  • Today we're back in Scrap Mechanic with some simple bipedal walkers! I've never built a bipedal walker before using a four-bar mechanism so I decided to give it a try and experiment with some of the different four-bar systems we can use!

      I agree %100. my main logic and physics baised building games has always been Little big planet 2 and 3 and i've made some stuff with suprisingly complex logic but i've not delved into some stuff with walkers being one of said stuff much because i've not thought of any good leg movement mechanisms such as this so i've found this video very informative and i'm going to transfer this into one of my inventions sooner or later, i think it will be exiting. Also i recon this and other engineering(I think there's a better word but I can't think of it right now) vids should transfer over to other logic and physics based game platforms so i think their may be a fair amount of people interested more videos like this.

    Kan you should try to build that were the red bar is replaced with a piston and the pivot point for the red bar connected to two pistons (vertical and horizontal) so you can give it a variable gait.

    (Just for "preface", some heads up that English isn't my primary language. Feel free, and appreciated for it, to correct any mistakes.)
    I am not particularly educated in neither mathematics nor mechanics - I don't even have this program - but incurable curiosity in how all things work has made me look closer at a lot of things in life.
    This is one of the best "ad's" I've ever seen for why and how understanding mechanics and trigonometry can be both fun and interesting. While I suspect few are looking at this and immediatly find a direct use for it in real life, I think there are lots of details in all of this that IS part of every day life.
    It (obviously) touches on how complicated movement and balance is using legs. You can simplify the mechanism, but then you are compromising on one or more qualities. Even considering the limitations in what the programs allows you to build, I think you put on display some very real challenges to solve and what you loose in a compromise.
    You also show how the parallel bars created a very stiff arm. It reminded me of how arms on assembly-robots and how the wheeldriving pistons on locomotives work.
    Actually going into the math' of it all might be better to put in a separate video, both for those who don't want to dig into that at all, as well as for those who want to look this through multiple times BEFORE moving on to the deeper why:s and how:s.
    Cool and interesting video!
    I would like to see how to understand the math' behind it, putting the numbers next to the motion, and to see how changing the numbers affects the motion, just to get that connection between the math' and the motion it creates.

    • @Naomi_Boyd
      @Naomi_Boyd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sargeonfire8005 That's exactly what Edison said to Tesla. I think it might be possible. You just have to build some kind of treadle mechanism instead of a chain. The walker would also have to be "clipped in" (i.e. welded to the peddles) in order to avoid collision lag.

    On the example where you say the red bar is flat and not moving, at 11:00, I would have just said: "The pivot point on the blue and red bar, and yellow bar, are aligned at this moment, sharing the same virtual joint." Or something to that effect. The only reason the red bar moves is because the blue bar lacks the range of motion to perfectly pivot there. If it could, the red bar would simply drop below the yellow and blue bar, reversing the system from gravity.
    Or something to that effect. Neat demonstrations, however.

    I think the center of mass on the walker needs to be lower to account for the longer stride and the black bearing needs to be higher so the foot tilts more forward so the heel doesn't drag. A low cockpit that has the legs attached above it would produce a long stride with low center of gravity. Low friction blocks on the heel might be good too so the drage doesn't affect it.
