!!
motor trend said it gets up 28 in their Real MPG category. which is partially why the ram won the Truck of the Year award for the 2nd....yes i said 2nd year in a row. never before has that happened!
killed the review Alex....great job....
professional review thank you alex
I'm amazed at the economy and ability to tow. Wish I had the $
Great review. Bit biased to GM (not much mention of Ford) however the MOST detailed review of the EcoDiesel on youtube yet. Thanks! Will be buying in Feb when they come out!
Well done Alex. I have a 2014 Longhorn with the 6'4 bed & the hemi. An insane beautiful truck..with in my mind the best interior on the market. I like the diesel but with our -40 temperatures in the winter it poses a few other problems. Again good job!
Great review and great truck! May have to trade in my 2011 Ram1500 with 5.7L in the future for one of these though I do love the Hemi still!
Great video and facts comparing to V6-V8 gasoline engines...(John Cummings) like Ram and Chevys! Just picked up my new Ram Laramie 5.7 with the 8 speed...it's awesome!
Great review and points made.
Pound foot is actually correct ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound-foot_%28torque%29 ) although in the USA foot-pound is used interchangeably (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot-pound_%28energy%29 ) in the UK and other imperial measurement countries pound foot is considered the only correct measure. It's a potayto / potaato kind of thing.
Alex on Autos You are correct! MikesMotorCityGarage.com has a thorough explanation that set me straight. Funny I've been getting pissed all these years and it was I who was incorrect in this instance. Foot-Pound is a measure of force over a distance (work=joules) and I've used it extensively in physics applications. When referring to engines torque output, the measure is Newton-meters or pound-feet. It refers to the rotational force applied which is torque. All this doesn't take away from the fact that your review was way better (more informative and detailed objectively) than the subjective crap put out by the Fast Lane Truck guys.
Great review! Really knowledgeable commentary. Thanks, New subscriber :-)
I am a ford guy but this option is excellent. I look to the HD and Super Duty models but this is one fine looking truck
wow i think he likes chevy...and the turn dial shifter is awesome to use
Alex, I really like your reviews - thorough, clear, detailed on the points that matter. I own this truck. One area that is not being reviewed well is the capability of this truck under tow compared to the "other" gas models. You did a good job here but a comment on the fuel mileage while towing is necessary. From the comments, particularly on the Ecoboost, you get V8 capability with worse than V8 mileage - most I know that have this motor under load get in single digits towing (they have no problems towing, but that power uses a lot of fuel). The Ecodiesel gets about 17-19 mpg towing similar loads (meaning you can go 400-450 miles between fill-ups vice 280-300 in an Ecoboost) I can fill up at 580 miles per 26 gallon tank (23 gallons max use) in daily use. The new Chevy 5.3L doesn't do much better than 12-13 under tow. Keep up the good work.
Good review. Diesel in Wrangler please.
Nice stuff, always loved diesel anyway
BTW the best way to go with the shifter would be to mount it on the collumn like on newer Mercedes cars
Curious to see what happens with the aftermarket for this truck. Could be my next purchase.
lots of kit in the 1500 and well covered Alex.
Would be interested to see maintenance costs over a couple of years for the the diesel and the hemi, and how does the cost of diesel in the us compare to unleaded ?
cheers.
Just need a bit more power to tow a 9k trtailer travel trailer, than my gmc 5.3L. this 3.0 will be perfect, teat driving a 2014, and 2015 tomorrow morning. Will give my opinion later
I wonder what the MPG numbers would be in a regular cab 2WD Tradesman. You have to get the 8Ft. bed.
When Ram introduces a console shifter I will be on their door buying one!
I have seen a dozen or more reviews on the 2014 Ram 1500 and this is the best and most comprehensive of them all. I am especially interested in the Ecodiesel. Very informative! Can you please validate that the gear ratio on the demo truck was the 3.92? Thank you!
I like how they put in for the cargo area in the side of the bed, a emergency pull chain as if someone gets locked in their hahaha
Very Nice, Thank you!!
