Another reason there will always be a little Timmy is that there are lots of gamers like me who like deep, single player experiences, and there are scant few of those being made anymore. It's all about multi-player now, and if you want that solo experience, you have to dig into the past.

If you want good single player experiences you have to stick to indie games these days unfortunately.

Your point about the 14 year old buying a SNES and games was interesting, because right now I'm in the process of culling my collection and a 19 year old recently bought a few common SNES titles from me and wants a few more things from that era that I'm selling. When I met him in person I was taken aback because my first thought was 'why is this kid interested in physical SNES?!'.

I also love retro games. I have been a heavy collector for 30 years. I collected heavy for Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Original XBOX, and XBOX360. I have been told for years that my Sega consoles and my OG XBOX were a waste of money. Now, to have these consoles and games make you a rock star. I now do a TH-cam channel to make back some of their rent money. 🤣

Your points are solid and I agree with you. The prices aren't going to go back and it is exactly in part because video games are now officially collectables.
Yes new generations will buy these games decades from now. I've been seeing it recently myself.
A little 7 year old kid with his mom was in this game store looking at Genesis games - he saw Sonic 3D Blast and got super excited. The store had two copies in stock and he was clearly looking at which one was best condition and had the manual or not. He went with the better condition one. His mom was there watching on happily.
I had seen the same kid before with his mom months ago. He was stood by me talking to one of the floor walkers about how awesome N64 games are while I looked at Genesis games. And I jest ya not - the mom came up and said to the floor walker 'Actually we were thinking about that Genesis game' (the exact game I was scoping out.) That mom... she's got a sharp eye and sniped it before I could ask to buy the game. I also heard her talking about enjoying the hunt for games and not liking buying games online.
SO... how is it that a little 7 year old boy born LONG after Sega is dead and the N64 is shelved is majorly excited over old games and not Call of Duty 2903293909 or Battlefield 327897392 on the PS5? Two things I'd say:
    A) Retro gaming / older game collecting in general is cool, it's socially established and it AIN'T going away because of that. It's popularity on YT/other social media is a reflection of that.
    B) When we are little, by little I mean... say 4 years old, we ain't thinking things like gosh 'I want to join X religion and sign up to X political party.' That's down to our parents and guess what? WE are the generation instilling the interest in OUR kids about how cool these games are and why they should be hunted. They'll do the same for their kids. That's how religion, political views and other things permeate through time.
We grew up with the SNES, Genesis, etc. We aren't telling our kids 'Fortnite 3278932 for the PS5 is good, I'll buy that for ya'. Hells no. We are telling them that Mario 64 and other old games are awesome. We are getting the old games for them (and our selves at the same time.)
    Edit: Typo fix.

@@LegallyInsaneGamer Absolutely. Not only that. Game developers have gotten lazy. They release games full of bugs, which also have content cut off for DLC. Need multiple patches etc which you won't be able to get in the future easily. And often rely on a backend server being online to download the content or just launch the game (even for single player games.)
Net result? They'll be worth less when their backend server goes down. Also, modern games may visually look and sound better. But many of them are below the standard of quality which older games were made to.

While I agree that we'll likely never see a "crash" in the collector scene, we've already seen a huge amount of game prices drop significantly in the last year alone. A majority of these increases were due to the pandemic, and now that things are slowly getting back to normal, the people that temporarily jumped back into gaming during isolation are moving on from them. Still somewhat expensive, but nowhere near what they were.
If we're strictly talking the heavy hitters like Little Samson, then you're 100% right. But for everything else they're gonna continue to either drop of fluctuate.

    • @LegallyInsaneGamer
      @LegallyInsaneGamer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, specifically talking about ALL rare games (not just massive heavy hitters like samson). The long term charts on every single game has only gone up, the short term is meaningless. Games (like stocks) dont go straight up, or straight down, they can trend down for 1 year, 2 years, 3 years but still be rising. Lets look at Otogi 2 for the Xbox only because I am literally looking at it as we speak as I am bidding on it. This used to be 15, its never going to 15 ever again, period. But at its current peak it peaked at 150 cad, now its roughly 90 cad.. is it going down? Is it actually going down? Or is the long term trend clearly up?

