- As we continue the fight against Rabies in Grenada, I decided to start a series showing my challenges and success in trapping mongooses around the island.
The Indian Mongoose was introduced into the Grenada and the rest of the then English colonies, back in colonial times, to control the rats and snakes that were in the cane fields.
Unfortunately, some of those that came to Grenada had the Rabies virus. The long term fallout of that is that the mongoose is the only known vector for the rabies virus on the island.
The mongoose is also a prolific hunter with no natural predator on the island, so they have decimated the local wildlife populations and continue to do so as their population increase.
We get contracted by private establishments to trap and humanely euthanise these mongooses at certain areas on the island where their population overlaps with human activity.

Thank You. Funny how decisions made by the old Colonial powers have ramifications to this day. The Spanish, among all their other bright ideas also introduced the pig to North America. Makes me wonder how different things would have been had they not.
QUESTION: Will your efforts, along with any other Mongoose eradication initiatives, be able to make positive inroads to substantially lowering their population?
Yes, we are still paying for those bad blanket decisions.
If a national effort is made to depopulate and eradicate then it will make a difference.
it was done many years ago and almost completely eradicated them, but the project was halted when the numbers got low; instead of increasing the efforts.
You killing those Mongoose?
What are you going to do with them.
The cat, possum, and iguana were released.
The mongooses were humanely euthanized.

Our mongooses are aggressive. Is it because they are caught in the cage? Will they be aggressive with dogs too
Most mongooses are aggressive yes. Normally they would run away; unless they are sick with rabies.
Then they will attack dogs, humans, and other animals.
Great work Doc.
only thing i would have liked is some education on mongoose' how they got to grenada ,whether they have any impact on our ecosystem positive and negative, how to keep them away than if possible.
Go look at my mongoose trapping series, there are videos with all the information. Also read the description of this video; plenty information there as well.
@@drcartervet thank you!!

love it!!
Why you trapping all these animals?
It is VERY EASY to read, as the explanation is in the introduction section. The Mongoose is an invasive species introduced by the Colonial powers and not the indigenous peoples.
