Hogwarts Legacy has finally been released on PS5, Xbox Series X & S and PC. After much controversy in the weeks leading up to launch regarding JK Rowling's attachment to the series, we've seen many people swayed by their emotions whhen talking about this game. Wired recently did a review and gave it a 1/10 scores, streamers were harassed by their audiences and told them not to play the game. On the other hand, this has caused others to feel even more inclined to support the game and Metacritic user scores are higher than those of critics. In this video, I give my final verdict as someone trying to stay as objective about the game as I possibly can. I dive into the story, gameplay, broom flying, combat, and much more. I completed it last night. It’s definitely a good game but not without flaws. Enemy variety, Generic open world activities, lacklustre side quests, performance issues, audio issues, voice acting, irritating gear capacity & bugs were my biggest gripes.
Despite these issues I had, you can tell when a game is made with love. For their first crack at the whip, they delivered the best HP game to date.
Yes u right. It’s the best Harry Potter game but a pretty basic rpg. For a rpg every aspect of the game is too weak. I delete the game after finish the story and won’t play it again.
I have a feeling that the Witcher 3, the Fallouts and Elden Ring really spoiled me when it comes to open world RPGs . Hogwart's often fell short compared to these legends but I still believe this is a very good game but it's kinda bloated especially if want to 100% it.
My main gripes are the limited dialogue options and that loot is almost always just marginally better (or not better at all) clothing that doesn't even matter that much.
Also some of the underground mini dungeons and caves are very very lackluster. Only those are decent that require loading screens. But it's a shame they couldn't make a seamlessly connected world just like in Elden Ring. Maybe in their sequel.
It's alright game
It's a shallow RPG but it's still a fun game. I'm not saying it's shallow as a negative, it's just very accessible gameplay most people can easily get into. The game is even better if you're a fan of the books and movies because there are so many familiar locations and references.
I hope they do a sequel, perhaps at another of the magical schools or in another time period.
I’m not a fan of the ancient magic, I want a sequel in the time of Tom riddle. I’d love for there to be secret parts where you can see Tom entering the chamber of secrets etc

It’s definitely a good game but it’s suffers from a bland story\side quests (except for a small few quests which are pretty good), cliche and outdated world activities, and the fact that the desperately wanted hog warts student experience many of us crave isn’t really given to us in this game. There are more problems but these are, to me, the most problematic.
I really appreciate you and other TH-camrs standing their ground to both enjoy and critique this game. Thankfully some of us still have integrity.

Great review Robin. I think it's a very solid 8/10 game. Hogwarts and Hogsmead are the best parts of the world by far, but the wider world is a pretty safe open world. Combat is super fun and some side quests are great, especially one with the unforgivable curses, but some are very by the numbers fetch quests. It's definitely enhanced a lot if you're a fan of HP. I think it's a damn good effort for Avalanche's first foray into a game of this scope, but lots of room for improvement.
Don't they realize they'd have to impede every product, movie, toy, etc that uses the Harry Potter IP to achieve their goals of stopping JK Rowlings
Not just the HP IP but everything entirely. Everytime you buy something from oil changes to t shirts you're a bad person so to pick something so minimal that was blown up for a narrative is insane.
Not necessarily taking sides here but this isn’t a very good argument, they can’t really try to stop ALL of the products WB makes, I think there were similar but much smaller efforts towards the founding beasts movies but they’re also pretty shit, the franchise just isnt that big anymore movie wise, so from their pov its pretty smart to try to campaign in a field where hp hasnt had much of a hold and is setting up to be really. I bought the game expecting nothing more than just being able to walk around Hogwartz in modern graphics, but I found the story, combat and puzzles surprisingly great, even just dressing up my character with the gear system was enjoyable thanks to good looking clothing designs.
Would you be able to go in a bit more detail about the puzzles? Are there a lot of puzzles through the game? I really like the idea of having to work out the mysteries behind some of the magic rather than the game handholding you. Do they have good variety?
@@SilentSzZ In a lot of games you only have like one puzzle template and they just repeat it over and over again like for example the three symbols in Skyrim, or like the ladder in The Last of Us. This game has... I've lost count, there's probably like 10 different puzzle templates, and they're totally different, there's word puzzles, there's matching shapes, there's math, there's geometry, there's portals, and there's platforming. Having the variety makes a huge difference, I've almost never enjoyed puzzles except in Portal, and in this game.

