I saw when it first came out the software was extremely underwhelming but with custom firmware they’ve fixed most of the issues in it and it seems like a great budget device with a bigger screen.
I'm actually considering it. I want another affordable handheld with a bigger screen that doesn't have ass software, and so far this is also the first in this category that I don't find ugly, so perhaps...
I broke my PS Vita (dead for months now) and I have been looking around for a worthy successor for my retro gaming console. This one ALMOST did the cut but the D-pad and the joystick sensitivity was a big turn off for me. I just really hope Asus provides some ROG Ally love to Asia as well...
Man, broking a vita sounds terrible, it's my biggest fear while using mine. Personally, I want to replace my vita with a Odin lite or a RP3+, but the first one is a little to big for my liking and the second one is just to chocolate bar alike to be a perfect vita replacement for me. I want something that it fells good in my hands as well as being easy to carry around, sadly, nothing quite the vita.
@@0525ohhwell was also torn between the RP3+ and RG505 few weeks ago. But where I'm at, local retailers are selling the RP3+ at US$230. At that price I thought I'd just wait a bit longer and save up for the ROG Ally
Bad d-pads and analog sticks are a deal breaker. It doesn't matter how good the rest of the package is, you are never not using the controls. That's a pity, because that screen at that price looks pretty attractive otherwise.
I kind of ignored the warnings about the D-pad and bought an X28 anyway, and I've had it for about 6 weeks now. I wanted a big screen because my old-man eyes don't like the smaller 4" ones (or the 3.8" one that 4:3 content on the Retroid Pocket 3+ works out to be). The 4.3" 4:3 screen size makes a big difference. The 960x720 screen area is high-res enough that stretching and using an interpolation shader and stretching to fill the height looks good enough. The D-pad is definitely not as good as an Anbernic or Retroid device, but after a bit of an adjustment, I got used to it. I actually really like it for fighting games where you need the Hadouken or Shoryuken movements like Russ said. Platformers are okay with some work. I can play Super Mario World without any issues after some practice. All that said, this thing is just going to stick around as what I play until my Ayaneo Pocket S Dimensity 1200 arrives early next month. That screen is much nicer and Ayaneo's controls are typically much nicer as well. That device cost me twice what I paid for the X28, so if you don't have the money for that, this can be okay. The D-pad issues are real, but they _can_ be overcome with some practice. It's definitely a con, but so is the display size on the Pocket 3+ (IMO). Which con can you overcome? If your eyes are better than mine, the Pocket 3+ is probably the better bet.
@@alebustamanteq No but in the intervening two months, the L1 button has broken off entirely. The switch mounted on the PCB came loose and fell off. It's inside the system. And I can't really resolder it because the legs broke off. I don't feel like I'm rough on these things; nothing like this has ever happened to a handheld I've owned before. This thing is just kind of junk.
I’m wondering if the tape mod would fix the diagonals? I know a lot of folks did not have false diagonals with the rg35xx, but mine did, and the tape mod fixed it for me.
Thanks Russ for another great video and thanks for reviewing my fav budget handheld company.. Pooooowkiddy!!! ❤ I have an 🎉RGB10 Max 2 and with the way things are this is a little too late. Thanks for the video. It may be interesting video if you mod it? Swap out the joysticks and look to see if you can sort the dpad out? Maybe just a simple electrical tape fix the diagonal issue?

Only recently heard of PowKiddy. I love this device's size and shape and screen. Not in love with controls & performance. Wish it had more beef. Those reasons are why I'm not purchasing. If they were better, I'd order it today.
I just want a handheld that's close to or under $300 that can play GameCube games without tons of tinkering. I keep seeing new devices launching constantly but it seems like they're all either sub-$200 and can't handle GameCube or they're well over $400 and way more powerful than I want. Maybe I'm a niche market, but I don't need or want a device to play AAA games on, just GameCube on down. Can't wait for the day you get to review something like that!
Hi Russ, would you recommend this X28 (or another T618 device eg. RP3+/Flip) or the Anbernic Win600 as a better emulation device upto ps2/gamecube? I realise win600 is more expensive than this... but its still cheaper than getting a Steamdeck. Also, as a side note...where would you place An Odin or a Loki into the mix? I mention the Win600 because it was a cheap PC device...and although it cant compete with the other handheld PC devices....for latest AAA games...i'm really just concerned about emulation upto PS2//Gamecube as mentioned above. In summery : Is a mid/higher Android device better than an entry PC handheld for emulation???
This machine ticks so many box's for me. The style of the device looks sleek and modern while also being ergonomic. The screen quality and sound seem to be the best on the market for this chip set. Where I am based I can pick it up cheaper than the rg405m. It's so frustrating that they aren't spending more time on the control software because otherwise this would be arguably better than retroid pocket 3+ and cost less. It's literally a software update away from being the best handheld. Such a pity.
Thanks for the grad review! I have a short question becaus I couldn't find a solution. I bought a X28 and I want to put some games on the INTERNAL Storage (64GB). When I connect the handheld to my PC, I can't see the storage from X28. I checked all configurations but cant see any option to allow or disallow that connection/access. Ho can I put Data into the internal storage from the X28? Thank you so much!