    • @LegallyInsaneGamer
      @LegallyInsaneGamer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Another great example: Tansformers war for cybertron, its not ultra rare but it is a very good hidden gem game that went under the radar and is now becoming more and more known and falls into the uncommon sought after collectible side, Do you really think a game like this is ever going back to 12 dollars? Never in history has such a game yet done so. The charts we have in existence today show they the long term trend continues with all such similar games. Perhaps one day it will change, but the what based purely on what we know today and the charts we have today, the rare and sought after uncommon games continue to rise.

This is called price correction in the market. Don't be fooled, most of these games will not be going down in price and either instead will fluctuate around their new bottom price or slowly continue to creep up permanently. Not to mention, we are currently going through an economic recession and everyone has said that would bring games down like crazy and guess what? It hasn't budged, it fact most games have either stayed the same price or gone up. Get ready bud, it only goes up from here for most games especially uncommon and rare games

I agree with a lot of your points, but I am on the side that believes we will reach a point where these games will stumble back to reality. I have collected for over 30 years and have a collection that garners much attention by those who have seen it. I believe that a ton of speculators came into the hobby because they realized that games had value. That created additional scarcity and a perceived rarity of items. Rarity is driven by production numbers, but also availability. As speculators begin to exit the hobby, and older collectors sell off their collections rarity gets impacted and prices get driven down. It is inevitable. Look at what happened to comic books, baseball cards, cabbage patch kids, beanie babies etc…there are a ton of examples.

  • @warmsignal
    @warmsignal 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think it's complicated. I think collectors generally care more about what they grew up with, but also collect subsequent consoles and games. Don't think there's a whole lot of kids interested in what was before their time to a point of desiring a collection. Those of us earlier on the scene, enjoyed a period where not everything was seen as equally collectible and availability was vast. Over time, more and more got into the hobby once they reached a certain age, so availability kept shrinking. Prices went up universally.
I notice at game conventions, majority of buyers are "age-proportionate" to what they're buying. The oldest buying the most varied (I've always collected from NES to modern day) and the younger guys are going after GameCube, PS2, DS, PS3, etc. Their interest in those systems of course, impact the market for those of us who collect it all. Price Charting indicates a lot of systems did plateau pre-pandemic, and many have seen a re-plateau after. It's just that free money is rocket-fuel for game collectors. Many are becoming fatigued and selling off, and today you certainly don't need a collection to play retro. So I kinda don't suspect an indefinite climb across the board forever, barring any more state hand-outs.
I do however, agree that some people see it that way. I sense more often retro gaming has become the apple of the eye to many who see fortunes in flipping, speculating, and investing. It almost seems like there's more of them in the retro space now, than there are actual gamers seeking and trading this stuff. So more of it is ending up in the hands of those who only care about the money. Perhaps it could drive prices up once they fully take over, but at that point I don't understand who's buying and for what reason. It's one big circle jerk of speculation and the whole market that made the thing relevant is mostly gone by then. I dunno, it's weird.
Also, you should definitely collect PS5 and new releases as they come out. Print runs are lower than ever, retail stores are about to give up the ghost, physical is becoming very niche and there will be less overall, than there were to go around with previous generations.

    Very interesting PGN!
A system I think that will blow in the future is the 3DS. Unique and innovative gimmick (3D) that is very hard to emulate (or impossible, idk im not a tech dude). When you look at people emulating the DS/3DS on computers, it looks so bad cuz it wasnt meant for the 2 screens to be on only one screen lol. Actually the wii U is the system that emulates the DS so nicely, cuz the touchpad makes it for second screen.
Having 2 screens that u can touch with fingers/stylus is so crisp. 3D is so good on the latest systems of the family (new 3ds and new 3ds xl). Library of DS and 3DS is SO good. And the 3ds can play all of this library.
Also, such an easy console to mod and when you do it, you have access to basically all nintendo handhelds games up to the 3DS! And the themes of the system when you open it are so cool to watch!

The reason i went for consoles is the pain it takes to get old pc games too run. Just put in a cartridge or cd is just nice.

You nailed a very good point. As a millennial, I have much more disposable income now to throw at these games to acquire them, just like yourself. Anecdotal I admit, but others like me competing in a market, supply and demand takes over, and I will even pay a nostalgia premium if it is a game from my childhood collection or a good one that I missed out on because my mother couldn't afford it at the time.
However, it prices out younger newcomers to the hobby because they are still at school or entry level jobs.