@@SilentSzZ you put the red block on the red pad and use the red spell to activate it. If you see a gate, walk through it and something happens. If you can't figure it out, use the spell that tells you what to do. Honest review from a non Harry Potter Hype Beast, Breath of the Wild has more unique/difficult puzzles, much more in depth RPG system, and actually has a story. (TLDR, puzzles are simple and just added to fill time. As is the story. Combat spells are not truly unique). NOTE: If you love HP and want to be in the world and feel like a kid reading the book, go for it. If you want a good RPG/story, this isn't it. If you want to feel like a strong mage, get Magika 2 or Dragon's Dogma
I’m not too far into it, but loving it so far. I can’t help but think this is a great foundation for a sequel. It’s great, if they could tighten up technical issues, improve a few animations, lip syncing etc, and then once they’ve done that, they can focus on expanding the spells, exploration, story and choices and really making those aspects really stand out.
The only two things I want is a better gear system with permanent "look" override .... and then to see them go heavy into the RPG element. Give me branching story trees, a true morality system, different endings, more house and morality specific quests, etc.

The game is very pretty and super fun to play , But compared to older games it doesnt feel super complex . The fighting is very easy and feels like a good made mobile game . Also i didnt get alot of ''Student'' feeling . First of all because they start us off as a fifth year . I get that they do that since they cant make a first year go out and cast the cursed spells . But they could atleast give us the "Magical'' feeling by making us take the whole trip and then just forward 5 Years in a cut scene . Also i would have expected to have taken more classes . And not just super easy 1 minute lessons and then do the most easy ever movement with my mouse to learn a spell ? and thats it i never ever go to class anymore . So yes the game is pretty and it is fun but not the ultimate game . Since its kinds boring at some point if you dont care about exploring and seeing how pretty the castel look . I dont get why alot of those ''people'' that are boycotting this game are doing so ? the game is made for sugar cubes . No challenges . If i look at other big franchise RPG games like the Witcher or Elder scroll games this game doesnt come close to it sadly

It’s definitely room for improvement to certain things like the audio on some characters just felt dull and not as alive as the rest of the game.
But still I think For a studio that never had any experience with open World games this is phenomenal.
Just think about what other open world games you would draw comparisons with and look at how long their studios has been in the open world genre.
I think they made "Just Cause" which is open world.

It's a good game, I'm already towards the end of my 2nd playthrough and will do 2 more after that! But its best quality is that while it might just be a "good" game, it's a GREAT foundation to build on. The DLC and sequel potential is through the roof, not to mention that a lot of super shallow "tick the box" type aspects can easily be greatly improved upon. Based on how successful the game is, I'm very hopeful that this decade will have some of the best RPGs take place in the Wizarding World created by JKR.
My biggest problem with the game is the killing. It doesn't fit the world.
The somewhat bland open world and side activities were a big let down. Same with the "extra assignments from professors". The story is fun, but total play time is much shorter than I hoped for €60.
Im seeing more and more of these videos and I’m glad I’m not in the minority. It’s a good game but so many things could’ve been fleshed out. One thing that dissapointed me were things included in older games that either aren’t here or aren’t fleshed out. Small things like wizards chess, gobstones but also a big thing like potions.
In an earlier HP game (can’t remember which) you actually had to make the potion. So stir it till it’s the right colour, look for certain things etc. Here it’s just a button press. Same with the actual spells, could’ve been fun to have some sort of stick movement as opposed to just buttons.
I really enjoyed the game for at least 30 hours but I explored so much and right now I’ve got really high completion, tons of gear and I’m actually a lil bored with it.
I really loved the game, I think for me personally just wish there were more social sim aspects to the game. We are a student in the school yet we never really have to actually go to classes, hang out with friends etc.
Things that can be improved with a sequel
Yeah Bully is the only game that really nailed that formula. Was hoping for something like that with this game but all the classes are just quest-related
that’s a tough aspect to design as it may feel like a chore to attend the classes every in game day or so. I feel like- when playing- there is no time to attend the classes with all the other things to do outside of hogwarts but also lacks in the amount of class time you have access too if that makes sense

Pretty much that. I don’t want to get too political however JK Rowling is a very LEFT woman. Which is hilarious because she shares a lot of the mob’s views on the majority of things.
She just believes in the distinction between a biological male who is a trans woman and a biological female. And the mob cannot handle that.