Kind of a shame really, had the setup to be good but seems to have fallen short in both how the software handles the controls and timing since its being compared to several that released before it.
I dont really get your saying this is a better value compared to the rp3+. They are the same price, but the rp3+ has double the storage, and doesn't have controller the issues this device has.
There are plenty of t618 devices. I've noticed that the Retroid requires a largely manual setup. I think you should make your choice not on price, but on setup and operating system, as well as screen and controls.
I just got mine the other day, loaded it with roms, and it's great. I'm getting a lot of success with ps2 which is surprising, but very little with GameCube, which is disappointing. Everything else works perfectly for me. No problems with the dpad or the sticks so far. Just installed a decent launcher and a front end and I'm off and running.
My psvita crapped out ( bought it day 1 ) this powkiddy and the RP3+ is interesting to me, although after this review, the buttons and dpad are making me lean more to RP3+ . Is there a gameboy style device that is comparable or equal to the RP3+ in capabilities ? I would really like something that looks old school like a gameboy and the ability to free up my phone when playing some android games ( I use a gamesir x2 with my phone ) . How does the RG353V compare to the RP3+ and this powkiddy ?

I like it that you played Willow Arcade 21:20. That game doesn't get enough credit on how awesome it is.
The RP3+ was the VITA successor for me. But 8 mostly just used my VITA for retro gaming.
Steam deck is solid
@@Life_Through_Galleries too damn big to be a VITA replacement though.
I love my x28!!
Bad d-pads and analog sticks are a deal breaker. It doesn't matter how good the rest of the package is, you are never not using the controls. That's a pity, because that screen at that price looks pretty attractive otherwise.
You can probably do a dpad tape fix and guilikit analog stick mod.
But at that price these things should just work out of the box
babe wake up new t618 handheld just dropped
Dang bro, final fantasy looks different than I remember 25:19 lol
Do you have drift on your x28??
@@alebustamanteq No but in the intervening two months, the L1 button has broken off entirely. The switch mounted on the PCB came loose and fell off. It's inside the system. And I can't really resolder it because the legs broke off. I don't feel like I'm rough on these things; nothing like this has ever happened to a handheld I've owned before. This thing is just kind of junk.
Can you do an updated comaprison of the handhelds under 200$ ?
"the new $150 king"
Retroid pocket 3 : *the prowler music intensifies*
That D-pad is a deal-breaker!
Can you at least mention a few details about the processors like cores, mhz, etc? Also, can you send a bit more time on screen quality, and input lag?
All those other devices that's been shown he has done reviews on. So check out the review for the rp3+
@@Dracossaint What does that have to do with him talking about those components on the device in this video?
Powkiddy continues affordable line up❤
I’m wondering if the tape mod would fix the diagonals?
I know a lot of folks did not have false diagonals with the rg35xx, but mine did, and the tape mod fixed it for me.
I feel like a lot of people did XD I definitely did
Thanks Russ for another great video and thanks for reviewing my fav budget handheld company.. Pooooowkiddy!!! ❤
I have an 🎉RGB10 Max 2 and with the way things are this is a little too late. I love the screen size but I prefer to wait a year until there are budget devices that can do PS2 and Gamecube well not just 50/50. ❤
This is the best first larger screen handheld, so if you already have a V90 and want a bigger screen that does more this is it.
Thanks for the video. It may be interesting video if you mod it? Swap out the joysticks and look to see if you can sort the dpad out? Maybe just a simple electrical tape fix the diagonal issue?
Cheers Russ, always appreciate your thoughts on these handhelds.
I was all up for this until the dpad and analogue problems. Great review as usual though!
I see PowKiddy growing each time, we grew with it
I'm loving the race to the bottom! More bang for our bucks!
Im glad its android, I have an rg351p and i put android on it; much smoother and i can even play minecraft on it.
ROG Ally vs. Win 4 comparison, please Russ? But I'll probably still end up with the Steam Deck. I trust Valve more and don't mind the weaker hardware to save $300.
I prefer x28 and I’m happy with my purchase. The screen quality is awesome.
How do you like the controls?
@@The_Rifster the controls feel good, I liked.
Hi Russ, thanx for the amazing video and the review. I think I'll stick with RP3+
I have sent U a mail with Miyoo Mini Plus and Anbernic RG35XX mod, hope U will like the tactile mod 😉
Well, this looks good but im done with t618 handhelds. Ill stay with my gpd xp plus until a handheld mini pc cheap is available.
Really, the only step up from the Retroid pocket would be something like a Steam Deck. But in term of android units why would anyone get anything other than the RP or maybe Odin?
Your intro music always reminds me of Danielle "Danz" Johnson, Computer Magic.
I wonder, if those dpad and sticks issues can be fixed with modding of software tweaks. It could be a great device without those issues
You can probably do a dpad tape fix and guilikit analog stick mod.
