My only caveat with the box art video is that while I am well aware Scott is a Mac user, he is missing out on some of the very best artwork available for PC. I collect vintage PC game (pre 1996) and it is some of the most beautiful artwork you can find hands down. Games like Dynamix Red Baron or EA original big box Need for Speed. The list is endless and needs a video like this to cover it. GET A PC Scott!!!! LOL

Can we just appreciate Scott’s attention to detail and running jokes? At the start of the video when he’s describing his illnesses he says he has “Bed Bats”, and as some will remember in one of the early 2017 videos he visits Bed Bath and Beyond but one of the letters isn’t lit up so it says “Bed Bat and Beyond”. God damn I love this man

Two things: My European Gameboy Player came with the disc in a normal DVD sized case. Not the Japanese one.
The European DS Boxes are thicker because our manuals include multiple languages and are potentially thicker.
Yup, would just confirm that. Will point out it was essentially a day 1 Gameboy Player, so it's possible a change was made later in the production run, but yeah.
Player disc came in a normal sized Gamecube DVD case, complete with a proper, full colour sleeve insert like a game would.
Counterpoint to the DS argument - a lot of other pal Nintendo systems have the same thing with their manuals, and the boxes were the same size. The best example I have is DK64, the manual for my copy is incredibly thick, and has multiple languages, but the box is the same size as all the others. Not saying you’re wrong by any means, but moreso pointing out how utterly ridiculous our chunky DS cases are.
Also, fun fact, I have a couple of American import DS games, and all of our manuals fit in their cases perfectly… but no, we must chunk, thanks Nintendo!!

The reason why the European Ds case was a lot thicker than the American one was because the European manuals contain multiple languages.
Yep. Also the health and safety booklets. US ones tend to have English, Latin American Spanish and French.

In Canada because we have 2 official languages but used the same DS case as the US some games had the issue where the manual was too thick and the manual cover would tear off. Rest in peace my Digimon World Dusk Manual.

28:23 PAL DS games were thicker due to the larger manuals inside, which contain several European languages, as opposed to just English (and perhaps Spanish) in the US releases. 3DS are the same thickness as they no longer provide manuals for their games.

Actually, I found out when I got some NTSC 3DS games last week that our cases actually are slightly thicker still. They're the same thickness as your old DS cases.
Some NA games have French too. Likely due to Quebec in Canada.

They actually do have a functional purpose. These 'spine hats' are called Obi strips. These are used to provide translations to Kanji for the Japanese market. The cover art was unchanged for the Tetris and was in English so it was just an extra hand in helping the consumers know what the hell they were looking for or buying!
But Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast games looked completely different compared to NTSC-U cases why where they not in Japanese to begin with?
So that's what the obis are for, you see them with Japanese CDs too and I always wondered why they were included
Japan just has a minor obsession with excessive packaging, always looking to be that little extra bit wasteful. It's not like they're only included when it's necessary to translate the title on the spine or something.
On that note, some of those old double cases have the game title in katakana on one side of the spine and Latin letters on the other.

That is an absolutely amazing quote and I thank you for letting me know it exists.
It is pretty spot-on, nobody speaks up until something’s done wrong in most cases.
Criticism is important, but we should spend more time praising things that do stuff right. Would get more positivity out that way.

Scott - I know this is over a year old and you'll never see this comment, but the "Only For" on the Gameboy Advance games was because parents were getting confused between Gameboy/Gameboy Color and Gameboy advance games, thinking that the GBA game would work on GBC, when of course it wouldn't. Ending in an open game that couldn't be returned.
It's sorta like the Wii U syndrome - when I worked retail parents thought the Wii U was just a Tablet add on for the original Wii.
Which is part of why the WiiU failed. Interesting how they made a mistake they avoided in the past.
@@somebody_a_guy the Wii was one of the best selling consoles in all history, so they wanted to keep trying to ride that hype train and install base, however by keeping the name they did the opposite.
People had already moved past the Wii and it just seemed like a 300 dollar attachment for the same system.
I'd say it was a similar mistake made through different intentions.
Shame since the Wii U had potential.
Glad the Switch was a home run however.

@@somebody_a_guy It's even funnier than that. This also came up with the NES and SNES back in the day, and they successfully dealt with it then. Hence the Only For Super Nintendo stickers. They literally did the "ride the hype train and keep the name" and made it work. 20 years before they screwed it up.
Fun fact: the "spine hat" that Scott talked about on the JP Dreamcast packaging is called an "obi" (Japanese for belt). These are found on not just Dreamcast and Saturn cases, but almost every CD. They were generally used to quickly denote what title was which with the artist, background behind the CD, the barcode and the price.

If I remember correctly, All Game Boy Advance boxes had an "Only For" label because GBA games weren't compatible with Game Boy or Game Boy Color.
Exactly. A LOT of people were still using their GBC in the GBA and even in the DS era, so adding that little tag might have saved a lot of kids parents from ruining Christmas. 😅

They actually don’t look to bad in my opinion. The problem I have is that (in my library) Lego Jurassic World and Pokken Tournament have the white stripe at slightly different heights so they don’t line up correctly and it ruins the look.

