I am having a very hard time with MS. Its seems like they want all their apps to do everything all the others already do ! I mean, we cant have a do it all office, team, planner, project, outlook, etc.... enough is enough. We pay already, why would we have to pay more for just some minimal improvements of one app ? This is ridiculous.
I just got the new Planner rolled out to me today and I was hoping that tasks could be added to Outlook Calendar and sync when start dates or due dates change. Seems like it's still not a feature. Or even better, I wish I could see all tasks in the side bar of Outlook (the way you can with To-Do tasks) so that I could drag them to my calendar as events. I'm sad that the integration is still lacking, especially since I have been waiting with bated breath for the "new planner experience" for weeks.
BIG NEWS: Tasks asigned to me in Planner Premium plans start showing in the new planner in teams under "my tasks", as well as in MS To Do. This morning, nothing, but now they show up :) Finally
Thanks for the video. Well done. We are moving project for the web/planner and I'm a little surprised I haven't seen any migration tools to move from one PM tool to this.
Thanks for the demo! It's awesome to see To-Do and Planner coming together to make task management easier. And those extra features from Project for the Web? So cool! As a company all about productivity with Microsoft tools, we're pumped to dive into these new updates. Keep 'em coming!
They have only taken what they already had and mixed it together. The product itself has not improved nor includes new features. I am very disappointed. I had to make a decision by the end of the year whether migrate our system from Asana to Planner or not and you know what? Asana integrates with teams. Microsoft planner is still ridiculously inferior to all the other options out there, like Clickup.
Does it still have the fatal flaw of there being no 'read-only' view/permission? Which means anyone that has access can totally screw up your Plans through editing and deleting. When will Microsoft realise there are many occasions when oversight is required, viewing progress, etc. without the need or ability to wipe out things (and remember folks, deleting from Planner is unrecoverable). Great content by the way 👏
Good point. I really like using Planner, but no backup / restore function is really bad. Even completely restoring a M365 Group will not recover a deleted plan. That being said, there are loads of non-microsoft cloud services that are difficult or impossible to back-up.
yes, the issue of somebody coming in and deleting a task or even a project seems a huge issue. That something like that is unrecoverable is really an amateur mistake in my mind. I can't really believe that Microsoft couldn't figure out a way to recover lost tasks. and yes, there should be a read only version of any of this
Great video Jonathan! I was wondering could do do a video for admins on how planner integrates with Sharepoint and other MS apps and how to administrate it?
Woudl be great to have a video on how you can manage all tasks that you have assigned to others in one place, as a manager of a dispursed team its seems almost impossible to track what has been assigned and the progress.
Hi Jonathan, I have a question: I missed the possibility of creating recurring tasks in the premium planner. Do you know if this feature really doesn't exist?, or if it's on the roadmap? Thank you very much. Congrats for the review.
@@bearded365guy Only the simple planner has the “repeat” option. In premium planners (which use the project style) the "repeat" option is missing. Have you tested this feature in your environment? (I'm in Brazil, maybe it's not yet available globally). Can you confirm please ?
Thank you for the overview. We might have a couple of users that would really love the Premium package but we won't be able to afford it for all the staff. How do the premium features interact with the free ones? For example, if a Team had a premium plan assigned to it (with one premium user and the rest had free), can the free users view (if not edit) a premium plan? How about exporting data to Excel or something?
Great overview Jonathan. One question i have, is how to view tasks from the new planner premium plans in outlook? The old planner plans can be linked to Outlook but the premium planner doesn't seem to.
Thanks for the detailed update, very useful! One question regarding the new license: do I need one for each person who is going to access one of the premium features of the planner? Or only for the main user, for example, the project manager? My doubt is: if a person with the premium licence creates a Gantt view, will the person with the Microsoft 365 Business licence need a Planner Premium licence too or can access the Gantt anyway?
One more frustrating oversite...the premium plans, in board view, do not provide an option to "Show On Board" the checklists or attachments as a preview on the Task Card.
I love your videos, Jonathan! We're currently using Asana, but I'd love to switch since it seems so integrated with the O365 suite and now Teams. One thing I want to be able to do is manually drag my tasks around to re-order them. I can't find a way to do that in either the My Day or My Tasks view. Am I missing something?
Brilliant again as usual. Although on the Copilot part I already have the copilot license for M365 so if I pay for Planner Premium as I'm already paying for a dedicated copilot license, i'm guessing that will be available based on that in planner? No extra charge again?
