VIVA LA MILLO!!! Thank You so much for this Aprile Millo bouquet of beauty. THIS is what I remember at the Metropolitan, luscious, creamy, CLEAN singing, perfect diction, and devastating stage presence. Let me be clear about MILLO who I saw plenty during La belle Epoque of Luciano and Domingo in the bread and butter Operas, the Metropolitan was NEVER a problem for her to fill with projection, every nook and cranny of the opera house was filled, and the Metropolitan is HUGE as everyone has seen or heard about. Her Leonoras were fantastic and her sound blended beautifully with the male stars. Never ONCE did I hear a screeching cat on a hot tin roof sound from her, being off pitch, or sweating onstage. Her voice was powerful and could be heard over the chorus of Aida and the overzealous conducting of Levine. The Tebaldi comparison is really overplayed, she never imitated her and always found a way to personalize the characters with what she had in common with them, and not over thinking about. She was not an actress, but lived what she sang with the verbal action. Aprile Millo was unique, and always got standing ovations. That's what all Divas want.
...ok I checked it, I had mistaken a very high instrument note (trumpet?) for Aprille's Eb6... in that scene Dolora absolutely destroys everybody with her volume (made me realize the size of Maria's achievement singing above all there)
Ms Millo uses her musicality, her diction, her technique, her understanding of the text, all together with a naturally BEAUTIFUL tone, in service of the score to create a spellbinding moment onstage. That's what you call an artist. These singers today have a combination of those elements, but there's something missing. It's not complete. This is the difference.
I love Aprille Millo, I can listen to her Pace Mio Dio endlessly. Why can’t present singers sing like this, they have the material but technique is lacking. If I had access to all this material in my days. Thank you for posting another unique rare performance. Aprille Millo is stunning.
Soprano Spinto.....una verdadera soprano verdiana. Su canto te llega al alma. Nadie me ha conmovido tanto en esta aria como la Millo. Una de las grandes sopranos infravaloradas del S XX. Al igual que la turca Geyncer...
My favorite thing about the way she performs this aria is the way she incorporates a musical sob at the end of it. It must've been a natural feature of her voice that she could do this, because she did it every time she performed this aria and several others. I am absolutely floored by what the mechanics of creating that sound must be. And then to fall forward into a sob ... I think Verdi himself would've shouted when she finished this.
Probably the last Verdian voice heard at the Metropolitan Opera. She knew and admired Renata Tebaldi. She has continued singing in Italy. She is also very generous with young singers. I contacted her via her manager asking her to hear a gifted young tenor from Brazil. She set up an audition with the legendary voice teacher Bill Schuman. Aprile Millo is a great artist. She tackled this difficult Bellini role at Carnegie Hall: th-cam.com/video/TWf-Mw_d9bU/w-d-xo.html
There was a critic who wrote that there was something "seance like" in a Millo performance. That really is true. During a solo aria she created a great spiritual atmosphere and the audience was part of the journey. Not all singers are able to create magic in a performance
Elsa
I think that in New York more so than anywhere else, she suffered from something she could never control, and that was a serious case of being "not Leontyne."
I never enjoyed her sound! She has the same heavy thickness as Tebaldi, though she has a much easier top. I much prefer sopranos with more light in their sound
To be honest i don’t feel it, the tempo is somehow too exaggerated slow in some parts.. she sings it ok, but i miss some passion some fire some laggrime for her begging.. oh listen to Callas in this aria or Callas in the londonese Norma.. THAT is begging for your children’s life!!!!
...dont compare singers to Callas it is unfair to them and frankly to Callas as well... but I have heard so many bad versions of this aria... this is splendid on its own
Lohengrin O well you are right.. actually maybe the singing itself isn’t what i dislike but maybe the conducting 🤷♀️ but ofcourse not every conductor is Gavazzeni either...

completely agree and if my memory does not fail me she attempts a short but audible Eb6 at the triumphant scene in her Aida... I will try to locate it

She was one of the best Verdi singers!!! superbe❤❤❤
I just heard another soprano singing this aria. I had to come back to cleanse my ears with this great rendition. Bravissima.
Aprile Millo e Renata Tebaldi , São Divas , Incomparáveis !!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the greatest opera singers - so extremely human in her acting and her voice I feel in my bones.
Brilliant! Millo is SO underrated....for me, she's one of the most emotive!
What do you mean underrated? She had a spectacular career!
THE FINEST VERDI SOPRANO ....AND ACTRESS ....OF MY GENERATION I EVER HEARD LIVE AT THE MET

What I would give to witness this kind of singing in opera houses today...

One of my most favorite performances of this aria. Brava Millo!
she was always Exquisite
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who rather admired her in this performance. Plus with Pavarotti and Nucci, great night at the opera...

but she is Tebaldi's twin sister... but with Technique
I saw one of these performances of Ballo, and she was simply AMAZING! What a beautiful voice!!!
An incredible performance - what an amazing voice!!!
The last time Verdi was heard at the Met. BRAVA.
STILL MY ULTIMATE FAVORITE OPERA SINGER
Splendida! 🤩🤩🤩 Bravissima Aprile!!

BRAVA, APRILLE!!!!!!!
Sublime, le genie Italien
Ballo in maschera!Stupefacente!
Meravigliosa ❤️
love her, totally amazing singer
A true Verdi soprano, and beautiful singer without the added syllables and barking which marks most of the I Italian style nowadays.
completely agree
Stunning!! Goddess!!
Bravissima Maestra Millo !!!
I always thought of her as a Tebaldi with better high notes and considerably greater sense of pitch. A very feminine, enveloping spinto-sound.
a Tebaldi with very good technique...
john m I've never been remotely bowled over by Tebaldi.
I believe Tebaldi had a naturally heavier voice. I don’t like Tebaldi myself, you know this but this voice compare to Tebaldi is small.
@@evgeny9965 in terms of volume perhaps? cant judge that... but in terms of Technique Millo is a Virtuoso compared to poor amateur Renata
@@Tkimba2 I think the Italians know how to boo a scoop when they hear one, however they are also the greatest Nepotists
Brava!
Love Aprille
Stupenda! 💖
Possibly the last in the line of true lirico-spinto sopranos.

I dont think she could have suffered that anywhere else with all respect towards Price
She didn't do herself any favors on that score in comments to the press.

@@mao1878 Plus, the conductor was James Levine, so a lot of these performances will be criticized unfairly soley based on that.
