Interesting video.....noticed our dryer was taking multiple cycles to dry and frequently would stop and display an error code. Research suggested an air flow obstruction. Less than a year ago we had a tech out to clean the dryer and tube/vent and I myself have cleaned the filter (remove a few parts and really vacuum where the filter goes). Called a local service and they would fit us in within 48hrs at a cost of $70. No issue but then I thought I can get the vent cleaning kit for $24 at our local Hardware, why not try it myself. So, pulled the dryer out, then removed the exterior cap (where the vent leaves our house) and the first thing I did was use our ECO leaf blower. On Turbo setting the leaf blower was actually being pushed out of the vent - wow big obstruction. So, outside and used the cleaning kit and after 30mins I had a massive and I mean massive amounts of harden lint. Looking at it I thought no way is this from less than a year, the previous tech (I wasn't home, wifey was) used a cleaning kit. He probably just used a blower like I did at first. Well, took me about an hour with cleaning and reassembly but now what a difference. It's on my calendar as a reminder to do it once a year.

We switched to solid pipe and an interior lint trap. Cost me 2 hours and 100 bucks. Never had an issue since (2+ years) and this is what was recommended

We’re in a slab, vent goes up a bit and out the side of the house, a pretty short run. Our vent does have a screen on it because the birds loooove the vents in our neighborhood. But we get up twice a year and clean it out. It’s easy as just a step ladder gets us high enough.

Our dryer is vented straight out the wall to the outside. Very good short run.

Mine has a 7ft run to outside, and vents from the basement. I actually borrowed your idea and used an electric leaf blower on it, and the mess that came out was insane! Unfortunately my dryer died and tripped the breaker and wouldn’t reset until I unplugged it. So I’m looking for a new one, but it will definitely run better when I get one. I’m in Cedar Rapids, IA, home of Crunch Berries and Pearl Farms syrup.

    Nice job, Steve!
Screens over a dryer vent are prohibited by building code,(International Mechanical Code, section 504.4) screens shall not be installed over the duct termination. I remove them and install a proper, code-compliant termination damper. If the customer insists on the screen, I advise them that I cannot legally install it.
A weekend review would be good.

If you have to install a mesh or cage over the second floor dryer, use an oversized cage so that the weather can naturally wash the lint off.

How's my girlfriend and I are having built also has the washer and dryer on the ground floor with the pipe going through the exterior wall directly. So that hot air is traveling a little over a foot through a wall possibly less I can't recall the specifics cuz it has to pass through The gypsum the framing which I believe is 2x6 for the exterior walls, and then the sheathing And then the bricks.

luckily i can reach my vent from just the ground without any ladder ...definitely if you have a screen it requires more maintenance but the alternative of aniomals gettin in your vent can be a huge problem...bigger then lint removal...not only birds can get in ...but mice and squirrels can get in especially if the vent s close to the ground ...and then you got even bigger poblems as they can chew thru the vent tubing in the walls of your home ...mice are notoiorus for this...if the vent is high up mice and squirrels are genrally not a problem with dryer vents..but .i live in canada where its very cold in november as winter approaches ,,, all sorts of critters can get into your vent when it gets cold...I have no regrets about screens...its not an option here...i would rather deal with lint then animals gaining access to the home thru the dryer vent...and we are NOT talking aboout bird nests which is a minor inconvenience...

Maryland. 1st floor dryer. 14ft to side exit for vent. I have it cleaned but the charges are crazy. $99 for first 5ft then $10 dollars a ft after that. I bought an Aldi brand electic blower doing it myself. My husband is perplexed that i know how to do this process. Shhhhhh. 😂

Idaho, mine is the shortest dryer vent we’ve ever had. Dryer is in the laundry room by the back door. We’ve got the flat vent behind the dryer (no hose). Then it goes directly out the wall maybe a foot and it’s outside.

From Houston, Texas here. We just had our dryer vent cleaned and got a LOT out; not because it wasn't drying, just because we'd never had it cleaned, and we'd lived here almost 17 years. The exhaust goes up and over a bedroom/bathroom, then back down to come out the exterior wall about 3-4 feet from the ground.

Mine goes down below the space between my basement storage and the floor. It's pretty easy to detach and clean the segments. About a 15 foot run with one 90 degree turn. Easy peasy. Last house was even easier. It was never designed for a dryer (1957), just a washer in the basement. Flexi hose vent went out the window above the dryer

Asheville NC ,I live in a condo, laundry room on main floor, dryer vents up through the celing through the attic, out through the roof. I've lived here 5 years and had it professionally cleaned once, then had to have an element changed in my dryer since then, plus my brother had been on the roof and cleaned it the best he could. He took off the cage looking thing this last time, we shall see how king this last. I'm so frustrated because I do not know what to do the next time it quits drying good, and it is bound to happen due to the poorly way the dryer is vented. Or worse, i fear a fire.

my house was built 2 years ago. The laundry room is on the 1st floor. The dryer vent is 14 feet from the ground. I'm really not sure why they made it that high, but it's the same for every new house in my subdivision. Makes it a pain to get a ladder to clean it out.
I wonder if I can just cut a new opening directly behind the dryer, so it's only about 2 feet from the ground... makes it so much easier to clean. Or is that some kind of code violation? That was how the dryer vent was constructed at my previous house(1970s house). The dryer vent was directly behind the dryer and just 1.5 feet from the ground. I used to clean it every coupld of months because it was so easy. :)

Cedar Rapids, IA. Cleaned our vent earlier this year. I don't know if any of the previous owners (20-year old house) cleaned it out or not. I tried the leaf blower method and only managed to blow apart a connection point in the duct work.
My dryer is on the main floor, the duct goes 90 degrees down to the basement ceiling, another 90 degrees to the wall, another 90 degrees up and one more 90 degree angle out of the house. I ended up taking sections apart and vacuuming a lot of built up lint out of the ducts. Flows great now. The vent out has 3 flaps to keep critters out.
Wouldn't the flap on this system keep the birds out, or are they able to pry it open?

Maybe the homeowner put that screen on the dryer vent because of birds. The only way they can get in if the flap gets stuck and doesn’t go down. Some birds create a nest inside those vents. So check yours out.
