I first went over there in 2008-09, I was a tank loader at the time. A gunner in my platoon had deployed in 06-07 and told me a story about when his unit had deployed back then they were shown that clip in Kuwait before they rolled up north into Iraq. It was meant to show what not to do when interacting with the Iraqi civilians but the whole unit(of tankers) watching the clip cheered and laughed. I thought it was funny at the time. Looking back on it now it was not funny at all. We invaded that country and terrorized them for years. Just a bunch of kids with big guns. I don't personally know anyone that was KIA in Iraq but I damn sure know many that have killed themselves. We were lied to and used and I hope my generation learns from this and Afghanistan.

Seeing soldiers gleefully cheer a tank rolling over a man's car for catching him looting some crap lumber was the perfect visual allegory to describe the whole war. I hope those soldiers have some remorse for their actions today. They should be ashamed, and embarrassed by their absent leadership who never clearly defined what their roles were in Baghdad.

@Ari W you’re right. Destroying their vehicle was absolutely unnecessary. There were much better ways to have handled that situation, like destroying the lumber that they stole, giving them a stern warning and letting them go on their way. It doesn't take a soldier being trained in policing to do this, just a little decency. Instead they chose to bully those people which potentially created future insurgents. Yeah.. good job tough guys.

Watching those soldiers destroying that man's car for taking a pile of wood, truly destroyed my heart and filled it with rage at the moment. That is exactly the reason why you just do not have a military police a civil population, they are just not up to the task, their training is diferent, they are trained to use brutal force, deadly force to resolve a situation rather than de-escalate it. The level of irresponsability and the lack of strategy from our goverment to go "liberate" the iraqi people is unbearable.

After watching Frontline’s 4 part docu-series on the ‘08 economic collapse last weekend as the collapse of the Afghan government was happening live (2021), I think I might need a week or two before I can bare to watch this one. I was in middle school and high school when all this was going on so I didn’t fully comprehend the gravity of what was happening. Looking at these major historical moments from 1998-2012 as a full grown adult has ultimately made me feel disgusted and saddened. I cannot express enough how grateful I am that we have this type of journalism available to us. I hope and pray that we never repeat these mistakes. I truly want better for my children.

I was in my early 20’s when 9/11 took place. I was %100 on board with going into Afghanistan with a limited contingency in order to take out Al-Queda training camps but not occupy the country. I knew this would be a bad idea simply based on the experience the Soviets had in that part of the world. When they began talks of going into Iraq, I knew this wasn’t right. I knew at that point that 9/11 was being used as an opportunity for underhandedness. I can remember when we went to Iraq in 91, I was kid then. I can remember how successful that campaign was. But I also remember the day we invaded Iraq in 03, sitting there watching the news as it unfolded and thinking that this wasn’t right and with a war on two fronts, we were going to see many young men and women killed and maimed. There are young people in this country today that unlike me, have never seen one day of peace time since the day they were born. It’s sad.

Right before the FDA associate was taken to a hotel for a week and said no before and came out saying yes. He was tortured into saying it wasn’t addictive and needed opium to make the pill. Morphine is needed for surgeries, for battle medics, for ambulances. Morphine is made with opium. It’s a little know fact but is absolutely true. 70% of the worlds opium lies in Afghanistan and Iraq. I was the only student who raised my hand against the war. I firmly believe the only reason she asked this question was because I am middle eastern, and she was curious of my response. I remember she followed up by saying, “clearly some of you are more up to date on the news than others. Do you know what a few nuclear bombs can do?” Someone responded, “destroy a few cities?” She replied, “more like a few countries!” I wish I could track her down; I’d love to hear her stance on the matter now. I guarantee you she, like many others, refuses to admit she was fooled. The majority of Americans have somehow convinced themselves that they were always against the war.

The problem is when the press is a propaganda mouthpiece for agenda rather than reporting in a manner that enlighten and let intelligent people to make determinations or form opinions of their own. What is known is most consumers of information are not well educated or informed so they are more susceptible to accept what they hear as truth based on preconceptions and opinions they already formed from a more limited set of information from some early formative learnings or indoctrinations. Very few people take in all the information with discernment and then form cohesive thoughts objectively. This is very difficult. Since the end of WW2 the USA has invaded more countries than any other country. Always claimed to be in the name of Democracy & Freedom yet in nearly all those invasions no democracy was ever created, in fact. usually quite the opposite. I can think of many examples of the CIA overthrowing a democratically elected government and replacing it with a authoritarian regime/dictatorship but am at a loss to list one example of the CIA overthrowing a dictatorship and replacing it with democracy.