Pros: Gorgeous graphics.
I enjoyed the combat dynamics.
I liked the customization for the main character.
In general, I really liked the main story quest. And the companion quests with Sebastian, Natty, and Poppy. Wish there was a second male npc here. Maybe one that was the opposite of Sebastian.
I feel like they left it open to have multiple sequels. I’m really eager to learn more about the story and to close off some loose ends. My imagination on the story has been set a light and that hasn’t happened since I read the original HP books. So great job on that part.
I loved the flying but do have some gripes on the controls.
Some of the NPCs were really good (Fig, Sebastian, Natty, Poppy, Prof Weasley, headmaster black) but most were flat, obnoxious, or uninteresting.
Definitely wish that there was a more dynamic system where our decisions had a greater affect on how the story played out. They really oversimplified that system in an effort to make players feel free to use the unforgivable curses. A lot of what I’ve seen, even among people who are enjoying using curses in combat are feeling the lack a satisfaction in going dark because of the lack of consequences. I really do hope they’ll find a way to fix that in any sequels.
Cons:
I really hate the inventory system and having to do merlin trials to up that.
The room of requirement is kinda cool, but is also a giant time suck to customize. Though I imagine some people enjoy that sort of thing.
Really do wish our decisions could have greater influence on the way the story plays out. That might have helped avoid the quests from feeling so shallow.
Wish there was some kind of school house point system. There could have used some of the mini side-quests to influence that.
Some of the game play gets a tad repetitive, like alohamora mini game.
Overall, I absolutely adore this game. Not being a big gamer or RPG player, I found it super easy to get sucked into. I truly feel there is so much potential here for sone really great stuff. I only fear they won’t be able to deliver what we want in a reasonable timeline.
I have never read or watched Harry Potter but thought this game looks like my type of game and I'm glad I played it I miss it whenever I'm not playing it

I still play RPG's from over 10 years ago because the story and relationships feel deep and satisfying. Everything is beautiful and I love flying around and figuring out puzzles, but this is no Dragon Age, Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls.

It's okay, I love Harry Potter but I got bored really quickly. It feels a bit like playing an offline MMO to be honest. The standout part is Hogwarts of course and while it's definitely beautiful and well designed it's kind of underutilised. There's not a lot to actually do there or interact with. The "puzzles" are dead simple and the collectables are super uncreative given the source material (floating pages, seriously?). The rest of the world (besides Hogsmead) is just a bunch of similar looking hills and forests with little to no character that I had no desire to explore. I wonder if they should have simply scrapped the surrounding area and instead focused their time and resources on making Hogwarts as alive, interactive and filled with content as they could.
Made by first year devs. Every npc is clippable, and the lightening is messed up. Like rooms will look weird when lookin in from outside the door of the room. Stop saying this is like Bully, my all time fave

Stealth would be so much better if you could interact with objects from afar to distract enemies, like trim the hedges randomly or knock stuff over.

so im a massive harry potter guy, i really like the series, i think its well written and as a result a game where i can go through hogwarts and surrounding areas is AUTOMATICALLY in my top 10, however i do not think that on a purely objective level the game is anywhere near that good, i simply like that it allows me some perspective on what ive read and gives me more perspective for future reading, im also more naturally immursed in the game and am probably willing to overlook more than i should, so im biased, objectively id say the game is a 7 or 8 out of 10, the combos are cool, graphics are excellent, but not perfect

@@Radek494 yes. i don't know if that's how they're teached in school or whatever, but they pronounce every sound very clearly and cleanly, and most importantly - fluidly. Not necessarily in "british" or "american" (I wouldn't call those clean or clear in any way, I would call them native.), but it sounds extremely pleasant.

I finished in 30 hours, but it felt like 70 hours, it drags a bit, but I don't thing is a bad game.

20 hours and nearly finished?! Boy it took me that long just to get my broom. If you haven’t done any side content you are missing out. I enjoyed the side content more than the main story.
23 hours and 65% done. Many side quests and main story is finished. I think the game is fun. But i think the story lacks engagement with many key characters. Only character i felt a relationship to was sebastian
@@partlycorn I know I get sidetracked with exploration easily (I’ve found 95% of the field guide pages) but I just hit 60 hours and I haven’t finished the main story yet.
I agree with you though. I think the story and the characters are the weakest part of the game. This is probably why I haven’t finished the main story yet- just don’t feel the drive to find out what happens next.