Best Review Ever! :)
I like that in the Ram they decided to give the full time 4WD option along with 2WD and high/low range as well as neutral. Wish other manufacturers would follow suit. I know GM has the 4WD auto option as well.
An actual 25 mpg in urban driving with a crew cab is not bad at all. I think RAM made the right call going with the smaller diesel. The Cummins V8 is going to help Nissan get noticed, but it won't return anywhere near the mileage this VM unit will.
i love this truck
Thanks again sir. You did one inclusive job describing this new Tech in the Ram. Boy that Titan upcoming 5.0L turbo Cummins diesel would sure go over great in this Ram. Looks like Diaz pulled one over on his past employer. Shame on Chrysler. The 5.0L would have been one great addition to the Dodge line-up.
That really is a well designed truck! It's not the trucks of yesterday that is for sure. I hope that Chrysler can get that additional $4k price down for the diesel. This should be a big seller either way. Another nice review Alex. Thanks.
you lost me at msnbc, lol. Seriously though, thank you for the vid! I personally am not a fan of Dodge, but this Diesel, I love it.
With the price differential and the extra cost of diesel how do you justify the purchase compared with a gas vehicle having nearly identical towing specs?
this is the best truck i tested on my lhistory
That was a great review, but i'm still on the fence with the new Silverado or Ram?
like always, awesome review. thanks pall. by the way, what a beautiful place, what state is that?
Alex on Autos Those orange tree service trucks and the house by the road gave it away ;-)
You forgot to reveal the most important reason the Ram is awesome: how damn good looking it is! I love the two-tones they have, and the front end is just so ruggedly handsome. Wonder what the 65mph flat road mpg is? 35?
This is an awesome review
You only need a class 1 or higher CDL when you reach a GVW higher than 21,000
Hey Alex do you have any inside info on when exactly these will be hitting the dealerships? Or do you only know like everyone else that's it early 14'?
Thanks
Love your reviews Alex. And this truck seems an amazing bargain especially the Tradesman model. I did want to point out that your comment about needing a CDL to tow anything over 10,000lbs is not exactly correct. The combination of the truck and trailer GCWR must be over 26,001 lbs AND the trailer GVWR must be over 10,000 lbs to require a class A CDL. This is per Federal law.... §383.91(a)(1)
I wanted to point this out, since you have mentioned it a couple times in other truck reviews. Since the truck itself is so light compared to a Big Rig. Your not likely to ever run into this. The truck would have to be 16,001Lbs to be at the limit.
What I should have said is a non-commercial class A license. California and (according to RAM) about 20 other states require a class A for any trailer over 10,000lbs and any 5th wheel over 15,000lbs. www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl648/dl648pt2.htm
Besides the fuel savings that make the payback period about 4 1/2 years, keep in mind that most of the price difference is returned to you via higher resale value. No brainer unless big incentives on gas versions exist. (or you like drag racing your pick up)
man, that gear shifter thing drives me nuts lol, but no manual?
Have had nothing but problems with my Ecodiesel. Now in shop for the 4th time. Has been there for two weeks waiting on parts and was just told by service manager it could be at least another month. Am filing the paperwork for Ram to buy this truck back and will not buy another. Parts backlog is ridiculous and the owner of the dealership threatened to refuse to do my warranty work for complaining. Will not buy another.
Did you notice that the check engine light was on during his review? lol
TheCobruhAlienat0r come on guys, you all should know this. check engine light is on because he has the key turn to just power on. The engine is not on. All vehicles, dodge, ford, gm all have this. Hope it helps
I drive a 2013F-150(company vehicle) with the eco boost v-6. No power, transmission whine day 1. Been in the shop more than 4 times with transmission problems. Coworker had his 2014 engine blow at 15,000 miles. I think the Eco tech is in its infancy from all the manufacturers whether it's gas or diesel. Hope they get it figured out before I'm due for a new truck.
I've watched many, many reviews and the ability to deliver a gramattically correct monologue over 20 minutes while covering pertinent topics is astounding. Well done!
