A great movie that went unnoticed by the American public and thankfully acknowleged by her peers. A time piece that travels through many wars with a poignant message. The soundtrack also travels through those times with great success. One of my favorite soundtracks.

I loved it too, but at this point, Bette Midler was not the box office draw she was during her amazing run between _Down and Out in Beverly Hills_ all the way to _Beaches_ . A lot of people forget that she was, at one point, one of Hollywood's top female box office attractions.

All the actresses nominated were in movies that, in my opinion, have been greatly underrated and almost forgotten. _Switch, For The Boys, The Addams Family, Fried Green Tomatoes_ , and the criminally underappreciated _Frankie & Johnny_ ...what a wonderful collection of films that not a whole lot of people remember. And yes, I know that both _Fried Green Tomatoes_ and _The Addams Family_ were box office hits, but do people ever talk about them anymore? So sad.

I remember Bette being so upset by the box office failure of this movie that she actually lashed out at her fans accusing them of not going out to see it in the theaters. I saw it and to be honest, I felt James Caan ruined it. I did not feel that they had any on screen chemistry at all. Just like them pairing her with the unappealing Dennis Farina in That Old Feeling. There was no magic there either.

The Academy Award or “Oscar” is a totally different award (that sometimes goes to the same recipients in the motion picture categories as the Golden Globe) but is given by the motion picture academy whose voting members are professionals in the film industry.

I had 8 long years of regret for not speaking the first time and it wasn't slipping through my fingers that time so I spoke to her. Ms. Midler was so gracious, so beautiful, and so glamorous. Truly the nicest celebrity (besides B.B. King) I have ever met and I've met quite a few now at age 45. Ms. Midler has always been my 2nd favorite actress after Bette Davis. If "For the Boys" was NOT produced by Midler's company I think it would have won an academy award. It was a very underrated film, but Midler and co. made a lot of mistakes--the schlocky old age makeup and their unwillingness to take a graphic stance against the war. It was a good film in spite of itself--I just wish it had more of a point and didn't rely on movie-of-the-week theatrics.

Bette is definitely not one of them! Narcissistic, I mean.

It’s 2024 and Bette Midler is still not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 😳

I remember how Bette Midler was on TV gnashing her teeth during this period because "For the Boys" was such a bomb. This award was a sympathy win because Midler tried so very hard and was so very bad.

I remember how Siskel & Ebert really trashed the film, especially its ending with the characters aging

She wasn't bad at all! But the movie didn't succeed for a few reasons. I loved it - her acting and the music especially, but it had some problems. The aging make up was horrible and I didn't like Caan. No chemistry at all. And they left out some scenes that would have helped I think. But Bette did a great job! I feel bad for her - I can only imagine the disappointment.
