Hi! Do you reverse phase on the hi-hat mic when it is placed from under?
One mike, four feet away, is perfect. Replay will sound real every time.
I'm stoked you guys close mic the ride. I was looking this up on Google a few days ago to get some opinions and I really want to have my ride close mic'd live (plus I have a stack hat close to it, kinda like Jared's aux hat). Great vid, as well as the other mic'ing vids. Cheers!
great video man this is helping alot as im trying to help my friends band record a demo. great videos overall- subscribing
the 3:1 is used for avoiding phase issues, not for getting a certain sound, but it's definately important.
Really helpful info for a novice like myself.
THANKS.
you should buy a stereo condenser mic if your not checking the phase between your overheads. That's why you make sure they're the same distance from the snare. Phase problems are going to cause a lot of frequencies to dip out and make things sound off
great stuff, and you listen to what fans ask for i love it so much information!!! XD
Thanks for the information. The song at the end is mostly on the toms... I was expecting some extra cymbal action... you know, based on a video about how to mic cymbals... :p
Third? No just kidding. These video's really help me out. I'm thinking about getting mic's for my kit since I love to make drum video's but my sound is really bad. These video's are really helpful for making my decision on what mic's I'll get! Thanks drumlessonscom!
Hey Jared I love your videos could you guys make one on how to make a drum cover?
awesome... thanks
very nice and informativ! Thanks :)
do you guys use room mics? nice videos 👍
Don't you get the reflection from the snare at the hi-hat in the hi-hat mic, if you place it underneath? 6:12
These videos are great and helpful!
It would be cool if you at some point could make a video about how to record your drum set on a very tight budget, because all these things you do sound great to me, but you have so many really good and expensive mics... The recording equipment is probably 5 times times the price of my whole drum set...
I just want to record my drums with good quality for my band and for my youtube covers but I can't spend that much money in any way.
Hi,
I just wanted to know what other mic can be used for hihats...
sm94 as well? or pg81?
thanks
Alex
yup..the thing is that when you use to stereo pairs of mics you can pan each track left or right to get an equal sound on both sides....
Do you have any ideas how to put my condenser mics because i only have 2.
Thanks
can you mic overhead with just 1 mic?
I think that it would good to mention or address in your video's, that most drummers are setup or are allowed to be setup, before mics are positioned. I have run into what can be an uncomfortable situation, where the engineer will set up mics to accommodate his or her mic positioning mic placement TRAINING first, and not take into account, playing comfortability.Set up first, then mic. This is very important for drummers, in that we should be very comfortable while recording.
Thanks

what is the full model name of the apex condenser mics for overheads?
What would Niel Patrick Harris do?
do a vid on how to use a mixer and syncing up the drums with songs for drum covers and stuff
what cymbals do u use
awesome vids , keep them coming , only thing i would like to see is the acustisation of the room ur at or show me the actually which ur at , i have a tiny room , and when i play its sound awful , and i do tune my toms , the thing is actually the room im at , tested my kit in school and sound awesome , but in my tiny room it sound awful , so i would like to give some tips in acustisation of the room and some tips of the room itself
WWBW.com has bundle kits of sure mics. You get 3 overheads three for toms/snare and a bass mic for 400. They aslo have bundles for 300 and 200.
Do you know what hi-hatt and overheads he is using?
i didnt ask de full question be4...
so let me say it agen..
i have a hihat 14" and a crash 16"
de brand is meinl HCS..
i play rock..
so wat oder cymbals i need to complete de set?
@Kruemel952 ...you can use 2 or better 3 microphones. One for the bassdrum and the other 2 as "overheads". Then you need a small mixer or a soundinterface (with 1 inputs per microphone) and then you are ready. It is a budget around 200,- to 400,- including interface and microphones. Here on YT are many tips and tricks for low budget solutions.
@drumlessonscom
wat do u think?
i got that mic set just two days ago... for the price they rock (:
I just got a full setup for pretty cheap. Get the Pyle Pro PDKM7 mic set...it comes with kick, 2 overheads, and 4 tom/snare mics. I got an Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire (sixteen channel mixer that plugs directly into any computer...they make a USB version too if you don't have firewire), mic cables, a few stands, and Studio One Free version (PC recording software) all for $400 ish. Not saying $400 is cheap...i am on a budget too and I had to save. But compared to most professional setups...
anyone have an opinion on what the best cymbals to use with mics are?
Mat Earl A customs sound great for most styles
@instrumentenfreak Thanks for the tip! Though it would be great if the drumlessons-guys could do a video of that sometime... their videos are always very informative! :)
@pompernickels
de same brand?
CAD makes a $200 set that I use thats awesome, buy some XLR and your good to go as long as you either have a mixer or interface with 7+ inputs
@brimbles72 OF COURSE IT SHOULD
What are those small microphones called? Ones you use for cymbals.
Ah. AKG C430?
AKG only as close miking ^^ as overheads they used i guess Suhre sm92?
Someone help! What is a good program for computer to record drums. im on a budget btw lol
I use audacity which is free it helped me when I first started out. if u wanna download audacity just search up audacity on google and click the first link.
Try an XY or ORTF configuration.
Because Im struggeling what cymbal to buy
ive got 3 overhead mics is that ok??
That's fine. Just remember to make sure there is no phase happening with the mics.
love the shirt. haha
I also play at church,we dont need drum mikes yet,our church can take 500 people in full. But my question is,I want to buy two new cymbals, what right and left cymbal do you have??
Silentchrome A custom are great church and any style cymbals
Sorry for the late response but anything darker by Meinl is great for contemporary, gospel, or any other softer style
so that it doesn't ring isolated when opened. it'll keep splashing with the top cymbal. that's what the little screw at the bottom of the top of the hi hat stand is for. :)
Have I seen this guy on mycymbal vids?
Last one!
Try Nady SPC-25 Condensers for a very cheap condenser. It has a 5 star rating on Musician's Friend and it's only 30 dollars!!!
Shure SM94 overhead & AKG C430 hihat

Jared knows shit all about mics.
I play at a church in a room that holds about 1,200 people. The stage is like a traditional theatre. Large catwalks and all. They say my cymbals overpower the entire system. I don't necessarily believe this. I went to school for studio recording and happen to know our system is a friggin power house! Any suggestions? They had me moon gel and tape up the cymbals Zildjian A's just to deaden the sound and humor our sound technician.
If people are telling you your cymbals are mixed too hot in the live mix, then you need to turn them down.
Studio recording and live sound are very different. In a large space like that the high frequencies of the cymbals move very quickly and quickly fill up a large space. Many venues I do sound at don't even mic the OH's because of that fact. Taping and gelling them probably isn't the solution though. Room treatment, or just turn them down would be a much better alternative.
I took the gels and tape off when they weren't looking and went in the night before and reset the OH's properly. Like magic they said it sounded great
Now the issue we're facing is one of our singers insists that the drums (now that the shield is down) is bleeding into the vocal mics and everyone is getting only drums in their ear mixes. I know this isn't the case. The vocalist get lost completely if they pull the mic even a quarter of an inch from their mouths so there's no way the drums 20 feet away are picking up loud and clear on the vocal mics.
Joel McCoy I'd suggest playing around with the set up at your church, and probably using the shield
Joel McCoy It all sounds like an ego thing to me, specially if the vocal mics are dynamic. Recording the problematic vocal mic and reviewing it with the vocalist in the room would solve that issue, and this would be a great opportunity to teach him how to properly set his IEM mix.
2 sm57 overheads for $100? WHERE.
@RifGrette i guess
Jared looks like Nick Swardson
like nick swardson combined with a penis. the other guy looks like a bloated Javier Bardem
