Love learning this stuff, there should be more videos like this on mixing from FM. (I do agree with most that the audio should come from the master output though, especially with all the nuance involved in mixing) All in all great video!
Why do all these videos use the microphone audio rather than plugging directly into the mix... You'd think a magazine/youtube channel focused on music, production, and audio engineering would take this into account.
I assume It's to prevent people from ripping the TH-cam audio and sampling individual elements. During these track breakdowns, the artist plays stems or individual sounds, a lot of which would be p̶o̶s̶s̶i̶b̶l̶e̶ impossible to isolate with conventional sampling methods. So instead of FM uploading the dry audio and inadvertently providing everyone with the opportunity to ripoff the artists work, they upload less quality audio to discourage this.
Yeah but there was a remix competition for this song lol the stems for this are on the internet already so for a song like this they should just use the mix rather than only mic audio
He isn't the record label and probably doesn't have the ability to let the direct feed go out especially when he is soloing parts. The label obviously does.
I believe I saw Luca on Pensados Place, love his work and that set up is god like lol. Jelly. Side note, system audio would have been way better at hearing the A/B's not the video/room mics. None the less, grateful for the content, bless up!
+Theo Altmann Yeah ghost production doesn't mean that u're doing nothing, in the case of this song it is only the mixdown+mastering. The famous version of 'Light it up' is completely produced by another artist (it just says 'Remix'), but this person is not even named - This is also a kinda ghost producing. Anyway I don't really mind if they're using ghosts, the more important thing is that they're offering great music
Do you think diplo was gettimg this famous thrü ghost productions and Light it up is from Major Lazer they are focused on djing but i think they are producing also themselve but your know that Kight it up is just a remix
+Theo Altmann As I already mentioned Ghost production doesn't mean that u have completely no influence on the Song. But a few newer tracks of them are definitely created by the helping hand of others aus u can clearly c in this vid. They became famous with very good marketing and some talent. They became famous some Time ago, when there were not as much people wanting 2 become famous in this industry. So they also had a little bit time luck/chosen a nearly perfect time 2 get into this industry. Today it is much more complicated I guess.
Luca really knows what he is talking about. Love watching videos of this guy. Articulates everything really well. Hey Future, how about getting Andre Sobota on an 'In The Studio' Video. you know it makes sense.
He talks about sub frequencies, but... But I hear a huge trash from camera mic...It's seems to be so hard to bring a simple audio interface and to record a speech of interviewee separately from DAW signal...
this guy has the best tools and knows perfectly how to use it , you can't top that at home even if you're sonny moore, every edm guys wants their work to be check in his studio , you can really hear the amazing clean fat sound from diplo & dj snake - Lean On is coming from this step
I will bet you everything, that with his same level of knowledge, you can achieve almost or just as good movements, channel clarity, etc. DAW is the equalizer today and you can do the exact same thing.
Simply by looking at it. He's talking about sending his tracks through analog (which adds a lot of noise) and he's saying that he wants to keep it clean. So a for example: synth #2 not being playback during the verse fed through analog gear will be automated with volume all the way down. Then automated up as it comes in during the chorus. Then, automated back down. Why? All for the sake of the beauty of using he's analog collection but having the experience and knowledge to know that if the track is not being played back in various parts of the song, there's no need for unnecessary analog noise build up on a multi track basis. Hope that keeps.
When I originally listened to this song, I immediately knew whoever mixed this had to clean up shitloads and EQ the HELL out of the instruments due to them sounding super narrow/flat/boosted. So props, because the original mix wasn't simple.
If this man did this, what did Major Lazer do? Just choose the sounds? I mean, normally engineerers just do mastering. This one is even putting distortion and layering
major lazer is the brand and name hehehe, of cours melody and chords and ideas...but theres alot of people behind the scene i think...you can read all the names and informations if you google the song's name
so it means diplo is not a producer , just commercial jerk for project called major lazor and just knew people like skrillex whose do job for him and I guess even Skrillex uses this kind of engeneers for releasing his music thats why its sound so great,, The same was swedish house mafia,,, a lots of professionals stands bihend these tracks
A good mixing engineer will do anything to enhance a mix..actually is better if you send your track for mixing-mastering instead of just mastering ,because the engineer can get in the mix and fix what might not sound so well..This guy's work is to take a mix to the next level. He is not layering he is doing parallel compression..Also compression, distortion, reverbs, delays, vocal tuning, chorus, gates even sidechaining is a work for a mixing engineer. Some mixing engineers will also replace sounds or drums if they can do them better. So yes he is just doing mixing and mastering. Major Lazer and his team did the production and arrangement. Ps. mixing engineers like Petrolesi have the analog equipment to take your music to the next level..equipment so expensive that it will take you or Major forever to buy.so its not a bad idea to send your song for a good mix and master if you think it has the potential to become a hit And final words..big artists have not so much free time to spend on mixing details, because they travel a lot play gigs etc. They just cant do everything on their own because they do not have the time
A better soundrecording would have been nice, but in all honesty hearing his thoughts was great, understanding his philosophy is valuable. A song will never sound the same, so every change made is made by his taste, technique and workflow + understanding dancemusic. Thanks for this, he's a great mixer/masterer. So very cool ideas mixing and mastering at the same time. Read about him going from digital to analog then to another computer with the project set to higher khz 96. That is smart. People telling me they can't hear the difference in quality 44-96 khz makes you wonder what gear or how bad ears those people have. Hearing it is all realtive to hearing it in 44.1 first then listening to the same song in 96 if you cannot hear that work on your listening :)
This is a great video, but you have to fix the way you handle the audio, Future Music. Makes it truly difficult to hear the nuance in what Luca is doing to the mix.
