The Dewey Decimal System is a logical and popular book classification system for libraries and schools.
Step 1: Defining the system
Understand that the Dewey Decimal System categorizes books according to 10 broad classes, including computers, technology, arts, and literature.
Tip
The Dewey Decimal numbers on the spines of books are "call numbers."The book’s Dewey number and the first three letters of the author's last name make up the book's call number.
Step 2: Classify further
Learn the classification within the 10 main categories, which divide books according to subject matter. For instance, the 700 class, Arts, is subdivided into 10 divisions, including Drawing, Painting, and Music.
Step 3: Narrow further
Consider subdivisions within subdivisions. For example, within 750, Painting, you will find Color, Symbolism, Religion, and Human Figures.
Step 4: Get more specific
Divide the subdivisions into sections. The subdivision of class 700, Arts, includes the division 750, Painting, which includes 759, Historical, which comprises such sections as 759.11 (Canadian), 759.13 (American), and 759.2 (British).
Tip
The decimal in the Dewey Decimal System lets books be organized into smaller, more precise categories.
Step 5: Assign rank
Arrange books numerically on shelves within the library, according to the Dewey number.
Step 6: Pinpoint number
Scan shelves of similar numeric groupings to pinpoint a selected book. Dewey numbers range from 001 to 999.
Did You Know?
Did you know? The creator of the Dewey Decimal System, Melvil Dewey, preferred to spell his last name "Dui."

I learned something today. After all these years of meandering in local libraries in France, I neither heard nor read "Dewey Decimal System." It is widely used, BUT the name is never mentioned. To say that I figured this was the French libraries' system! lol In the library I go to, it is called something along the lines of "theme and subject matter classification index."
I almost feel like this video was created to deter you from leaning the Dewey Decimal System. The music in the background sounded like spiraling out of control.
My threads are fresh and I'm lookin def, yo, what's up with L O C?

The main thing to learn is the main categories of the hundreds. After you've learned the hundreds, you can just look in that department for what you are finding.
The Dewey decimal system results in shelves of books that are extremely well grouped. We would probably organically put our books on our own shelves like this--but probably not in alphabetical order!

how’d you both do?

You'll love the Dewey, ooey, gooey decimal system a lot.
I haven't been in a library in 20 years. Kind of shame, but seriously. Never understood the system. I just wanted to go where they kept the Jules Verne novels.
When you randomly wake up this morning, with for some reason having the words Dewey Decimal system in your head.

trying to re-teach my self dewey because i just applied as a library aide
Me too! Shelver (Page) interview in 2 days. Hoping this knowledge helps, but definitely needed a different resource than this video!
How I understand it is that you just put the numbers in order. In the video number 700 was arts (as in this row of the library holds all the art books) and numbers 700-800 are all art stuff. And the authors last name just tells you what section the book will go in. Numbers go in numerical order, last name goes in alphabetical order

BUT BECAUSE OF YOU IT TOOK HOURS!
11 years later, did you find it?
This is some very interesting information. Thanks for sharing!!!
I’ve learned nothing from this video
Same.
From my severely limited knowledge. One uses Dewey to group books to make it easier to find.
Like say you have to catalog a book on baking a cake. And your library only has a few main groups: “Information” which is 100. “Science” which is 200. And “Baking” which is 300.
Right off the bat you would categorize the book with “300”, since in falls under the main group, which is of course baking. Now to filter it down farther, because if we don’t it would be hard to quickly find something specific on baking, for example a cake.
So now let’s say that under the 300 “baking” section is: “cakes” which is 1 “Cupcakes” which is 2 And “pies” which is 3. We have to categorize a book on baking a cake. So we would put the 1 after the 3 in 300, so when people search for a book on baking cakes they can easily search for the “310” section. So the Dewey decimal would read “310.xxx”. And looking at those numbers you can tell that the book is on baking and more specificically is about baking cakes.
This could get more specific if that was needed.
I’m not in college for this. But this is how I understand it.

That is something way too confusing to make any sense at all. No wonders why the librarians loves the RFID tags installed in our library.

So funny in the 80s they system was taken for granted we just knew it and couldn’t put into language clearly to explain to someone who didn’t understand it.

Interesting
You will need a library...
First 3 letters of the author's last name. CUT TO: The spines of the books with 4 letters for the authors' last names.
I minute in and I'm wondering why Alphabetical order isn't enough
This music seems to intentionally try and make the system confusing. It's discordant, scattered, and as loud as the words.
and dont forget the dewey decimal system is your friend
Someone in a video I just watched said this is hard stuff. I just googled it and learned this in 10 min.
How you learned it. I cant not figure out after . Number
Dewey Decimal Classification is a system to arrange books on Libraries' shelves.
Mohamed El-Helaly Thanks, man.
IF THE DECIMAL IS LEAST TO GREATEST... WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE AUTHOR INITIAL? DO THEY NEEDED TO BE ALPHABETICAL?? IM CONFUSED.
Yes, it's alphabetical if you have a few books that all have the exact same call number.
Say you're interested in yoga, but you want to do something creative. You've heard that some places offer Yoga with Dogs, because there's a calming, heartwarming companionship element added to the class.
Time to do some research. Let's go to the library and see what books they have in the yoga section, if any of them get into creating classes of yoga with dogs.
The librarian tells you that the Yoga section is 204.36.
So you look for where the books start to have 200 on the spine label. (Did you find yourself in the 300s? No problem, just back up.)
Okay, you found the 200s. Moving top to bottom and left to right, go along until you get to 204.
Turns out there are LOTS of books that begin with 204. No problem. Because you're going to go along the 204s until you find 204.3.
Hmm. Several books with 204.3. Still no problem, because we know that what we want is 204.36.
Okay...204.34 ... 204.35 ... Aha! 204.36.
There are three books with 204.36. You pull all three out and flip through them to see if any of them get into yoga with dogs. You finish looking through them, and now it's time to put them back.
Uh oh. They all have the same call number. In what order do they go?
This is where the alphabet comes in, using the last name of the author.
You have authors Brown, Little, and Stuart.
These would be re-shelved left to right as:
204.36 Brown, John
204.36 Little, Ella
204.36 Stuart, Mary
I have NO idea if this little story helps, but I hope it does. I wish you the best!
The sub division has a sub division. That seems overly complicated

I'm so glad we have the internet now and this method of research is almost obsolete.
I say "almost" only because some books are not yet available in PDF and are not yet out dated.

200 Is religion. I think it's obvious.
Honestly, The Dewey decimal system is actual garbage. These systems should be intuitive and this is anything but. You have to memorize numbers and codes to get any use out of it. I think its just pretentious. My opinion.
Please do not take a book by the upper part of the spine. 🤦
you will need : "A library" . Ok I'm out.
It should deter you from dewey ..
