I would like to meet people following this Great Woman teachings. I am reading a book that includes some information about Her work. I realli admire-Her! Hope to hear from Her followers. Greets from Argentina!
Dorothy Day was The Real Deal--A true Christian in DEEDS, not just words, slobbering over salvation and bowing mindlessly to authority, as is so common these days. God Bless Dorothy Day!
a great woman who respected and derived her strength from Christ's "bride", the Catholic Church. .."Christ became food and drink for us" ....the sustenance Dorothy shared with the poor.
I think that she was wonderful. She reminds me of Margaret Mary. She was truly repentant for all her sins. She did everything the slow but sure way. She always did was the most important at the time. She is prob in heaven, and i hope that she is praying for me.
Dorothy Day was and is a SAINT , no matter what she may want to be called - in fact A VERY GREAT SAINT ! and someday she will be called A DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH !
Im from conservative mississippi and im try to find a good group of christian anarchists to hang with, but i cant find any. If youre a mississippian or know of any christian anarchists here in mississppi, then please reply.
@wookie72 If we had 10,000 Dorothy Days or Oscar Romeros in America since about 1980, we would have stopped many wars whether started by President Ronald Bush, George W. Cheney, or Obama Clinton.
@miguelkath Hi Miguel - Servant of God Catherine Dougherty founded Madonna House in Combmere, Ontario Canada. with her husband Eddie about 50 yrs. ago. Before that, she established Friendship Houses in Harlem, other U.S. cities and Canada and lived with the poor as well. Her apostolate lived a life of giving is what I think she said, and the web site is definetly worth checking out. Regards-Maureen
Let's accept Dorothy Day's own assessment and not call her a saint. She confused many with her support of Communist dictators, including Fidel Castro. Indeed, she writes that a friend asked her if there was anything bad she could say about him. She did not abandon the Marxist beliefs of her youth--condemnation of the bourgeoisie, belief in class war, and hope in a coming revolution in the US. Documented information is available in Carol Byrne's book, "The Catholic Worker Movement (1933-1980): A Critical Analysis" and the blog "Dorothy Day Another Way."
+Ma Bee I disagree: if you are in the same generation or the next, then ideas hold. But past that, Sainthood brings people to read all your work, think quietly about what is important. If she were a saint, I would have picked her as my Patron as a new convert.
+Jonnee Kohler Please read more of Day's work. Young people are probably unaware of Day's friendship and high praise in her newspaper "Catholic Worker" for such prominent Communists as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and Mike Gold. Day repeatedly recommended Gold's novel "Jews Without Money" to her readers, even though it ends with the "hero" declaring, "O workers' Revolution, you brought hope to me, a lonely suicidal boy. You are the true Messiah." During World War II, Day declared that she did not believe the US way of life was worth saving. Day took a stern view of the failings of her fellow Christians (but did not act to end the sexual immorality under her own roof at the Catholic Worker farm in Tivoli, NY--as her published diary reveals). In contrast, she defended the high ideals of notorious Communists, of whom she wrote the following: "Marx... Lenin... Mao Tse-Tung... These men were animated by the love of brother and this we must believe though their ends meant the seizure of power, and the building of mighty armies, the compulsion of concentration camps, the forced labor and torture and killing of tens of thousands, even millions" ("The Incompatibility of Love and Violence," "Catholic Worker," May 1951).
+Ma Bee So what's this? Red baiting? I suppose I could troll the Mother Teresa videos, who is way more popular that Day, with material that Christopher Hitchens wrote. I suppose that you are a Catholic and that you would fine Mother Teresa's message more palatable. Never mind that Mother Teresa didn't have resources to provide for basic hygiene.
you are red baiting but you are right more an anarchist than a communist but she maintained friendships with mike gold anna louise strong elizabeth gurney flynn hard cheese on you red baiter kiss my catholic commie ass!
@OgeronimonominoregO C'mon! After eight years of Catholic school, I've seen the coercion firsthand. The violence is in the middle east right now. What delusion?

She exemplifies what it means to be a seeker...to search and to find. That is, in essence, what a saintly person is.

Thanks for making this whoever made it!!
We must highlight her prayer life. She was a convert, her theology developed over time. She had a deep love for the poor.
I will have to check this out. If Flobots recommend it, it's worth checking out in MY books.