its videos like these that make me think I'm just wasting my time trying for years reaching a top-level sounding final track... and just get a professional to do the mixing & mastering for me :/
dnbmuzik True. Mixing is much more personal but after you have mixed your own track, you are so attached and used to it that you might not hear what is wrong / what it needs as a final touch. Sending it to a pro M.E who has an acoustically amazing studio and amazing ears/experience with beautiful gear will make a world of a difference. A true professional master just lifts your track up to another level. Its a much more carefully crafted and subtle process than you may think. But obviously self mastering can be done. I self master my own stuff for sending around demos. But if one of my tracks were to be released digitally and on vinyl etc.. then i would invest in a pro master.
AstateOfficial Yeah I'm not really against using a mastering engineer, but mixing as you said is too personal, and is a skill I would rather have than getting a hit single with a tune that was mixed by someone else
zombirai don't get mislead by the musicindustry it's a mirage. Alot of recording/mixing/mastering/songwriter -geeks don't have time to travel the world. They sit at home evolving and climbing the ladder and become skilled until the day they work with some huge artist and suddenly everyone wants them to work on their album/song.
Love learning this stuff, there should be more videos like this on mixing from FM. (I do agree with most that the audio should come from the master output though, especially with all the nuance involved in mixing) All in all great video!

He isn't the record label and probably doesn't have the ability to let the direct feed go out especially when he is soloing parts. The label obviously does.
Too bad the sound quality sucks,...it would have been very cool to hear his master output and not a signal picked up from a room mic.
I’m a producer and just started my channel th-cam.com/video/OYfkBZBo25o/w-d-xo.html
Always a big inspiration.
Thank you Luca.
Always love watching Luca. This was priceless.
Luca the amazing generous legend! Thnx FM!
This series is awesome. Thanks for making it.
Holy S. what a kickass video. I'm watching this again a few times... so many cool techniques
Anyway..what it counts is his job and that's AWESOME. LUV Luca's work.
Thanks for this vid..👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Luca you know your stuff. Thanks for sharing.
mvh
This guy is great, very informative. Nice info on the BAX and Maselec.
I've rewatched this 20 times and learn something new everytime
Hi Future Music, it was really cool if you upload his video again with only his DAW, you cant see what he is doing.
dude knows his stuff
One of my favorites mixing tutorials. Luca is outstanding.
Man I absolutely loved this gem of a video. So many great tips. Cheers FMM
I believe I saw Luca on Pensados Place, love his work and that set up is god like lol. Jelly. Side note, system audio would have been way better at hearing the A/B's not the video/room mics. None the less, grateful for the content, bless up!
+JrumBeats It felt like the audio came from both the mics and system audio creating this slight delay effect.
Its a trombone boss. You are the best at mixing EDM for real.
Thank you Luca!
+juniorpittTV How did you see this one month ago?
+flammensehen yeah thats kinda weird
Great job Future Music! The lighting is very good ...the video quality looks professional !!.. Only wish you had direct fee for the Audio !
thanx! i don't get about vocals. are they already distorted? it sounds like iphone recording ))
+andivax андрей, а почему он так мало низа оставил в дропе?

в принципе и ник попсовый) старайся дальше
Such a well put together video, great video
Thank you so much Luca !!
heyy Future Music Magazine what is about getting Diplo or Major Lazer himself in the studio??
They arme not producing their stuff most of the time, they are focusing on DJing & having fun ;P
But diplo is often producing
+Theo Altmann Yeah ghost production doesn't mean that u're doing nothing, in the case of this song it is only the mixdown+mastering. Hey - very nice set-up Luca...and good demo of process. Thanks : -)
Luca explains it so well..