I bought the game and a big reason was the talk behind it. Like I probably wouldn't of even known about it if it wasn't for all the hate talk behind it. Glad I did while it's not an amazing game I'm having a good time so far.
Here's my unbiased review.... It's a f'n banger!! All games have flaws but to say this is anything less than great or at least good is crazy imo.
Man can’t wait to get it! Long time Harry Potter fan and this game is a dream, I just have to wait for the PS4 release, I hope that it runs well, if not, this game is going to justify buying a PS5.
I just bought Harry Potter and the philosofer stone for the game boy color in England, so that is going to keep occupied in the meantime.

I feel like this game is Fable but harry potter .
"Unbiased". Duude. Everyone trying to not offend anyone these days. This is average game with poor RPG mechanics, literally several types of enemies. Your choices does not matter at all -- linear plot. The main plot is boring. Sebastian story is only somehow interesting and Poppy's. Everybody crying in the end about mr. Fig, when in fact he didn't participate much, players do not get attached and don't give a fuck. They didn't even reveal who the main protagonist and what's hist story.
However, the world (the castle and some surroundings) itself are very precise. I truly liked it, there is a great job was done by mapping and designing depts.
In the end I didn't felt anything. After ending a great game it leaves you in some kind of sadness that it ended. Like, I do not know, RDR2 for example or Mass Effect (1-3). This just gave nothing. I'm HP big fan (books/movies) also a gamer. Invested 58h.

I loved the game at the begining but later i had to force myself to finish it. Gameplay got really repetetive, story and characters are boring as fuck and it didnt at all feel like you are a student in hogwarts. Its like you are just a random hero going on killing sprees and thats it
All they had to do was make it co-op it didn't even have to be a mmo tired of paying full price for a game that ima complete and never play again

Seems like a pretty mediocre experience if you’re not already infatuated with Harry Potter. There’s too many good games to play that actually stood the test of time. We will see if this one remains worthwhile to play down the line.

Im still buying it. This is an experience ive wanted since i was 8yrs old in the late 90s. Im not letting a bunch of twitter clowns and snowflakes ruin this for me. The only people these boycotters hurt are the hardworking developers who put their heart and soul into this amazing experience for us. They are all pathetic.

Ive also got trans friends who are still buying this game regardless of the boycotting. So yeah they need to back off and crawl into whatever pit they came out from. Being trans is a choice. 20 hours :O not many side quests then right? I finished it after 50 :D but still have a ton of side quests left. Some side quests are really good as well. Not a hp-fan but this game made me enjoy the HP world.

People need to be aware of the concept of separating the art from the artist. Girlfriends Reviews just got harrassed through their stream ONLY because they played Hogwarts Legacy and as far as I can tell, these JK Rowling haters are no better than JK Rowling herself. I am not even a Harry Potter fan, I am not even trying to defend JK Rowling's poor choices of words. Having the game flop doesn't make JK Rowling any less rich anyways so what are you trying to accomplish exactly? Not to mention, there are a lot of Star Wars fans who hate George Lucas. They love the films (Mostly the original trilogy), they just don't like the guy.
I don't think the comparison to George Lucas makes much sense. Star Wars' fans dislike George Lucas because of his artistic choices. HP fans dislike JK because they believe she defends an ideology that hurts human rights (in their opinion). I don't think it's the same thing at all.

Separating the art from the artist is kinda of a BS statement, if a singer came out as a pedo that raped 20 kids as young as 2 YO, I would bet that everyone here wouldn't support his product because of that.
The real thing is that everyone has different priorities and different limits, some people care alot about animals, others about LGBT+ people, others about abuse, others women, others about the environment, others about child exploitation, etc. and we "boycott" based on which of these things we care about the most. So many people want every single game to be as difficult as Dark Souls, so they completely turn their nose up at a game with a more leisurely pace. Too bad, because they're missing out of some wonderful games because of that.

@@Hollobaby1231 the first almost 10 hours, aside going to hogsmead, I didn't even leave the castle. Even at now 21 hours I've only been to just a small percentage of the map. And WITH this many hours there's still parts of the castle I'm finding I've never been to 😂😂 amazing game; light on the rpg elements but I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

The thing is, that group of people screaming and shouting to others to not play have become this vocal monster that is imposing themselves and their ideals on the entertainment industry.
While I dont think people are buying 2 or 3 copies, the "other side" is finally pushing back.

I feel like all of the reviews for this piece of crap were frauds. SO MUCH RUNNING! And endless cutscenes with some wizard fighting. I feel betrayed by all of the positive reviews. Someone owes me $60. Should have known the reviewers were a bunch of Harry Potter fan boys.