Hello. I am looking for opinions on that matter, why i stumbled over your video. This might become a longer text, but i would really love to hear your opinion on my thoughts. First of all i am a collector myself since about 2006 and i have more or less everyting i desired. I got it for (compared to now) a very cheap price. While i honestly hope - which probably gives me a lot of hate - the prices will go up, since it would increase the value of those items, i have doubts they will. While i might be wrong, I believe they problably will drop sooner or later. I am from europe, which might make i difference. Here we go.
I think your little Timmy example does not work. It is true, that there always will collectors for everything. But 2010 Timmy will be extremly rare. When we would sell our stuff in like 20 years from now, the ammount of sellers will be much higher then those who buy. That leads to a significant price drop. A simple reason of supply and demand. Timmys excist, but in no way there will be enough of those who would want the ammount of games the market will have in 20 years.
Secondly, and this is the big thing i have in mind, is the current overall market situation in interaction with the target group of retor collectors . Retro game prices are, like any market, dependent on supply and demand. Low supply and high demand makes a high price, low demand and high supply makes a low price. Right now, the demand is still high enough that the prices are stable, but this could change very soon - at least here in europe.
The reason is simple. The majority of retro game collectors are between 25 and 45 years old. As you say correctly, this is the group that has now a steady income. But that leads also to something else. It is also the group that will become (or already are) parents, which will shift their interest in a different direction. More so, it will bind their money for something else then their luxury items. This is even more true to the imobilia market. Many, who actually are in that age have not bought their desired immobilia (house, condominium) since the prices in the last 5+ years went up drasticly. Now this is changing, which will lead to many people, including myself actually doing this big investment of buying a house.
Buying immobilia, raising kids (adult stuff) means for the vast majority of people: Safe your money for many years to come. Or even safe your money AND sell stuff that you can spare, depending on your income.
This has to lead from my Pov to only one possible scenario: peple wont buy that many retro games anymore, and more peple are willing to sell them because of the need for money. What this makes with the price is self-explanatory.
I could be wrong, and like i said, i hope i will be proven wrong. Whats your opinion on my opinion? Thank you!
    Kind regards
PS. Sorry for my english, it is not my first language.

I’ve been collecting for over 35 years. I do agree with that there will never be a “retro game crash”…However, I wish there would be. I think many collectors are missing the reason why these games are so high priced though…and it’s actually a fairly simple reason that nobody seems to want to admit. I talked about this on my channel a few times. Yes, these older games and consoles are collectibles. On the other hand, they are also EXTREMELY outdated. Basically outdated chips in plastic shells. The reason for these outrageous prices is GREED by these resellers, plain and simple. For example: DKoldies. They claim it costs so much to restore these older consoles so they must up the prices. That’s a 100% complete lie. I’ve restored original NES consoles, Sega Genesis, N64’s, etc……all for under $30. And each one literally only took under a half hour to fix. The main culprit for older consoles are either the pin to cart connector (which brand new ones on Amazon are $15) and are extremely easy to install (and I’m no tech genius). The second, is a bad capacitor. A box of 1000 different sized capacitors run about $10. They’re installed with a simple soldering iron. Capacitors are literally 10 cents a piece.
Back to the outrageous prices: As much as I LOVE collecting retro games and consoles, these resellers are killing the enjoyment of collecting what I love. These games going for outrageous prices are only the price they are because of the reseller putting that price tag on them. They’re not actually worth that. These games are out of print. The company’s that made these games aren’t getting a dime from these sales now…..the resellers are. They (resellers) are raping people with their asinine asking prices. Retro games are only worth as much as the buyers are willing to pay. The only way to get these prices down (because you’re right, the retro market won’t crash), is for buyers to quit being suckers and stop paying these resellers their CRAZY asking prices. Sorry, but NO retro cart is worth more than its original retail price…no matter how old it is. If it’s a rare game, that’s a different conversation. But most of these games and consoles aren’t rare. MILLIONS were sold and distributed around the world. There’s no shortage of them. So in reality, GREED is the reason for these asinine prices. Essentially, retro games and consoles are nothing more than outdated chips in plastic shells. They’re age don’t change in value like cars or other valuable antiques. Collecting for over 35 years, I’ll never pay over $100 for a single cart, that’s just crazy. I’d never give in to these greedy resellers. As long as people give in and pay those prices, it’ll never change.

