Nice job and it is very pretty. I would need to try but off the top of my head I wonder if it might go easier to have the first row with a chain. Then ch one to turn and start your slip stitches across. I had forgotten about the rope necklace and ring my grandmother crocheted for me over 50 years ago. She used a metallic thread which looked much like the small gauge wire. After I saw your last tutorial I started looking for other tutorials and saw a similar ring. I will look for my crochet hooks which have been packed after a move nearly three years ago. I plan to do some wire crocheting. Good job!
If you use 28-32 ga wire- Yes, you can begin with a chain. I am using a pretty thick wire. 26 ga. It is a bit more complicated :) but more durable and stronger.

Interesting job. (Such earrings will also look good in the technique of "punto peruano" wire 30 or 31Ga (=0.25mm)
