The Nigerian situation is not because you are many but rather because the government has not invested in building more university facilities over the years. Hence the artificial shortage it has created. Ghana created a whole tax called the GET FUND levy to fund tertiary education several years ago. That is why even with admission from other West African students, we still do not go through a long convoluted process to get admission like in Nigeria. Because we keep building new universities: the number of universities has moved from about 5 to 65 in less than a decade.

There are so many public universities/ tertiary institutions for a population of 32 million people. There are 15 public universities, 10 technical universities and 71 private universities. There are 79 nursing training and 36 teaching training schools that offering degree programs. There is one public university currently under construction. The admission requirements are determined by demand and supply and Ghana has so many schools for it's population.

Truth about the examination system in Ghana is that we basically have more trust in the West African Examination Council (WEAC) than our own private examination due to cheating and malpractices.....so we think it’s okay to enter the University with only WAEC certificates

Those multiple exams such as post jamb was introduced by the university commission because jàmb was no more credible. Universities wanted to organize their own exams to get the best students for their programs. Jamb is not necessary because they could not curb that mass malpractice that goes on yearly.

The various exams were introduced into the admission process in order to screen students properly. The exam malpractices in our country is so much. Students can't defend the great results they parade. Exam malpractices in WAEC, JAMB, POST JAMB EXAms etc. in Ghana, students results are credible therefore no need for further screening.

Ghana used to have this sort of system over 20 years ago. It was called UEE- University Entrance Exams but we pushed the Education ministry to change it hence the current system which only requires WASSCE...We prefer the word WASSCE or SSCE because we want foreign nations to know it is a S*econdary S*chool C*ertificate.
Ghana tries to meet international standards....
Also there are more private & even public Universities now & Legon is ranked one of the best in Africa & the Certificate is globally recognised if u want to do Masters, PhD abroad.

NOV/DEC simply means November/December which refers the date doe the examinations. WAEC used to be written in June/July. NOV/DEC (which is also WAEC) was again written in nov/dec amd people who failed some subjects in June take advantage of the chance to write Nov/dec to better their marks. The two exams are the same, the only difference is the time of the exams

Writing all those exams is unnecessary. It’s just a way for the rich and the well-connected to get ahead. In Ghana you just have to study hard for WAEC WASSCE and that’s it. I came from a poor background but I studied hard for the WAEC GCE (that’s what we had at the time) and passed very well but was still shocked to get into the School of Administration -only 70 students were selected for the program at the time - at the University of Ghana.

Ghanaians have a grading system that cuts across per each program with a similar status quo across government universities which is quite competitive so of course, one may or may not be able to make the cut off per the admissions. Each applicant ought to be an average student applicant at least though.
One ought to sit for either an interview or an entrance exams or perhaps one's end of semester could send you packing per poor academic performance...

Well actually there's another exam called Novdec also organized by the West African examination council. It's kind of an exam for home schooled students or students who failed their high school WAEC exams and oh yes u can also apply to University with both WAEC and Novdec Incase u failed in 1 or 2 courses in the WAEC exams and did better in the Novdec. The Novdec is an alternative to WAEC exams for those who need a WAEC exam results to get admission into the University in Ghana.

My brother had to study as if he was to write an exams organized by God for people to go to heaven.
He wrote the first one, scored 264; they cancelled that one and said they should write again; write again and scored 248 and they gave him one foolish course like that. He refused to accept that rubbish.
He wrote again the following year and scored 280 and was given law and he accepted it.
Anyone who has written jamb before would understand what it means to score 280 in jamb.
My mom is a teacher and during all this period, my brother was exempted from all house chores, activities and even church.
All he was doing was attending extra moral classes and studying, then every week, the family sets exams for him using past jamb question.
The idea was for him to score from 350 above so that no one would remove his name from the merit list.
    Jamb