The overall investing market including the stock market, housing, crypto, collectibles, ect has been pretty much up only since 2009-2010 except for a couple months during the pandemic. It was pumped even more by inflation during the 2020 and 2021 bailout causing the inflation we see now. Given how the FED and government had to react to the inflation will likely cause a significant recession which will be coming in the next year or so. Collectibles just like every other investing vehicle will go down with the market as investors sell off their assests to pay bills if they lose their jobs due to layoff. If someone has 10k in games but needs to live for 6 months while laid off what do you think they will do? The smart investor saves up “dry powder” for these times and buys up these investments on a huge discount. I’m specifically sitting on funds to buy up farm land in this next housing dip. Buying games could also be a smart investment if the prices retrace most of the gains since 2020. We will see what happens, but smart investors would be wise to take a little profit now and not be greedy. The big collectors that are selling off their collections now may be the smartest investors.

What is the difference between your other pop culture collectibles and "nostalgia" investments you refer to and retro physical video games? You should know this. Name your collectibles and name the difference. You should also be able to tell us when the crash will occur? Has it started since right now after 32+ years since you said during the last year SOME of the retro consoles trended down based on the INDEX? I notice the NES index went down from 45 to 43 over a 1 year period (others like PS1 went up), is this something that actually means anything? If you say yes, you are clueless. My theory is backed by the actual facts we have existing today with 30-40+ years of history whereas yours is pure theory based on previous pop culture items which im still waiting for you to name and tell me the difference between the 2.
You are unable to understand the difference and therefore unable to think objectively. Your theory is a valid (not fact) and those who are able to think objectively know it is likely MANY years away SHOULD it occur but you are unable to understand why your theory may NOT pan out nor why it may be another 25+ years before the first ball drops (NES) IF it ever happens in the first place (based on todays facts, unlikely). Remember Mario and Little Samson are NOT similar and cannot be compared. Why is that? Did you know your index includes MARIO in it? Did you know Call of Duty 360 is not similar to or comparable to Spiderman web of shadows 360 or F1 2013? Do you understand why one is priced higher and continues to climb over the other? Do you know why the trend has never stopped and no 32+ year old game has crashed yet? How long did your other pop culture items you refer to rise for and then crash? Id love to see these. Are they beanie babies? POGS? Overprinted and not rare cards and comics? What are you referring to?

The term “retro” is thrown around so wily jolly. Xbox 360 and GameCube aren’t technically “retro” systems.
Some of this collecting stuff is borderline “hoarding”.
That 14 year old child isn’t the group inflating the market either! If anything, that group will be the least likely to buy and supporting the market rocketing…

I predict that prices for older systems will drop in 20 years. By the time Millenials are in their 60s the demand for these games will drop drastically and so will prices.
I can see people selling off their collections once they get older and need to downsize. At that point younger generations are not going to have a desire to play older systems that they did not grow up with and were released decades before they were born.

You are right. But we are humans. We are unpredictable. So, there are exceptions. Economy theories and predictions don't explain our behavior.
I got a CIB PSX Digital Video Recorder; a CIB DualShock 2 White Ceramic; a CIB Beatmania IIDX TurnTable ASC; a CIB Beatmania IIDX 7th Style; a CIB Stepup and Down Transformer; a CIB Sanyo Plasma TV; for 45 €.
And I've already found 43 vendors with low price tags (Original Retail Price - 70,80,90%). Many people said "There is no hope. Original Hardware is a Holy Grail.". It's wrong. It's 2024. The year of the Retrogaming Revolution.

Shall one bring their yellowed nes to a nursing home with hundreds of games off a dusty shelf at age 65? Millennials will begin turning 40 this year. As we age other priorities will be more important than a stupid overpriced disc or cartridge. These items later will be sold to pay health care bills, parents final expenses, mortgage payoffs, nursing home or assisted living fees, etc. be lucky to get pennies on the dollar. People treat games like some stock portfolio

@@back2the80s Nursing home at 65? That is very young to be going to a nursing home.
The issue is that when millennials become senior citizens over the next 20+ years the demand for these old games will drop drastically and so will their value.
Younger generations will have little interest in obsolete games that they did not grow up with, so won't want to buy all these old games that go on the market as older people sell off their collections.