Good Stuff All Round... Cheers Luca
very generous luca thank you
Digital Boy is back :-)
he hav a soundgoodizer at right of his mouse lol
It's a knob made by Avid Euphonix to switch stuffs in your daw
I only was joking LOL
He has a hardware EQ hybrid on the right side called Bettermaker EQ but no it's not called "soundgoodizer"
It was a joke in reference to the simplistic, one knob maximizer on FL Studio called 'Soundgoodizer'
I got it straight away, some people don't have a high or low pass they have a joke pass
@9:41 Is there another way to get body like that from your claps? I was trying this last night but it always sounded to digital.
You should try Decapitator, Slate Digital's Virtual Tape Machines, Kramer Tape by Waves, or PSP Vintage Warmer!
Learned a lot great video!
Luca è un genio diventerà uno dei migliori di sempre
He talks about sub frequencies, but... But I hear a huge trash from camera mic...It's seems to be so hard to bring a simple audio interface and to record a speech of interviewee separately from DAW signal...
Big Rezzpect Luca 4 so many Hardcore & Tekkno Productionzz :)
1 000 000 thanks for this content

Nice insight!! Love that hybrid setup
Damn, dude works in a space ship!
what plugin at 12.18 for checking frequency?
Super dope!
Grazie per le dritte man , respect !
SKILLS LUCA! vai così!
By far the best logic pro mixing video ive seen on youtube. Most of the others are just crap.
Can someone tell me what compressor this is? 4:05
+Callum stock Logic Compressor
+Кирилл Петельковский Thx
I get it. love it. Thanks
I like this video)
+Alex Ortega (Morphing Shadows) me too )
+Alex Ortega (Morphing Shadows) amazing
Your claps are phasing....or may be its just the camera microphone ! How many busses do you take from Logic into the SSL Sigma ?
+MB TV 32 ch. 16 stereo. yes its the room mic phasing little bit
that long bass was a sine wave bass that he tried to use as a 808 but didn't come out right to make the low end real bassy
What is that plug in @ 12:25?
+Dan Delux I'm not sure, but it looks like something from MeldaProduction.
@ 18:48 for why he does all that volume automation lol. I'll probably never have the luxury of that problem. heheh..... :[
How do you know if it's only volume animation?
Simply by looking at it. He's talking about sending his tracks through analog (which adds a lot of noise) and he's saying that he wants to keep it clean. Bravo Luca! Ciao....
Well that was for sure some professor shit, unlike ingrosso said. Huge thanks for the video, so much complex stuff, but was easily comprehensive.
Thanks!
🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man!
Awesome Guy!
those faders are scaring me!!!!!!
drool worthy set-up.
This. Was. AWESOME. _0_

Great video. Took a lot from this.
ok I came back!
MMultianalyzer ! Grande !
This is a great video, but you have to fix the way you handle the audio, Future Music. Makes it truly difficult to hear the nuance in what Luca is doing to the mix.
LOGIC PRO YAS
so you tell me that major lazer don't mix their own tracks?
il mitico Digital Boy!
London is my city
Logic is my DAW
..
You already know...
get luca lush up in here
They got big background noise
its videos like these that make me think I'm just wasting my time trying for years reaching a top-level sounding final track... and just get a professional to do the mixing & mastering for me :/
Proves that even the big dudes have problems
i know u did not make that intro
Logic!!
I'll never release a track I made unless it was mixed and mastered by me
+dnbmuzik If you can afford it then send your tracks to get mastered professionally. Thats one stage which is so much better to get done by a pro.
+AstateOfficial I dont really agree. Mixing is way more difficult
dnbmuzik True. Mixing is much more personal but after you have mixed your own track, you are so attached and used to it that you might not hear what is wrong / what it needs as a final touch. +dnbmuzik true bro
Refreshing to a see a professional studio not use pro tools.
fuese chido si estubiese en español T.T
Sorry luca but this mix still sounds harsh! May be it’s intended but thats a bad intention!
Vocal: "Dance like a chicken" lol
seems very interesting, but Im out, couldn't stand the shity major lazer music.
wanna hear a joke.
room mic
I wonder how big is his salary when he have to deal with such wrong music
all this work still sounds like shit
Holy shit, diplo doesn't mix his own stuff. What a joke
zombirai don't get mislead by the musicindustry it's a mirage. Alot of recording/mixing/mastering/songwriter -geeks don't have time to travel the world. They sit at home evolving and climbing the ladder and become skilled until the day they work with some huge artist and suddenly everyone wants them to work on their album/song.
Mixer and producer are different man. Why is that a joke?