Thanks, Jonathan, I always learn a lot from you and keep on top of best practices for managing our tenant and all the tools and options within MS we use. I've been using Microsoft's suite for years; I've always been a huge fan and didn't want to switch. Hoping they will one day outperform the competitors... So I thought the time was finally here, the new Planner for Teams was going to put us back in the game! But once again I was too optimistic it seems... the recent updates still don't fix the fundamental shortcomings... Other softwares are doing a way better job unfortunately, by far... So, I've decided, though it's tough, to start using ClickUp for project management for now. I'll keep using Microsoft for Outlook and storing files in the cloud. We're still using Teams for now, but I might switch to Slack soon. I really hope one day we'll use only Microsoft apps at our digital agency, but for now, that’s just a dream.
@@bearded365guy Wel... I'm by no means a professional so you may know how I should approach these, but these are the things that have been bothering me: - Premium features are not priced correctly; you cannot require a plan for 1/3 of the features that every basic project management tool has (especially not if, like me, you have already purchased the Copilot for a 365-yearly license). - Commenting/threading within a task (they tried to solve this by connecting a channel, but this results in poor user experience). - Notifications are still a mess, and you can't tag someone individually, absurd. - Time tracking-completed + remaining = total. How old-school is that? (Smaller) Businesses need a timer/ticker that you can turn on and off for accurate reporting/insights. - Sharing or reporting plans/status to externals are missing (even internally it lacks). - Adding attachments without drag and drop functionality? Really Microsoft? Often takes me 10 clicks to get it in. - Unable to change the location for attached files; at least let me designate a dedicated folder. - Checklist with a maximum of 20 lines and a character limit that's too short. - Activity feed: the premium version now includes it on task level, but the basic version should have this feature as well. - A convenient way of creating templates that can be reused when making a new plan (when having 100's you need a way to organize this as in a database style). - Permissions issues: I often need a private channel with a planner, which is not possible. I also do not always want every group member to have access to the plan (there are workarounds, but that in itself is already a red flag). I guess for business doing a lot of one-time projects this is fine. But small business owners that do care about having the best possible setup and internal processes, that also do repeatable work like marketing retainers and such, will end up disappointed. Especially after doing some research for other PM tools.
How has Clickup been for you? I have been using sharepoint lists for a little while now, but running into shortcomings as well. Was hoping that the update to planner would be what we needed, but reading through your comments I do not believe it will be worth engaging the finance team to get the premium planner features. I have been looking at trello, jira, smartsuite, and ClickUp- with ClickUp looking the closest to what we need.
I have a question about items added to a todo list are not popping up in the planner assigned tasks to me. Please be so kind and confirm this is the default or there is a powershell script to make this happen. Kind regards, Jan
In new Planner can you sort tasks within a bucket by due date? Manually sorting by due date is a pain as I have been able to sort by due date in Trello for years.
Jonathan, would you be able to test if it possible to now backup and restore Planner (Basic) when it is part of a M365 Group? I noticed that your M365 Groups had a "Team" associated with them (which is optional). When you created you shared plan, you chose a "Group" from the drop down list (13 mins 30 secs) and not a Team. I think the Basic Planner Data is stored within a "Group".
1. Is it possible to give read-only access to some members of the plan (in the planner plan 1) ? I don't want anyone to edit the plan and mess up a neatly planned project. I'd rather keep 1-2 members who can progress the tasks, and the other members to only view the tasks. 2. If the above case is true, then do we still need to buy planner plan 1 licenses for all members or only for those members who require write/edit permissions?
So we have the Planner app that has the green boxes, I don't see the one that your are using on this app. I am wondering if my agency is not using that new one yet. Any idea?
I imported a plan from Planner to the Premium Planner, and during the migration, the dates were altered, with a one-year gap between them for completion. How can I fix this error? As I enter new start dates, end dates are automatically being assigned.
If I create a plan with the premium license using a premium Project plan, will I be able to assign tasks to people who do not have the premium license, and will they see those tasks in their basic version of the new Planner?
Why are reviewers so lenient with Microsoft? Microsoft is charging an arm and a leg for mediocre software. The copilot issue at the end was just brushed over as if you weren’t just forced to upgrade to the highest plan to get a useless experience. The “premium” features are basic features everywhere else. It’s madding how Microsoft reviewers are ok with this. Other software are judged more crucially.

But now since the added project for the web capabilities, they should at least create a hub as a work of art. Trully dissaponted and probably will move towards other platfrom after 2 years of using.
Are the new features in the room with us?? I just see the same old system, just a bit of a cleanup.