But at that price these things should just work out of the box
@@Guitario666 of course they should but they don't so we can do something about it. Maybe. I love the size of the handheld, it's unique and offers much larger screen than Retroid devices do. Just trying to get some information about all the possibilities over there
@Maksym Tkachenko yeah you can do what you want. The screen is great and ability to diy is nice too.
But dpad and sticks are handheld 101 fails that's all I'm saying
@@Guitario666 that's true, won't argue with that 😩
You forgot to put Tekken 3 at 21:42 but otherwise, nice video.
Edit: Oh! and is there a micro function? Because I can think of two NDS games that need a device with such function to be finished.
I own one powkiddy device and one thing i like about these is that games are included which i like since i have no idea where to find roms to get games.
If like what Russ is saying you should pick up a device already. What are waiting for? I got a rg353m after on of these videos. Best toy purchase I've made in years.
RP3+ still the king, as long as you swap the buttons for dome switches.
11:10 the x28 blues seem radically inaccurate. Would be interesting to see a more detailed lab comparison of the panels. Notice the blue background is near identical to Mario's pants where as every other device there is a distinct difference
Does the x28 come with game system games pre installed like PSP, Game Boy, Sega, Capcon, PC Engine, Nintendo etc. etc.? Cause I’ve got the RGB version and it came with almost 20000 games already installed and I was just wondering if I was to upgrade to an X28 if it would be the same thing, Thanks
eh this is not the cheapest best performer at $150, that would be the RP3+.
For $20 more you can also get the Flip that has a better design and is more premium.
Both the Flip and the 3+ come with DOUBLE the base memory......
It's 150 shipped. Rp3+ gets close to 200 with shipping. But it's true that the rp3+ is the safer choice.
@@Xtoffer87 You are also far less likely to incur customs/import fees from PowKiddy because they fly under the radar so to speak.
Nice device. Bad timing for me. Already bought the X18S bk. Gonna wait for a more powerful device.
Thanks a lot for another great video
What is the daijisho theme you are using when comparing screen? Thank you
It’s called “pop”.
I was really hoping powkiddy made this their windows handheld
So what would happen if you swapped out the sticks to hall sensor ones? And do you think it would be possible to swap out the d-pad/pads?
It would still have to be calibrated differently.
No trigger support in streaming, no official OTA Update support bad analog and dpad is an instant non starter for me.
D-pad/analogue sticks are make or break for me on these devices.
Seems like a nice device for 150 bucks if you don't have one I think this is a steal or something cool to get your kids is it perfect no but it's $150 and that's to my front door because of this video I ordered one so thank you
What is better, this one or retroid pocket 3 plus?
Hey Russ!
It would be nice to hear your opinions on the PSP. I think it is still a great emulation machine because it's cheap and available. And it can play PSP games without a problem. 😁
So can the Vita. And PSP lacks some of the PS2 ports.
Love my PSP. I was looking for a retro handheld and then remembered that i got a PSP which i didn't use for around 10 years. New battery new micro SD and this thing is so much fun again. There are so many great PSP games and all the GBA SNES PS1 runs great 😸
@@Dec4AllTimeAlways I have a Vita too but I like to play more pick up and play games like the NES, Gameboy and GBA. The Vita is great but it's a bit larger, heavier and the PSP is more comfortable for my tiny hands. 😅
Good lord, that D-Pad and the analog sticks kill it.
Finally a something good from powkiddy, even though build quality is still inferior compare to Anbernic and Retroid.
This is tempting just because of the battery
Good review. This device seems like it's par for the course for PowKiddy.
In summery : Is a mid/higher Android device better than an entry PC handheld for emulation???
nop that thing can run some xbox360 ps3 games and all ps2
@@MrCcfly the win600 ???

This machine ticks so many box's for me. The style of the device looks sleek and modern while also being ergonomic. The screen quality and sound seem to be the best on the market for this chip set. Where I am based I can pick it up cheaper than the rg405m. It's so frustrating that they aren't spending more time on the control software because otherwise this would be arguably better than retroid pocket 3+ and cost less. It's literally a software update away from being the best handheld. Such a pity.
Holy moly the screen bezel is obsurdly huge.
You are right, too late. When I saw RP3+, it has the form factor, I scooped it up right away. Sorry, Powkiddy, please try again :|
daijisho theme shown in 0:53 handhelds screens pls ??? plss
It is called "Pop!".
Interesting. Which frontend and launcher did you install?
@@dadou193 Daijisho which is amazing. Also gotten a lot more luck with GameCube. Works pretty well now.
I'll wait for the Retroid Pocket 3S 😋
I prefer the D pad and left stick to be reversed, I wonder why so many of these don't use the offset sticks
Hi can you do a separate video on how to add new games in this hand held console please
It wins in bigger screen only. Runs pretty much the same and as hot as the other t618 handheld, when playing PS2 games.
Wish screen was a bit bit bigger but does look like good system ^^ How does it compare to Powkiddy max 2?
which one to get powkiddy x28 powkiddy x55?
