It seems like the journal was meant to be a stand-in for a romance book. I mean, she refers to her grandmother's journal entries as 'chapters,' and the whole episode definitely has a romance novel vibe. Now that I think about it, if this was meant to be Trek does woman porn, why not just make Grandma's diary a sexy novel that comes to life via some alien that's tapping into Beverley's fantasies? That'd certainly make everyone gossiping with Beverley for the steamy details a lot less creepy ("Yes, Bev, tell us more about the horny escapades of your 100 year old grandmother and her toy-boy.")

(ugh) You can _replace_ the candle you know. Because maybe it was the candle _holder_ that was possessed, and the energy from the candle flame was enough to activate the spirit/program inhabiting the metal holder (which could have been made from some extra terrestrial metal obtained from a meteorite, giving it qualities necessary for the spirit to possess).

    • @crazydud3380
      @crazydud3380 ปีที่แล้ว +7

LOL. Yeah. It isn't that Trek couldn't be sexy. OS did it all the time (ignoring a lot of the sexism in it), and Enterprise managed it, even though it was way too obvious about it at times. DS9 and Voyager could pull it off occasionally (not counting Jeri Ryan being sexy AF without even trying to be). TNG, though? Yeah, that always kinda failed. The show just wasn't sexy, which is fine, of course.

As bad as this is, at least it's got its hilarious parts. Most troubling episode for me is The Child where Troi reenacts the 200th issue of Avengers - ie she's impregnated by an alien, gives birth to a child which grows up insanely quickly and exists only to learn about how Troi and her friends take care of their young and then disappears into space forever, never to return.
And everyone treats it like this glorious event in her life, and not as it should be this horrendous violation of her body and mind that any normal person would need years of therapy to fix.

The Federation is a very science oriented society, so I guess it's kinda an honor from that perspective. They'd get some fantastic data from that, and the Enterprise-D IS an exploration and science vessel.

That script was originally written for the planned “Star Trek Phase 2” which ended up not happening because they decided to make The Motion Picture instead. The character of Ilia ended up becoming Troi in TNG (just as Decker became Riker and Xon became Data).

That's more likely than you think, plenty of people today choose to live a life similar to the past. It's not a hard thing when you still have access to modern conveniences and health care. I think it goes to show just how well off they are that entire worlds can be used for nothing more than roughing it.
If you read scifi literature try Implied Spaces by Walter Jon Williams, it takes place in a future that's so advanced people are effectively immortal even if they are murdered they can be revived within a few hours. Energy is infinitely abundant and people live lives pursuing their interests, working centuries long careers then retiring just to eventually take up another interest.
It opens with the main character exploring a world that exists in a man made pocket dimension that is.... and I shit you not.... an entire universe dedicated to live action roleplaying in a World of Warcraft style setting. Your mind is placed in your chosen characters body, say an ogre or a dragon... then you do your thing until you are bored!
Good book. Has nothing to do with that whole concept though.

DrewLSsix it is out of place when you send people on a several light year colonization of a planet, build a weather control satellite network and then create a colony to look like Brigadoon with lamplight and crofters cottages. That's a reenactor theme park with a dome so the temperature is right and rain won't spoil the big outdoor activity.
Now if you did it as they were way out past the cargo runs and had to make do with hand tools and candkes because their Roddenberry-Generators all stopped working after they crashed...then it could work.

@@anodosarcade7355 the story is actually one that's fairly understandable as the show was on a breakneck production schedule and the various teams that ran the production were often given rather rough direction. And once time energy and money had been sunk there wasn't much you could do about it.
In this case I believe the aliens were described as vaguely tribal and one of the main alien characters was to be cast as black. That turned into "they want us to cast a bunch of black people" by the casting people and the tribal thing just kinda fleshed the whole thing out. If the aliens were supposed to be a metropolitan high technology hub of science I don't think it would have struck quite the same offensive chord. Same thing if the aliens were given the standard trek alien look of random prosthetic and inhuman skin tone.

"Sub rosa" is a Latin phrase that means "in secret". It literally translates to "under the rose" because a rose used be a symbol of secrecy. It's pretty much the same as saying "on the down-low" in Modern English.
Because granny was boinking ghost dude on the down low, yo. Or rather, secretly getting manipulated and exploited be the asshole. Sounds much less funny when you call a spade a spade. And by "spade" I mean rape.

I've been binging my way through TNG, and just waiting for this episode so I could watch your review. Neither disappointed.

I guess that's the nice way of describing how he got knocked on his ass by Beverly's dead grandma.

I love this! I know it wasn't the worst episode, but there's a scene in "Masks" where Sir Patrick Stewart is holding some alien obelisk like a dong. And Jonathan Frakes is trying so hard not to laugh.

It only occurs to me having watched "A Night in Sickbay" just before this video that these BOTH involve funerals followed by tv-friendly erotica. Coincidence???? I think not!

Hilarious video! I believe the idea in this book of a ghost seducing a human was very popular at the time this was made because of the book"The witching Hour", which came out in 90, and the follow up book"Lasher" which came out in 93.Written by Anne Rice, both were about a woman who is seduced by a ghost who has seduced several of the women in her family line over the years. The ghost eventually, with her help, incarnates into a physical body and all hell ensues. When I first saw Sub Rosa, that's immediately what I got out of it. Your take down is awesome. I never enjoyed this episode so much as watching your review of it.

I have had parasitic boyfriends before and I just had to laugh when he said “I love you. I’m going to take care of you”. Yeah, like he can keep his corporeal form long enough to go out, get a job and support her. Lol
