And my son (9) thinks "cleaning" his room is a lot of work! I tell him all the time, you should see how hard it is to farm your own land! Now, that's work! (I don't know from experience, I am a city-slicker). I tip my hat to all of you. Great job, great experience, great respect, and appreciation.

Hey Justin we Kill 50-60 chickens a week and we do turkeys also. When we do the turkeys we have to cut the legs off because they won’t spin easily in the plucker. If you wanna try one time the next time you butcher, we don’t cut the legs off the chickens just the turkeys

What kind of loss do you get on a turkey from butchering?
Does it run around a 3rd of live weight?

I discovered your channel this past December. Fast forward to now and I am raising 5 ducks, 18 chickens, 4 guineas, and 2 turkeys here on the Navajo Nation. I love it I love it I love it. Instead of taking off to the city on weekends, I spend it working on the garden and tending to the birds. I tell ya thanks to you, your family, and your way of life...I am happier than ever. Thank you for being you and thank you for getting a homestead going way out here in the high desert. Cheers!

When I was growing up we used to pray before we ate. Seeing this process makes me think about that and the thanks that should be given for the food we eat. Including a little prayer for the life of the bird that feeds us. And seeing all the work you put into growing your food and the harvest of veggies and milk cows it just really makes me appreciate the food on my table. I do not support factory farming and hope that someday more of our country is fed by small farms like yours. Respect and gratitude for the food on our table and the hard work farmers like you do.

My late grandmother and her siblings were born near and before the turn of the 20th century. When they were teens and sub teen ages they would process meats for eating, take the horses and wagon to town for supplies, ride the Plains where they homestead all without an adult or parent. I miss grandmother Malone telling us stories. Happy your children have this amazing experience.

I hesitated to comment on your video. I am glad you process your own food and I am not criticizing, just trying to help. It looked like you only had one chicken in your plucker we put at least four at a time in ours (may only get three of the big chickens 6+lbs). We also catch the chickens close to dark and provide water, but no feed to clean out their crops. Makes it easier to eviscerate and reduces crops tearing. Really glad to see how involved your kids are in the process. The skills you are teaching them are invaluable.

When you butcher as a group, is it traditional to share birds with those who come to help? Does this figure into how many birds you decide to raise?

I wonder how many times In one day he said PAPA? He surely is just now fitting in the big scheme of farm life. Such a wonderful life lesson for all the children...they all work so very hard and I know you are very proud of them. Work ethic is vital for you to teach your children . Thank you Justin and family for sharing all your experience and knowledge. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I can conquer the world, well maybe not the world but at least my developing homestead. My family and I watch your butchering videos every time we do our own butcher days. You truly inspire us. With that said I would like to share a piece of knowledge with you.
Seeing you store your raw chicken above your raw milk concerns me. When storing things on shelves the food safely rule is
    RTE (ready time eat)
    Swim
    Walk
    Fly
Reason being that if RTE foods drip on raw fish there will be no concern of food born illness because the fish gets cooked to 145 Fahrenheit minimum. If fish drips on beef, beef is cooked to higher minimum temp than fish. If beef drips on chicken, chicken is cooked to a higher temp than beef (165).
My concern is that if any of your shrink wrapped poultry bags fail, raw poultry dripping may contaminate your raw milk which will not be cooked before you and your children drink it. This would expose you all to ecoli and salmonella. I would hate to see anyone get sick. I hope I explained this clearly. I can’t wait for the next video.