Not gonna lie, as a European, whenever I see those thin ps1 cases from North America, it always confuses me a bit. I always think they look like someone lost the original box and just stuck them into a random CD case.
Wii manuals in America had two or three languages sometimes, so I'm impressed they never had to make the packaging bigger

All Japanese music CDs, even to this very day, come with an "obi", that cute paper spine hat lol. Still have no idea why but I'm not surprised they did it with video games as well
The OBI has Japanese text, the spine underneath has English text. They're actually trying to help us I think? But we're too pernickety about completeness. Going off of CDs I've ordered from Japan, what they tend to do over there is either tuck the OBI folded inside behind the booklet, or keep all their CDs in plastic protective sleeves that hold them together, which they will often include when you buy them.

The larger DS boxes in europe were to accomodate the larger manuals. Many manuals had English, French, Italian, German and Spanish translations. With manuals becoming smaller by the time the 3DS came out, with Digital manuals becoming preferred, europe's boxes also became smaller, in line with other regions.
It also wasn't a universal thing for PAL boxes, Australian DS cases were _usually_ the same as the ones used in NA but every now and then a game would use the larger European boxes, usually the ones that would sit in a clearance bin.
TheUndeadGentleman usually the smaller cases were English online titles, where the larger were Europe reprints or imports. Hence all those random age ratings
@@theundeadgentleman4998 The inconsistency of DS boxes on the Aus market was the bane of my existence back in the day. I hate the Euro style boxes, they're so chunky and I don't need a five language manual, I only speak 'strayan.

Eu person here with a few things to note for y'all:
Our cases are often fatter because the instruction manual inside of it has multiple languages in, and is therefore WAY bigger than US/JP instruction manuals. By the time we hit 3DS, they stopped including instruction manuals, and such, the cases got to be smaller and more in-line with the rest of the world. Also the EU Dreamcast cases are rad and I won't hear anything against them!

Thank you. I was about to share this. I’m in the US but I bought the Tingle DS game and was like TF...about how thick it was and looked it up. Or maybe I noticed the 13 instruction manuals in the front took up a lot of room.
I listened to 45 minutes of Scott complaining about something I mildly care about. The guy really can make me watch anything.
I just remembered that this is one of many cases where Scott does nothing but complain about box art for a whole video.

@@TylerFurrison Nah, the Audio quality of the voice-over segments is clearly better than when he’s speaking to the camera, plus he’d be checking the script quite a bit, so he likely recorded the voice over and recorded the box displaying separate.

Sadly, that is the future. Physical games will get rarer and rarer. Pure corporate greed will always win. They're already hinting at standard AAA game price being $70 across the board, and the digital trend was obvious before that even happened. Digital sales increase their profits on a level of magnitude. No manufacturing costs and it eliminates the possibility of people buying second hand. That's gotta mean like triple the profit at least.

It’s funny how you made me look closer to the brand logo and realized how Delallo claims to be made in Italy but i’ve never seen it on the shelves (i’m Italian). Then i went to Google to search for it and discovered that their only office in Italy is 5 minutes on foot from my home. Might gonna check it one of these days.
17:01 Not exactly "no reason". I suspect the PAL's non-jewelcase design (Playstation and Dreamcast) was to accommodate the thick multilanguage booklets. Here in Scandinavia the game manual would be in four languages (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish) though the game would still be in English only. If the manual wasn't localised it would still be in several major European languages. Some only had the manual in English, which made sense. If you can't read the English manual to an RPG game entirely in English then a localised manual won't do much. But a lot of games had thick perfect bound manuals and they don't slide well in jewel-cases. I have music CDs with booklets so thick I can barely pull them out, let alone doing it without ripping them.
You should divide the PAL SNES boxes from the Italian ones, the German ones and than the general PAL ones. THIS because in Germania they almost had the same template as the USA ones. Than the general PAL are different and each game has its color instead of the general black we had in Italy (and we also had the GIG logo on it) :))

Americans pay $60 USD, we pay $100 AUD, and while the publisher technically gets the same amount of money from us, objectively we're paying more out of pocket. I have to laugh whenever Americans complain about a new game costing sixty dollars. I'd LOVE to only pay sixty bucks for a brand new game.

So, I doubt anyone will come across this comment, but a nerdy little point about the long cases on early CD games, double-thick cases on the Dreamcast and PS1, and the "spine hats" on Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast releases: they're more or less all quirks of the CD format. I haven't noticed anyone else here pointing this out, so I figured I'd punch out an overly verbose essay about it! Enjoy!
The long cases were common with early CDs; typically, the disc would be in a jewel case, which would in turn be in a long cardboard sleeve. This had two purposes: to allow retailers to display CDs on the same shelves as records, and to deter potential shoplifters from stuffing the small discs into their pockets. I'll admit that I've never come across one in the wild; from what I read, they more or less disappeared in the early 90s due to concerns over their disposable nature.
The double-thick cases were originally used for albums on the CD format that were spread across multiple discs; oddly enough, the quirk of printing the name twice on the case was also seen here.
The "spine hats" are Obi Strips, and are common on most physical media in Japan. Albums, games, movies... they all come with them, and serve to provide a brief explanation as to the package's contents to potential buyers.
So yeah! A few little things I thought were neat and worth pointing out. If you made it to the bottom of this comment, congratulations! I hope you question yourself for reading it as much as I did for spending 10 minutes typing it out at midnight on a Wednesday.

My absolute favorite game packaging is hands down the switch, and it’s not even my preferred console. Like Scott says the consistency/simplicity can be too much, but that’s exactly why I love it. They just look so great shelved, and the thin petite size allows you to fit so many together. *Chef’s kisses*
