I was on the ship in 83 when the fire happened. It happened during our 121 straight days at sea. I remember moving up the firehose until I was on the nozzle down in a smoke filled flaming space. It was one of those things in my live I will never forget. My respects to the six shipmates we lost that day.

I was there that fateful day. With the airwing, I helped a corpsman friend of mine carry oxygen bottles from the flight deck down to the hangar bay where the injured were being treated. Some of those shipmates appeared unconscious. I wanted to help somehow but was promptly yelled at by an understandably upset doctor and left. Got suited up later that afternoon with an OBA and waited to go down to help fight the fire when it was finally called.

As a member of the Mar-Det in 1983, I helped extract the KIA'S.
This was the longest day of my life.
    RIP

I was in 3MMR in 87. I can tell you SNIPE stands for
    Specialized
    Naval
    Propulsion
    Engineer
    Marines were MARDET
3 main was DC AUX and we could steer using our props vs rudders
Every engine room had an artist when she was welded to the pier in the early 80’s.
3 main had a demon face. 4 main had the coolest which was a cobra spread hood and the mates painted it.

In 1982, the Ranger's machine shop had to make a shaft for one of her escort destroyers that broke, by making 4 four feet section, because, the destroyer broke her main shaft and it was floating.

'Twas a Corpsman with VA-25 1973-75 and on the Ranger for a couple of cruises. Fun to see the Medical Department again, looks different though. I primarily was in the STD (sexually transmitted disease) unit, but did many a call in the Dispensary, on the ward, and on the flight deck. The flash autoclaves in the OR were great for seafood. Didn't think much of it at the time, but in retrospect some good memories.

My brother was on the Ranger for several years. In August of 1982 he died along all of his flight crew but one. ROBERT Suite (unsure) if that is the correct spelling. It was the beginning of August. This happened in the Indian Ocean. Do you recall that?
