I can understand doing it for fun and excitement but for a plumber 2 ounces of gold is only a couple of days work judging by the rates they charge.

You are correct . Here in South East Texas, prevailing hourly rate is $120.00 per hour . So , an 8 hr day comes to $960.00 . That makes the two day total $1920.00, roughly an ounce per two days , give or take .
I think the real reason Russell and Shane prospect is to supplement the regular income . I seem to remember them mentioning that this was their weekend gig .
I will say this , given half a chance , I would love to be able to prospect along with maintaining my company . Plumbing has it's money , but it also has some huge drawbacks.
