  • Barsana & Govardhan (Part 2) | Mathura Vrindavan Series
BARSANA : On top of one of the hills of Barsana, is the Shriji's Temple, which is where the original Radha Krishna Deities of Barsana reside. Shriji is the locally known name of Radha Rani. According to the Varah and Padma Puranas, Brahma pleased Shri Krishna at the end of Satya Yug by performing arduous worship. Pleased with Brahma, Shri Hari instructed him, "Go to Brsabhanupura and take the form of a hill there. In that form you will be able to behold all Our sweet pastimes.” On top of Brahma-parvat is a temple of Shri Laadli Laal. This temple is said to have been actually established by king Vajranabh 5000 years ago. He was the great grandson of Shri Krishna and the grandson of Pradyumna. But with the courses of time the deities were lost.Later Narayan Bhatt, one of the disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu excavated the lost deities in the nearby place and installed them here in this temple. Ladli means the beloved daughter and Lal means the beloved son thus the temple enshrined with the deities of Lord Krishna and Radha is also known as Ladli lal Temple.
GOVARDHAN : Govardhan Hill or the Giri Raj is situated at a distance of 22 km from Vrindavan. It has been stated in the Holy Bhagwat Gita that according to Lord Krishna, Govardhan Parvat is not different from him. Therefore, all his worshipers worship the pure rocks of the hill just like they worship his idol. The hill is made up of sandstone and stands 80 ft tall with a circumference of 38 km. Some interesting places one gets to visit the hills including Mansi Ganga, Mukharvind, and Daan Ghati.
History says that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill during his childhood on one finger to save his village of Mathura from fierce rains and thunderstorm. This hill is thereby considered holy and is visited by worshipers on Guru Purnima, Govardhan Puja in devotion by walking 23 km barefoot around the mountain. After Lord Krishna had saved his village, he told everyone to worship the hill which is why Govardhan Puja is a day after Diwali. It is a serene place, and definitely, a must visit!
MANSI GANGA : Mann means “mind” and Ganga is another name for the Ganges River. It is said that Mansi Ganga was brought to Goverdhan with the mental power and meditation of Lord Krishna. There are a few instances in Hindu legends stating how and why Mansi Ganga was brought to Goverdhan.
The most sacred and the largest lake in Goverdhan town of Mathura is the Mansi Ganga. It is situated right in the heart of Goverdhan. The pure water of Mansi Ganga is considered to be more pious than that of Ganges River. It is said that one who bathes in the river Ganges is purified of all sins, but one who bathes in Mansi-Ganga Goverdhan is not only purified of sins but will also achieve prem-bhakti, the highest platform of pure loving devotion to Krishna.
RADHA KUND : Devotees who take bath in the holy water of Radha Kund on the very day of Ahoi Ashtami is considered highly auspicious. Married childless couples seek the divine blessings of Radharani. It is believed that by taking a bath or dip in the Radha Kund on the special day of Ahoi Ashtami, the couples get blessed with a child. That is why hundreds of couples visit Radha Kund every year and take a holy dip in it, which is popularly known as Radha Kund Snan.
Couples who have been blessed with a child also revisit the RadhaKund at Govardhan, Mathura, to pay respect and gratitude to Goddess Radha Rani.