0:05: 🔍 Investigation into the truth, war, and consequences of the Iraq war.
10:55: 📝 Ahmad Chalabi's role in the fall of Saddam Hussein and the influence of the special intelligence office in the lead-up to the Iraq War.
19:27: 🔍 The Future of Iraq Project aimed to plan for the post-Saddam era, but many Iraqis were unaware of the challenges ahead. Ahmad Chalabi and other INC Iraqis were skeptical of the project and wanted to focus on who would rule Iraq after the war. Kanan Makiya initially declined to participate, believing that Iraqis would know better how to handle post-war issues. Chalabi and the INC received support from the US government, but their relationship deteriorated in the mid-90s. Chalabi later lobbied for the passage of the Iraqi Liberation Act to make regime change official US policy.
27:05: 😔 The U.S. government's claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq were not supported by reliable evidence, and there were discrepancies between the intelligence and the administration's statements.
34:32: 📝 The INC proposed a detailed blueprint for a democratic state in Iraq, including the removal of Saddam's bureaucracy, but faced opposition from the State Department who wanted to prevent rushing into a power vacuum before other Iraqis had a chance to organize.
42:48: 😳 The Pentagon's plan for post-war Iraq did not include the work done on the Future of Iraq Project, and there was a lack of consensus on why this material was not used.
49:32: 🔍 Secretary Powell presents evidence of Iraq's weapons programs, while Chalabi's attempt to lead an uprising fails.
57:51: 🔒 The lack of authority and instructions from the US military led to looting and chaos in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.
1:06:29: 😔 The aftermath of the Iraq war proves to be more complicated and costly than anticipated, with a policy of complete de-baathification leading to alienation and increased sabotage, and a delicate balance between military operations and civilian casualties.
1:16:54: 🇮🇶 Chalabi discusses the need for security and plans for Iraq after the US occupation.

Sadly, their profession is dying out because agencies cant cover them - this is why we get 1-2 journalists who studied a region for years yet only 1-2 lines of copyo if even. In my say corruption because a local friend of yours spilled th beans - work overseas trying to help rebuild wrecked economices, I founf befriending the journalists (local and natl.). I knew the one reporter f of both the AP and Reuters and they were still young but becasme journalists to expose fraud and waster - often US funds not monitoered. And they have connections to explore for a good 3-4 page story, and instead at best they can treat exposes with some weekent time.
I think its much due to the internet - and we all expect free news and think, "well someone will pay with a huge donation. We need to start supporting journalists.
And its become even worst with photo jourtnalists (I had some friends in that field who were paid nothing - and the global brands like Getty just care about owning the rights to all photos they can - as someone will eventually pay them.
It used to be a pillar of democracy (ghink of the coverage it took ~120 years ago and journalists who could pressure companies to be obligated to note all ingredients. Yes, it costs companies more, but it saves lives. Some one with peanut allergies must jnow ingredients. Now? any thing that helps people costs too mucthso lobby against it! Ugh.
Basically they used to have 1 reporter for 1-2 countries and now its about 20-1. They have no chances to do what it takes by living in a place, and building contaxts. [sprry for all the errors! Its late and i keep drifring off :P]

When this war started, I immediately had a sick feeling in my stomach. At the time I was already a veteran, enlisted as a cavalry scout. I knew then that when modern war happens innocent people die. My unit the 3/7 Cav was the tip of the spear, the first unit into Bagdad. The second I heard about the US going into Iraq, I knew many of my friends would die, and hundreds of thousands of innocent people would die as well, children included. I took the same stance when we invaded Afghanistan (another crime, btw). You don't invade a country just because they are harboring a terrorist. Why not just use special forces? Even if you have to violate a country's national sovereignty, like we ended up doing in Pakistan when we got Bin Laden. War has to always be the last resort.

I believe the war had several motivations. I think one was to shake up the status quo and see a Shia Arab country emerge, which would also strengthen Iran. The Sunny Arab powerhouses are a lot more open now. Also creating a battlefield to engage the Jihadist in theory mean that we don’t fight them here.

This war was a total failure from top to bottom, from experience I can tell you the Army was run worse than your local 99 cent store. People in key positions had no idea who they were dealing with, how to proceed with the people they were trying to keep safe??? and this isn't something only unique to Iraq, I dare you to go to any of our bases overseas and ask the locals, the students how the U.S. military personnel behave, we need more training for our joes, and those in charge need more resources and we need real leaders, not just a quick promotion to cause you happened to be there or can do push ups.

You would make a great military advisor. I can't help that think if we had more like-minded individuals like you in charge things would be totally different from what they are now

there was a story i heard on youtube (might have been from mikeburnfire with one of his chats with zach) about a base commander using a state-of-the-art aerial recon drone/blimp to obsessively enforce the fucking speed limit inside the base perimeter whilst patrols/convoys were getting shot at....

@@DanyCesc83 the one after was just as bad- was about a Senior NCO who kept driving out and ordering a driver to park his Humvee in the -same- place every day for weeks so he could harras incoming convoy's over something stupid/petty because he seemingly didnt have anything meaningful to do
      - i don't know if it was something to do with uniforms or what, its been a while.
please note, he was parking in the -exact- same place every time.
this was noticed, and the jackass got one of his men shot through the neck (gunner i think)

Besides all the negatives associated with this war, the Americans did create a decently stable and democratic Iraq with a somewhat competent military. Unlike Afghanistan where the people bowed to the Taliban as soon as the Americans left
